Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)
Comments and Feedback
The staff of the center has recently spent a lot of time and effort in revising this manual. However, we realize that those who are actively reading and using the manual can improve it. As a part of our program of continuous quality improvement, we ask you to help guide our efforts to improve the manual.
In the next section of the chapter are two forms. The first form is an overview by chapter that seeks to identify those areas of the manual that could benefit the most from additional work. We also seek to identify any …

Competences Of The "Union" And Sex Equality: A Comparative Look At The European Union And The United States, Barbara Havelková
Competences Of The "Union" And Sex Equality: A Comparative Look At The European Union And The United States, Barbara Havelková
Michigan Law Review First Impressions
The delivery of substantive sex equality guarantees in the European Union and the United States is substantially affected by the division of powers ("competences" in European terminology) between the constituent units and the center. This Commentary compares the technical similarities and differences between the structures of competence of the federal systems of the United States and the European Union. This Commentary also briefly sketches their impact on substantive sex equality law.

A Wild Web: The Tangled History Of Attitudes Toward Wildlife In A Dynamic New England Culture, 1945--1985, Mary H. Hopkins
Doctoral Dissertations
Attitudes toward wildlife are considerably more complex than one might suspect. This dissertation started with a hypothesis that population growth would correlate with increasing negative attitudes toward wildlife, but historical evidence only partially supports this hypothesis. Information about the frequency and types of wildlife references appearing in newspapers between 1945 and 1985 was gathered from a systematic sampling of six New Hampshire newspapers that represented towns with differing growth trends. While analysis of quantitative data minimized any correlation between growth and negative attitudes, qualitative data from newspaper articles, archival sources, government reports, books and articles, and other sources provided evidence …
Growing Pains In The Administrative State: The Patent Office’S Troubled Quest For Managerial Control, Arti K. Rai
Growing Pains In The Administrative State: The Patent Office’S Troubled Quest For Managerial Control, Arti K. Rai

In the last ten years, the workload of the Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO") has increased dramatically. Complaints about the PTO's ability to manage its workload have increased in tandem. Interestingly, although Congress has explicitly given the PTO rulemaking authority over the processing of patent applications, and withheld from it authority over "substantive" patent law, the PTO has arguably enjoyed more success in influencing substantive law than in executing direct efforts to manage its workload. This Article explores the multiple, mutually reinforcing reasons for this anomaly. It argues that although there are good reasons to be frustrated with the PTO's …
A Suggested Model For Emergency Medical System Response During An Outbreak Of Human Pandemic Influenza, Ellen A. Black
A Suggested Model For Emergency Medical System Response During An Outbreak Of Human Pandemic Influenza, Ellen A. Black
Master's Theses
Predictions on infection rates for a possible outbreak of human pandemic influenza have officials in Public Health, Epidemiology, Public Safety, and other organizations developing plans on the federal, state, and local levels. These plans are outlining prevention, preparedness, and response during an outbreak, stressing interagency collaboration and contingencies for significant employee absenteeism rates for extended periods of time. However, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers will likely face a marked increase for calls for service to the community; and may be forced to provide service with a diminished workforce and additional duties not traditionally performed by their personnel. This Thesis examines …
Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl
Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl
Master's Theses
Today the potential exists for a terrorist organization to use a Radiological Dispersion Device or a dirty bomb within the United States. The results of such an attack could be catastrophic to the affected population. The response by law enforcement must be calculated and planned.
To properly analyze the law enforcement's role in a radioactive incident a qualitative approach was taken. A determination must be made prior to an attack to discern what kind of training will be necessary, what equipment will be required, and what response procedures need to be in place to ensure a safe and efficient response. …
Calpain Inhibition Attenuates Inflammatory And Neurodegenerative Events In Animal Models Of Multiple Sclerosis, Mary Kelly Guyton
Calpain Inhibition Attenuates Inflammatory And Neurodegenerative Events In Animal Models Of Multiple Sclerosis, Mary Kelly Guyton
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects approximately 400,000 people in the United States every year and results in fatigue, visual dysfunction, and paralysis. Inflammatory events associated with MS include activation of auto-reactive T cells and migration of these and other immune cells into the CNS, leading to production of cytokines and other mediators and to demyelination. Astrogliosis and microgliosis are also prominent inflammatory features of MS. Neurodegenerative events such as axonal damage and loss of neurons and oligodendrocytes also contribute to clinical disease symptoms. Cell death is thought to occur, …

BACKGROUND: Physicians in small to moderate primary care practices in the United States (U.S.) (<25>physicians) face unique challenges in implementing quality improvement (QI) initiatives, including limited resources, small staffs, and inadequate information technology systems 23,36. This qualitative study sought to identify and understand the characteristics and organizational cultures of physicians working in smaller practices who are actively engaged in measurement and quality improvement initiatives.
METHODS: We undertook a qualitative study, based on semi-structured, open-ended interviews conducted with practices (N = 39) that used performance data to drive quality improvement activities.
RESULTS: Physicians indicated that benefits to performing measurement and …

