Premature Judgment, Todd Landman
Premature Judgment, Todd Landman
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Just as Mark Twain said in 1897, “The report of my death was an exaggeration,” many commentators have prematurely reported the death of human rights. For example, in 1999, in The Theory and Reality of the Protection of International Human Rights , J. Shand Watson sees human rights as a “mere fiction” in light of a century of state-sponsored killing. One year later, Costas Douzinas, through an appeal to history, philosophy, and psychoanalysis proclaimed the “end of human rights.” It is thus no surprise that the article by Joshua Kurlantzick is yet another attempt to warn us that human rights …

Vitamin D Deficiency In The United States: How Common Is It?, Christine N. Arnold
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Background: Vitamin D deficiency in the US is more prevalent than before estimated. Given the numerous roles vitamin D plays in the body, it is becoming apparent that the need for adequate intake is vital. It is generally accepted that adults require 1,000 IU per day.
Methods: Electronic searches were conducted using Google Scholar and Elsevier databases. Search terms included “vitamin D deficiency”, “vitamin D deficiency US”, and “vitamin D screening”. Databases were reviewed for prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the US.
Results: Populations at high risk for deficiency include the elderly, adolescents, people with darker skin, those who …

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
With countries from around the world set to meet in Copenhagen to try to hammer out a post-2012 climate change agreement, no one would disagree that a U.S. commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions is essential to such a global pact. However, despite U.S. president Obama’s recent announcement to push for a commitment to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17% by 2020, in reality it is questionable whether U.S. Congress will agree to specific emissions cuts, although they are not ambitious at all from the perspectives of both the EU and developing countries, without the imposition of carbon tariffs …
Creating An Opportunity Society, Ron Haskins
Creating An Opportunity Society, Ron Haskins
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
America presents citizens and immigrants with great opportunity to get ahead. Even so, there is less mobility in America than in other industrialized nations and perhaps less than in the past. Individuals, parents, communities, and governments at all levels can do a lot to promote mobility and opportunity. Specific proposals for increasing opportunity, many supported by good evidence, will be presented.
Cultural Differences: Their Effect On Social Skill Development, Ashley Jay
Cultural Differences: Their Effect On Social Skill Development, Ashley Jay
Social Work Theses
The level of social skill that is acquired by a child can be determined by the culture in which they are brought up. The culture of a country provides certain “guidelines” for the upbringing of children and, most importantly, the structure of their schooling. Within this schooling, children are taught the proper social behaviors. The external environment competes with natural born, biological tendencies of a child along with their home/family influences. The potential connection between culture and social skill development was examined through daycare surveys in which teachers from two countries answered questions regarding the social skill level of their …

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Women Gathered on Flat Rooftops and Thumbprints in Black Coffee is a creative dissertation that examines the lives of Arab women living in Jordan and Arab immigrants living in the United States. Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students: Perceptions Of Success, Barbara B. Blozen
Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students: Perceptions Of Success, Barbara B. Blozen
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Although there are a number of anecdotal reports on demographic characteristics and academic success of accelerated nursing students, few empirical studies have been undertaken to examine these students' success, despite this type of programs' existence for more than a decade, and only three studies have soughtto examine the perspective of the accelerated nursing student. Using Knowles' adult learning theory as a guiding framework, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, from the accelerated nursing students' perspective, the factors they reported as contributing to their success on the NCLEX-RN. This study also examined demographic characteristics of these accelerated students. …

Poverty In New Orleans: Before And After Katrina, Gloria Simo Ph.D.
Poverty In New Orleans: Before And After Katrina, Gloria Simo Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
This article explores poverty in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina and the factors which contributed to poor persons being the most affected by the storm. Both the causes and results of poverty are investigated to see how they can be alleviated as New Orleans recovers from Katrina. The Tulane/Canal neighborhood is used as a case study for this. Faculty, staff, and students from the School of Public Service and the Chaddick Institute of Metropolitan Development at DePaul University were sent there to assist with recovery efforts in accordance with the Vincentian mission. Their work is described and its effectiveness is …

Meeting Saint Vincent's Challenge In Providing Assistance To The Foreign-Born Poor: Applying The Lessons To The Asylum And Immigration Law Clinic, Sioban Albiol J.D.
Vincentian Studies
The Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic of DePaul College of Law furthers Vincent de Paul’s mission of caring for poor persons. It extends the protection of the law to low-income immigrants and asylum seekers by giving them access to legal advice that they so often lack. Background on US immigration law and its punitive effects on the poor is provided. Catholic social teaching with regard to immigration is summarized. Vincent de Paul was a migrant himself, and his approach to missions and other works indicates his special concern for foreigners. An important comparison is made between Vincent’s extension of access …

What Would Vincent Study Abroad? Option For The Poor And Systemic Change For The Development Of Socially Responsible Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D., Heather Evans M.S.
Vincentian Studies
The effectiveness of the DePaul University School of Public Service Chiapas Program is evaluated according to “Vincentian values of experiential learning, systemic change, and the option for the poor.” Including students’ own words, the article summarizes what participants learn as they work directly with poor persons, their leaders, indigenous organizations, local NGOs, and Mexican academic institutions in Chiapas. As Marco Tavanti and Heather Evans write, the program’s goal “is not only to increase knowledge and skills but to challenge and transform cultural attitudes, learn from context, and engage in professional collaboration and dialogues for social change.” The value of system …
