Creating A National Coalition To Address Tractor Overturn Fatalities., Pamela J. Tinc, Paul D. Ayers, John J. May, Mark A. Purschwitz, Julie A. Sorensen

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Tractor overturns continue to be the leading cause of death on U.S. farms. While rollover protective structures (ROPS) are effective in preventing these fatalities, they are underutilized due to a number of barriers. Past programs in the U.S. and abroad have targeted this area of agricultural safety; however, a national program is not yet in place for U.S. farmers. This study seeks to build a national partnership to address tractor overturn fatalities by increasing the number of tractors with ROPS. A diverse, multisector steering committee has been organized and is working together using Whole System in a Room methods. This …

Defying The United States: General Douglas Macarthur, Luke G. Mueller

Honors Projects, History

General Douglas MacArthur continually disobeyed his superiors officers throughout his entire career, yet he never received any punishment. He eventually became one of the most decorated U.S. soldiers and rose to the rank of General by the time his career was over. However, as his career progressed, his defiance increased. It was not until President Harry S. Truman relieved him of command during the Korean War that MacArthur received any kind of reprimand. Because of this, MacArthur threatened not only U.S. security and democracy, but also world peace.

Mediatization In The Arab World: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of New Media Use, Julie B. Wiest, Nahed Eltantawy

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

New media (including online and cellular technologies) are being embraced around the world, and younger people have led the way in their adoption. These technologies have spread particularly quickly in the Middle East as a result of innovations in satellite, cellular, and Internet technology. In addition, the Arab Spring was a major milestone for new media adoption in the Middle East and helped define appropriate uses for these technologies. Although they have been used for activism and expression, evidence suggests that these are not (or perhaps are no longer) the primary uses of these technologies among young Arabs. Drawing on …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Emergency physicians have used point-of-care ultrasonography since the 1990 s. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians have more recently adopted this technology. Point-of-care ultrasonography is used for various scenarios, particularly the evaluation of soft tissue infections or blunt abdominal trauma and procedural guidance. To date, there are no published statements from national organizations specifically for pediatric emergency physicians describing the incorporation of point-of-care ultrasonography into their practice. This document outlines how pediatric emergency departments may establish a formal point-of-care ultrasonography program. This task includes appointing leaders with expertise in point-of-care ultrasonography, effectively training and credentialing physicians in the department, and providing ongoing …

U.S. Military Aid And The Role Of Foreign Armies In Civil Politics, Jennifer Jones Cunningham Apr 2015

U.S. Military Aid And The Role Of Foreign Armies In Civil Politics, Jennifer Jones Cunningham

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The recent expansion of the Egyptian military's role in civil politics has led to uncertainty regarding the relationship between U.S. military aid and democratization. However, studies focusing on the link between foreign aid and democratization often exclude military aid from their analyses. This omission is particularly problematic given that civilian control over the military is a vital precondition for democratic consolidation, and a high percentage of U.S. military aid recipients are not yet consolidated democracies. Proponents of military aid point to the role security cooperation can play in diffusing democratic norms of professionalism. Critics worry military aid strengthens an institution …

Armed Humanitarian Intervention: The Role Of Powerful Leaders In Framing And The National Security Decision Making Process, John Marshall Callahan Apr 2015

Armed Humanitarian Intervention: The Role Of Powerful Leaders In Framing And The National Security Decision Making Process, John Marshall Callahan

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This study identifies and analyzes the decision making and framing processes for selected cases of armed humanitarian intervention by the United States in the post-Cold War Era. It fills a gap in the literature on decision making, focusing on the role of the powerful individual leader in national security decision making and the framing of interventions to the U.S. public and other stakeholder audiences. An examination of extant literature on the subject of U.S. foreign policy decision making, and development and implementation of framing strategies is used to determine the role of the individual leader in those processes using three …

Keeping Up With The Joneses: A Model Systemic Risk Reporting Regime For The Canadian Hedge Fund Industry, Andrew Mcgarva Apr 2015

Keeping Up With The Joneses: A Model Systemic Risk Reporting Regime For The Canadian Hedge Fund Industry, Andrew Mcgarva

