Fishing For A Sustainable Future: Aquaponics As A Method Of Food Production, Richard Ramsundar
Fishing For A Sustainable Future: Aquaponics As A Method Of Food Production, Richard Ramsundar
Student Theses 2015-Present
This thesis compares and explains the advantages aquaponics farming has over modern industrial intensive farming. Through a comparison natural capital usage, conservation, recycling and cost, the thesis advocates for the expansion of aquaponics usage in urban settings. The thesis also explains the history of intensive farming and aquaponics in America, the science of how aquaponics operates, the economic and environmental costs of modern intensive farming versus aquaponics farming, and the social implications of aquaponics. Lastly, I propose a policy that reallocates farm subsidies by modifying the Farm Bill. Then I propose policies that support creating a new standard of farm …

This report describes the current state of flattening filter-free (FFF) radiotherapy beams implemented on conventional linear accelerators, and is aimed primarily at practicing medical physicists. The Therapy Emerging Technology Assessment Work Group of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) formed a writing group to assess FFF technology. The published literature on FFF technology was reviewed, along with technical specifications provided by vendors. Based on this information, supplemented by the clinical experience of the group members, consensus guidelines and recommendations for implementation of FFF technology were developed. Areas in need of further investigation were identified. Removing the flattening filter …
The Next Time The World Is Going Downhill: America And The 1983 Ethiopian Famine, Bethany Sharpe
The Next Time The World Is Going Downhill: America And The 1983 Ethiopian Famine, Bethany Sharpe
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
In 1983, a massive famine struck Ethiopia. Bred by a complex array of factors, thousands of men, women, and children experienced the painful effects of this humanitarian disaster as bodies weakened and widespread death took place. Throughout the famine, an unlikely partnership took place between the Communist leader Chairman Mengistu Haile Mariam and the staunchly anti-Communist White House.[1] The partnership allowed each nation to pursue strategic foreign policy goals; the United States sought to undermine the socialist PMGSE through humanitarian aid while Mengistu attempted to salvage his government’s international reputation. Soon, global attention swirled around the issue and unlikely …

Measuring The Level Of University Student Knowledge On The U.S. Drug Policy And Harms Associated With Illicit Drug Use: A Replication Study, Ashley E. Williams
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis project is to measure the level of knowledge that university students have regarding state and national illicit drug classifications in the United States and associated penalties with these classifications, as well as the harms resulting from consuming illicit drugs. This particular study, which is to be conducted as a replication study to Higson’s campus-based study on the UK drug policy, focuses on a different campus population in regards to the U.S. drug policy. Replication studies such as these are beneficial to previous studies because such additional research will not only strengthen the findings and correct …

The Architecture Of Rural Healthcare: Supporting Access To Health In Remote And Rural Areas, Kirsten Staloch
The Architecture Of Rural Healthcare: Supporting Access To Health In Remote And Rural Areas, Kirsten Staloch
All Theses
Many remote and rural areas in the United States lack adequate access to basic healthcare services such as primary, urgent, and emergency care typically provided by healthcare systems and hospitals. In addition, many rural communities are comprised of an increasingly aging population, a growing number of patients with chronic illnesses, and in some communities a high volume of tourists that need urgent care. Remote communities struggle with providing access to these basic but essential healthcare services taken for granted in more populated areas. Changing reimbursement, evolving patterns of care delivery and advances in technology are all altering how access to …
The Guarantee Of Freedom And Dignity? Colombian Land Reform, The Alliance For Progress, And The United States, Thomas A. Costello
The Guarantee Of Freedom And Dignity? Colombian Land Reform, The Alliance For Progress, And The United States, Thomas A. Costello
Honors Scholar Theses
Although the United States had involved itself in programs of land reform in Korea, Japan, and Western Europe in the mid-20th century, prior to the establishment of the Alliance for Progress, there was little discussion of encouraging such programs in Latin America. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the attitudes towards land reform in Colombia prior to the signing of Colombian Law 135. By examining documents from the Kennedy administration, this thesis proves the United States exerted its influence on Latin American nations in the early 1960’s to promote the enacting of national agrarian reform projects. Furthermore, …
The Affordable Care Act: Five Years Later, Andrew Dana Izatt
The Affordable Care Act: Five Years Later, Andrew Dana Izatt
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The challenges facing the American health care system are well known and manifold. The United States pays substantially more for its health care than any other developed, industrialized nation. Per capita health care spending in 2012 was $8,745, up from $356 in 1970 without marked improvements in life expectancy, quality of life, or outcomes. But despite all of our health spending, large portions of our population go without health insurance. Being uninsured carries real consequences. A report published in the American Journal of Public Health, by researchers at Harvard Medical School, using statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and …

Price Slides Within Cattle Markets Over Time And Space, Justin Edward Dickamore
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The production of cattle in the United State is a very large business. Production begins at the cow-calf level, where a calf is born and raised to a specific weight. This weight is the weaning weight and averages between 300-600 pounds. The calf is then typically shipped to a feedlot, where it is fed a high corn ration which increases the weight of animal quickly and cost effectively to reach a sufficient slaughter weight. Cattle production takes place primarily in 5 different geographical locations which include the North Central, Southeast, Northern Plains, Southern Plains, and West regions. Due to the …