It is often alleged that PTAs involving the EC and the US include a significant number of obligations in areas not currently covered by the WTO Agreement, such as investment protection, competition policy, labour standards and environmental protection. The primary purpose of this study is to highlight the extent to which these claims are true. The study divides the contents of all PTAs involving the EC and the US currently notified to the WTO, into 14 'WTO' and 38 'WTO-X' areas, where WTO provisions come under the current mandate of the WTO, and WTO-X provisions deal with issues lying outside …

BACKGROUND: Early detection of colorectal cancer through timely follow-up of positive Fecal Occult Blood Tests (FOBTs) remains a challenge. In our previous work, we found 40% of positive FOBT results eligible for colonoscopy had no documented response by a treating clinician at two weeks despite procedures for electronic result notification. We determined if technical and/or workflow-related aspects of automated communication in the electronic health record could lead to the lack of response.
METHODS: Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, we evaluated positive FOBT communication in the electronic health record of a large, urban facility between May 2008 and March 2009. …
Preventing Cervical Cancer: Challenges To Implementing Hpv Vaccine Strategies Among Medically Underserved Populations, Sharon M. Bond
Preventing Cervical Cancer: Challenges To Implementing Hpv Vaccine Strategies Among Medically Underserved Populations, Sharon M. Bond
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cervical cancer is a major health problem and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. The purposes of this dissertation are threefold; to examine cervical cancer screening methods used in developing countries, evaluate prevailing attitudes toward new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and share results from a pretest of two instruments designed to measure knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about cervical cancer, human papillomavirus infection and the new vaccines among medically underserved populations. In manuscript I, direct visual inspection (DVI) is a method used to screen for cervical cancer in developing countries where population-based Papanicolaou (Pap) screening is unaffordable …

Job Satisfaction Comparison Between Foreign Educated Nurses And U.S. Educated Nurses, Kari Zizzo
Job Satisfaction Comparison Between Foreign Educated Nurses And U.S. Educated Nurses, Kari Zizzo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The current nursing shortage has impacted the profession and resulted in desperate recruitment of immigrant nurses to work in the U.S. Low job satisfaction is a factor implicated for the high nurse turnover rates, which contributes to further shortages and recruitment. Satisfaction amongst all nurses has been assessed in past research to address these issues; however no research per se has compared job satisfaction of nurses who obtained their nursing education in the U.S. to nurses who obtained education in other countries. It was the purpose of this study to compare these groups to identify any differences in job satisfaction. …
Eminent Domain: The Unintended Consequences Of Kelo, Tracy Lynn Bower
Eminent Domain: The Unintended Consequences Of Kelo, Tracy Lynn Bower
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In recent years, local governments in the United States have increasingly used eminent domain to promote economic development, raising concerns among property-right advocates over what those advocates view as unlawful, or what should be unlawful, takings of private property in order to benefit another private property owner. This philosophical and legal dispute reached a crisis point in the 2005 United States Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. City of New London. In that decision, the court narrowly upheld a Connecticut Supreme Court ruling granting the City of New London permission to redevelop land that had been seized from existing homeowners …
Bisexuals Need Not Apply: A Comparative Appraisal Of Refugee Law And Policy In Canada, The United States, And Australia, Sean Rehaag
Articles & Book Chapters
This paper offers an analysis of refugee claims on grounds of bisexuality. After discussing the grounds on which sexual minorities may qualify for refugee status under international refugee law, the paper empirically assesses the success rates of bisexual refugee claimants in three major host states: Canada, the United States, and Australia. It concludes that bisexuals are significantly less successful than other sexual minority groups in obtaining refugee status in those countries. Through an examination of selected published decisions involving bisexual refugee claimants, the author identifies two main areas for concern that may partly account for the difficulties that bisexual refugee …

Malignant Melanoma Metastatic To The Thyroid Gland: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature., Brian Kung, Md, Saba Aftab, Bs, Moira D. Wood, Md, David Rosen, Md
Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
The thyroid gland is a relatively uncommon site for a secondary malignancy; even less common is a case of malignant melanoma metastatic to the thyroid. We describe the case of a 68-year-old man who presented with a neck mass in the posterior triangle. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) identified the mass as a malignant melanoma. The patient had had no known primary skin melanoma. He underwent a left modified radical neck dissection, and the mass was discovered to be a positive lymph node. Postoperatively, he declined to undergo radio- and chemotherapy. Eighteen months later, he returned with a diffusely enlarged thyroid. …