Dalhousie Law Journal

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a regulatory model by which Canadian securities regulators may monitor the systemic risk contributed to by the Canadian hedge fundindustry The bases for this modelare recent regulatory reform initiatives adopted in the U.S. and Europe. There, securities regulators have adopted Form PF and AIFMD, respectively, to monitor the systemic risk contributed to by hedge funds. However, the features of those regimes are not necessarily appropriate for the Canadian industry. The appropriateness ofthe features of Form PFandAIFMD for the Canadian hedge fund industry is evaluated on two criteria: the average industry fund size, …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Point-of-care ultrasonography is increasingly being used to facilitate accurate abstract and timely diagnoses and to guide procedures. It is important for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians caring for patients in the emergency department to receive adequate and continued point-of-care ultrasonography training for those indications used in their practice setting. Emergency departments should have credentialing and quality assurance programs. PEM fellowships should provide appropriate training to physician trainees. Hospitals should provide privileges to physicians who demonstrate competency in point-of-care ultrasonography. Ongoing research will provide the necessary measures to define the optimal training and competency assessment standards. Requirements for credentialing and hospital …

Reversing Stereotypes: The Good Black Man America Has Yet To Know, Alexandria Harris

Featured Research

Research has shown that the negative stereotypes of black masculinity prevalent in American public opinion are linked to negative media portrayals of African American men. Using both theming analysis and survey experiment methods, I ask whether or not positive media portrayals of African American men offset negative stereotypes of black masculinity. The central finding is that one-time exposure to positive media portrayals of African American men decrease levels of racial resentment. I then close by considering the implications the results have on media portrayals as well as opinions of ordinary citizens.

Acknowledging Individual Responsibility While Emphasizing Social Determinants In Narratives To Promote Obesity-Reducing Public Policy: A Randomized Experiment, Jeff Niederdeppe, Sungjong Roh, Michael A. Shapiro Feb 2015

Acknowledging Individual Responsibility While Emphasizing Social Determinants In Narratives To Promote Obesity-Reducing Public Policy: A Randomized Experiment, Jeff Niederdeppe, Sungjong Roh, Michael A. Shapiro

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study tests whether policy narratives designed to increase support for obesity-reducing public policies should explicitly acknowledge individual responsibility while emphasizing social, physical, and economic (social) determinants of obesity. We use a web-based, randomized experiment with a nationally representative sample of American adults (n = 718) to test hypotheses derived from theory and research on narrative persuasion. Respondents exposed to narratives that acknowledged individual responsibility while emphasizing obesity’s social determinants were less likely to engage in counterargument and felt more empathy for the story’s main character than those exposed to a message that did not acknowledge individual responsibility. Counterarguing and …

Legislating Autism Coverage: The Conservative Insurance Mandate, Lori Shealy Unumb Jan 2015

Legislating Autism Coverage: The Conservative Insurance Mandate, Lori Shealy Unumb

Belmont Law Review

Since 2007, numerous state legislatures have enacted insurance mandates relating to treatment for autism. In the absence of an autism insurance mandate, health insurers typically do not cover “one of the most commonly prescribed therapies” for autism, which is an intensive therapeutic intervention based on Applied Behavior Analysis (commonly called “ABA therapy”). The autism insurance mandates that have swept the nation during the last decade require coverage for ABA therapy and other care that is ordered by a physician and deemed medically necessary to treat autism. This article (1) examines why so many legislatures that traditionally resist insurance mandates embrace …

Macroeconomic Determinants Of The U.S. Profit Rate, 1949-2001, Tanya Moore Jan 2015

Macroeconomic Determinants Of The U.S. Profit Rate, 1949-2001, Tanya Moore

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to uncover determining factors of the behavior of the U.S. profit rate, which has exhibited a persistent downward trend for most of the 20th century. After neoclassical vs. Marxian theories of profit as well as a review of the profit rate literature are presented, a linear regression, utilizing an ARDL framework, tests for the potential impact of various macroeconomic variables. The final significant variables include the GDP growth rate, labor productivity, the interest rate, and the unemployment rate. The thesis concludes by considering the implications of these results for capitalist firms, with particular regard to labor productivity.

