Agricultural Subsidies And The Doha Round: A Historic Breakthrough?, Samuel T. Ledermann

Geography Honors Projects

The international community witnessed a self-proclaimed 'historical breakthrough'at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in late Summer 2004 as a framework was created to eliminate all export subsidies and reduce domestic subsidies and tariffs respectively. While many hailed this step as a major victory for developing nations, others have been cautious on the 'success'of this agreement. This honor thesis evaluates the short- and long-term effects of this framework agreement on the agricultural sectors of the US, South Africa and Mali. The paper first undertakes a historical analysis of what led to this 'victory'for developing nations at the WTO. The paper then …

The Evolution Of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Cuba, Nicholas Drew Gordon May 2005

The Evolution Of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Cuba, Nicholas Drew Gordon

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Cuba's location has determined the island's political, social, and economic history. No other political entity in the Western Hemisphere has been as contested as Cuba has, and no other society has passed from colonial status, to a republic, to a socialist state in less than 100 years. The largest and most western island of the Antilles archipelago, Cuba is centrally located between North and South America, and guards access to the Caribbean Sea. For hundreds of years, its strategic position and its rich soil, abundant harbors, and mineral reserves have attracted foreign powers-first Spain, then the United States, and then …

An Evaluation Of Current Legitimacy-Based Objections To Nafta's Chapter 11 Investment Dispute Resolution Process, Naveen Gurudevan

San Diego International Law Journal

The year 1994 saw the conclusion of a very important trilateral trade and investment treaty in North America: the North American Free Trade Agreement. Since then, this agreement has had a tremendous impact on the trading relations among the three signatory states-the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Of particular significance is Chapter 11, the Investment Chapter. One of the main objectives of Chapter 11 is to provide an effective means for the resolution of disputes between a foreign investor and the host government. To this end, it provides a mechanism whereby private parties can initiate arbitration proceedings against the host …

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos Apr 2005

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

Policy Documents

The picture painted in this brief is mixed. On the one hand, Latinos lag significantly behind the aggregate of the US population in positive housing indicators and are overrepresented in the categories of negative housing indicators, and they do so for 2003 as they did in 2001, 1999 and 1997. On the other hand, over this period there has been some progress in some areas of concern; but this progress has not been necessarily consistent. This policy paper includes recommendations to improve housing for latinos.

Cholera And Its Impact On Nineteenth-Centry Mormon Migration, Patricia Rushton Apr 2005

Cholera And Its Impact On Nineteenth-Centry Mormon Migration, Patricia Rushton

BYU Studies

Nineteenth-century migrants traveling across America suffered from many diseases as they journeyed to new homes in the West. The disease that was most common and caused the highest rate of illness and death was cholera. Historian Robert Carter notes, "It was a disease with which people were... familiar, yet it was little understood. It would strike suddenly, with no warning, often killing the victim within hours of the first symptoms. It was so uncontrollable that often entire families, even whole emigrating companies, would be wiped out." While cholera was not always fatal, it brought fear and suffering into the lives …

BYU Studies

Prints of paintings of Christ and other people from the scriptures and Church history are displayed in Latter-day Saint meetinghouses, visitors' centers, and temples throughout the world and are used in Church magazines and manuals. Many of these artworks were created in the 1950s and 1960s by American illustrators Arnold Friberg, Harry Anderson, Tom Lovell, and Ken Riley. While the religious works of these illustrators are familiar, less known are the career paths these artists took and the other works of art they created. This article aims to acquaint the reader with the lives of these illustrators and the circumstances …

Hiv/Aids And Condom Usage: Factors That Contribute To African American Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection, Monica P. Washington

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

HIV/AIDS poses an enormous health threat to African Americans, specifically African American women. In 2000, although African American women only represented 12% of the female population, they accounted for 64% of HIV cases reported among women (The White House 2000; National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2004).

This study examined HIV/AIDS and African American women and attempted to answer the question: Why are African American women not consistently using condoms to protect themselves against …

Developing And Deploying A New Member Of The Dental Team: A Pediatric Oral Health Therapist, David A. Nash Mar 2005

Developing And Deploying A New Member Of The Dental Team: A Pediatric Oral Health Therapist, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

There are inadequate numbers of dentists able and willing to treat America's children, specifically children from low income and minority populations. This has led to the well-publicized disparities in oral health among children. In the early part of the 20th century New Zealand faced a significant problem with oral disease among its children and introduced a School Dental Service, staffed by allied dental professionals with two years' training in caring for the teeth of children, "school dental nurses." A significant number of countries have adopted the model. This article reviews the history of attempts to develop such an approach …

The United States And Economic And Social Rights: Past, Present…And Future?, Daniel J. Whelan Feb 2005