Strategies For Chinese International Students To Overcome The Challenges Of Studying In The United States, Yuerong Chen
Counseling
Using current research and literature, this project discusses the challenges that Chinese international students may have while they experience cultural adjustment in the United States. In addition, this project also examines strategies for Chinese international students to smooth the cultural transition during their stay in the United States. There is research about Chinese immigrants' cultural transition and international students' transitional periods. However, there is a very limited amount of research specifically on Chinese international students' cultural adjustment in the United States. Educating the Chinese international students, educators and counselors in international institutions about the challenges of cultural transition and the …

Asian American Congressional Representation, Christine Kim
Asian American Congressional Representation, Christine Kim
Featured Research
While studies have researched substantive representation of other minority groups, this paper is the first to examine Asian American congressional representation. I ask two questions. First do Asian American legislators vote differently on roll call votes than other members of their party? Second, do Asian American constituents get less of what they want from government compared to White American? I use a quantitative analysis to answer both of these questions. First, I examine the interest group scores of Asian American legislators compared to other legislators from the same political party to determine whether Asian American legislators tend to vote differently. …

Journal Articles: College of Nursing
OVERVIEW: In 2014, the authors published the results of a study investigating nurses' use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the care of a live simulated patient requiring contact and airborne precautions. The 24 participants were video-recorded as they donned and doffed PPE. Variations in practices that had the potential to cause contamination were noted. In this article, the authors comment on those variations, analyzing each element of proper PPE protocols and examining why the behaviors are a safety concern for the nurse and a potential risk for disease transmission in the hospital or other clinical area. The authors note …

BACKGROUND: Many Veterans Health Administration primary care providers (PCPs) have small female patient caseloads, making it challenging for them to build and maintain their women's health (WH) knowledge and skills. To address this issue, we implemented a longitudinal WH-focused educational and virtual consultation program using televideo conferencing.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a formative evaluation of the program's development and implementation.
RESEARCH DESIGN: We used mixed methods including participant surveys, semi-structured interviews, stakeholder meeting field notes, and participation logs. We conducted qualitative content analysis for interviews and field notes, and quantitative tabulation for surveys and logs.
SUBJECTS: Veterans Health Administration WH PCPs. …

Tractor overturns continue to be the leading cause of death on U.S. farms. While rollover protective structures (ROPS) are effective in preventing these fatalities, they are underutilized due to a number of barriers. Past programs in the U.S. and abroad have targeted this area of agricultural safety; however, a national program is not yet in place for U.S. farmers. This study seeks to build a national partnership to address tractor overturn fatalities by increasing the number of tractors with ROPS. A diverse, multisector steering committee has been organized and is working together using Whole System in a Room methods. This …

Asian Dance/Movement Therapy Educators’ Experiences Of Teaching Dance/Movement Therapy In East Asia After Training In The Us, Ko Kyung Soon
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived learning and teaching experiences of native East Asian DMT educators who completed their DMT education in the US and then returned to their home countries. The researcher intended to learn how participants experienced their Western DMT education and how they adapted what they had learned to teaching DMT to students in East Asia. Six participants were successfully recruited from four East Asian countries (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan). Three types of data were gathered via a researcher-designed demographic questionnaire, the Asian American Values Scale-Multidimensional, and individual interviews. The Nvivo10 software program …

New media (including online and cellular technologies) are being embraced around the world, and younger people have led the way in their adoption. These technologies have spread particularly quickly in the Middle East as a result of innovations in satellite, cellular, and Internet technology. In addition, the Arab Spring was a major milestone for new media adoption in the Middle East and helped define appropriate uses for these technologies. Although they have been used for activism and expression, evidence suggests that these are not (or perhaps are no longer) the primary uses of these technologies among young Arabs. Drawing on …

Repatriate . . . Then Compensate: Why The United States Owes Reparation Payments To Former Guantánamo Detainees, Cameron Bell
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
In late 2001, U.S. government officials chose Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as the site to house the “war on terror” detainees. Since then, 779 individuals have been detained at Guantánamo. Many of the detainees have endured years of detention, cruel and degrading treatment, and for some, torture—conduct that violates well-established prohibitions against torture and inhumane treatment under both general international law and the law of war. Under these bodies of law, the United States is required to make reparation—through restitution, compensation, and satisfaction—for acts that violate its international obligations. But the United States has not offered financial compensation to any Guantánamo …

Emergency physicians have used point-of-care ultrasonography since the 1990 s. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians have more recently adopted this technology. Point-of-care ultrasonography is used for various scenarios, particularly the evaluation of soft tissue infections or blunt abdominal trauma and procedural guidance. To date, there are no published statements from national organizations specifically for pediatric emergency physicians describing the incorporation of point-of-care ultrasonography into their practice. This document outlines how pediatric emergency departments may establish a formal point-of-care ultrasonography program. This task includes appointing leaders with expertise in point-of-care ultrasonography, effectively training and credentialing physicians in the department, and providing ongoing …

Point-of-care ultrasonography is increasingly being used to facilitate accurate abstract and timely diagnoses and to guide procedures. It is important for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians caring for patients in the emergency department to receive adequate and continued point-of-care ultrasonography training for those indications used in their practice setting. Emergency departments should have credentialing and quality assurance programs. PEM fellowships should provide appropriate training to physician trainees. Hospitals should provide privileges to physicians who demonstrate competency in point-of-care ultrasonography. Ongoing research will provide the necessary measures to define the optimal training and competency assessment standards. Requirements for credentialing and hospital …