There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen Jan 2015

There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen

Theses & ETDs

After the rhetoric of Franklin D. Roosevelt rebranded U.S. foreign relations through the anti-imperial Good Neighbor policy, challenged the racial hierarchies of "Nazi tyranny," and established post-war aims of self-determination and human rights for "all the men in all the lands," the denial of African American human rights undermined the moral legitimacy of the United States to be a model for modernity in the post-colonial world. In order to "outsell Communism" in a decolonizing world, the Truman administration embraced racial liberalism and a "Second Reconstruction" to ameliorate the image of U.S. race relations. In response to Truman‘s racial liberalism, southern …

Where Modesty Meets Anxiety: A Cross-Cultural Study On Self-Effacing Behavior Among Americans And Filipinos, Marina Garcia Jan 2015

Where Modesty Meets Anxiety: A Cross-Cultural Study On Self-Effacing Behavior Among Americans And Filipinos, Marina Garcia

Theses & ETDs

Previous cultural research has shown that there lies a disparity in the way people of Western, individualistic cultures and the way those of Eastern, collectivistic cultures interpret socially anxious and self-effacing behaviors (e.g., being modesty or shy in a group, playing down achievements, attributing achievements to luck). The current study aims to investigate cross-cultural variations in self-reported social anxiety, as well as interpretations of self-effacing behaviors among nonclinical samples in the United States (an individualistic society) and the Philippines (a collectivistic society). Participants were recruited through the social media website of Facebook and completed an online survey via SurveyMonkey. The …

Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel Jan 2015

Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the origins of specific stereotypes and preconceived notions of India and people of Indian descent in the United States and how they are manifested today in American sitcoms. I analyze how some Indian and Indian American characters’ identities are more strongly informed by race, ethnicity, and nationality, which can play a role in perpetuating stereotypes. By looking at story arcs, character development, jokes, and dialogues, I show how varied or homogenous the characters are in the depictions of their identities and to what extent these identities are integral to the series’ comedy.

Walk With Us On The Path Of Progress: The United States And Russia, Perceptions, Attitudes And Policy, 1867–1933, Michael Twillman Jan 2015

Walk With Us On The Path Of Progress: The United States And Russia, Perceptions, Attitudes And Policy, 1867–1933, Michael Twillman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the development of American perceptions and attitudes of Russia and Russians from 1867–1933 and how they came to impact policy decisions. It explores the origins of an essentialist view of Russian national character and how these ideas were adopted and adapted by American Russia “experts”, observers and policy makers. In addition, it seeks to illustrate that American views of Russia, while continually changing over time in response to different circumstances, were taken from a common fund of ideas about Russian national character. Americans wanted Russia to become a more modern and democratic society and spoke positively about …

Although the number of opportunities to learn popular music in the United States continues to grow, popular music education (PME) programs remain exceptional at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of institutionalized music education. This article provides insight into the unique characteristics of a number of PME initiatives currently operating in the United States. A historical background is established to provide context regarding the history of PME in the United States. Additionally, a focus on an expanding landscape for American PME is included, as is an examination of six specific initiatives that are particularly noteworthy. This review of popular music programs, …

African Americans Speak To Spectacle Lynchings, Mary Beth Mathews Jan 2015

African Americans Speak To Spectacle Lynchings, Mary Beth Mathews

Cultural and Philosophical Inquiry Articles

Donald Mathews’s “The Southern Rite of Human Sacrifice” both describes southern lynching as a lived interpretation of Christianity and claims a role for the religious study of lynching. Relying largely on historiography, Mathews contends that white southerners created this religion and ignored obvious parallels between lynched black men and the death of Jesus on the cross. But missing from this and other interpretations is a key voice: that of contemporary black evangelical pastors.

An Unfinished Journey: The Evolution Of Crime Measurement In The United States, Daniel J. Patten Jan 2015

An Unfinished Journey: The Evolution Of Crime Measurement In The United States, Daniel J. Patten

The Hilltop Review

This article traces the history of crime measurement in the United States beginning with the U.S. census in 1790 while exploring several key pieces of history that influenced how crime is measured today. After discussing the origins of the U.S. census and its contributions to measuring crime, the Chicago School of Sociology is observed for its monumental influence on early criminology in America. Next, the division of sociology and criminal justice into two distinct fields had major implications for measuring crime. How crime is measured is often attributed to the ideological differences between these academic fields. Then, the three primary …