The United States And Economic And Social Rights: Past, Present…And Future?, Daniel J. Whelan

Human Rights & Human Welfare

There is probably no other topic in the field of human rights that is more difficult to talk about clearly than economic and social rights. The language surrounding economic and social goods as rights claims is often muddled and confusing, lacks precision, and is difficult to grasp. What does it mean, for example, to have a right to the “highest attainable standard of mental and physical health,” for example? What is “highest”? What about “attainable standard”? What is included in “mental and physical health?” Should health care be free-of-charge? Should the state provide it? Would we have to go court …

Resistance To U.S. Economic Hegemony In Latin America: Hugo Chávez And Venezuela, Rachel M. Jacques

McNair Scholars Journal

Recent years have seen increasing opposition to U.S. political and economic influence in Latin America. Venezuela is a key player in the South American economy. This project researches the country’s history from the 1950s to the present and the role of the U.S. in its formation. Through political economy, this study asks if recent political changes are due to the effects of U.S. policies in Venezuela. The research examines the relationship between the two nations and the development models proposed by the Chávez government. The paper considers alternative models of economic development, independent from U.S. political hegemony.

Policy Analysis Of Invasive Species Regulations In Sydney Harbour And San Francisco Bay, Alexis Radovich, Christina Schmunk Jan 2005

Policy Analysis Of Invasive Species Regulations In Sydney Harbour And San Francisco Bay, Alexis Radovich, Christina Schmunk

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The demand for the mass transportation of goods throughout the world is threatening the biodiversity and native habitats of local scale aquatic assemblages. Efforts to preserve and protect marine communities are hampered by the danger of invasive species coming into native harbor community assemblages. In order to manage and conserve these ecosystems, it is necessary that we research and compiled the species in order to gain a better understanding of how legislation and regulations can be used in order to create systems that are sustainable for all species. The goal of this capstone is to examine current and past legislation …

Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood Jan 2005

Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood

State of the Animals 2005

Of all the species that have been domesticated, cats have historically been subjected to the widest diversity of treatment by humans. They have been worshipped as gods and reviled as devils, coddled and pampered, but also abandoned and abused. Our treatment of cats has likewise created a range of problems for professionals concerned with their care—from dealing with problems of obesity and overindulgence to tending to the needs of animals who have been neglected, intentionally harmed, or even tortured.

Indoor Cats, Scratching, And The Debate Over Declawing: When Normal Pet Behavior Becomes A Problem, Katherine C. (Kasey) Grier, Nancy Peterson

State of the Animals 2005

When pet animals share our living spaces, their needs and natural behaviors sometimes are at odds with the varying standards for household appearance, sanitation, and polite social life that Americans have established over time. How pet owners have resolved these issues provides insight into their changing ideas about the role of animals in their households and suggests how much, or how little, people may actually know about the biological behaviors and psychological needs of the creatures they care for. This essay examines one particular issue associated with the problem of sharing spaces: declawing pet cats as a common solution to …

Progress In Animal Legislation: Measurement And Assessment, Andrew N. Rowan, Beth Rosen Jan 2005

Progress In Animal Legislation: Measurement And Assessment, Andrew N. Rowan, Beth Rosen

State of the Animals 2005

As the animal movement has gained more political authority and public acceptance, it needs better ways to assess and follow its progress—or lack thereof—towards its goals. In this era, in which nonprofits and funding agencies are demanding better measures of effectiveness, the animal movement needs to examine how it looks at the progress it is (or is not) making in gaining better legal protection for animals.

Feral Cats: An Overview, Margaret R. Slater, Stephanie Shain Jan 2005

Feral Cats: An Overview, Margaret R. Slater, Stephanie Shain

State of the Animals 2005

Humans and cats have a long and complex history together. Since the nineteenth century, contradictory ideas about the need to protect and care for cats have moved us toward a shift in ideas, values, and behaviors to a more benign perception of cats than was generally the case in previous centuries. In some quarters, but not all, even feral cats have begun to be seen as worthy of our study and humane treatment. In many countries, the welfare of all cats has become a focus of public concern, but nowhere is the shift in values reflected more than in the …

"Woke Up This Morning With My Mind On Freedom": Women And The Struggle For Black Equality In Louisiana, Shannon L. Frystak

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role of female civil rights activists in the black struggle for equality in Louisiana. Drawing on the fields of history, sociology, political science, and gender studies, this project demonstrates that women were indispensable figures in the freedom struggle in Louisiana throughout the twentieth century, and highlights their roles as organizers, participants, and leaders.

The project focuses on the entire state of Louisiana, but more specifically in areas where civil rights organizations concentrated their efforts. While many historical studies of the movement begin with the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, this …
