War Tax Free: Institutional Resiliency For War In The United States, Sarah Nelson Bakhtiari
War Tax Free: Institutional Resiliency For War In The United States, Sarah Nelson Bakhtiari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The obsolescence of war taxes in the United States after 1968 is a product of the state's increased institutional resiliency for war. Historically, war taxes were raised for purposes of revenue generation for contemporaneous war spending or wartime inflation control. The state's development of a robust tax system that provides high and automatically increasing revenues over time, along with monetary mechanisms for price stability, obviate the need for war taxes. In particular, the development of the income tax system and the use of inflation-targeting monetary policy expanded the state's warfighting capacity without reliance on war taxes. These developments suggest a …

Project ECHO Bibliography
BACKGROUND: Approximately 100,000 persons with sickle cell disease (SCD) live in the United States, including 15,000 in the Midwest. Unfortunately, many patients experience poor health outcomes due to limited access to primary care providers (PCPs) who are prepared to deliver evidence-based SCD care. Sickle Treatment and Outcomes Research in the Midwest (STORM) is a regional network established to improve care and outcomes for individuals with SCD living in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
METHODS: STORM investigators hypothesized that Project ECHO
RESULTS: Network leads in each of the STORM states assisted with developing the curriculum and are recruiting providers …

“Buy With Your Heart, Not Your Head”: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House And Consumption In The Postwar United States, Joy E. Feagan
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the various reproductions of Eric Hodgins’ story, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, released in text, film, and radio between 1946 and 1951. Exploring the differences in the narrative across time and media, I argue, provides a better understanding of the various media that reproduced the story, as well as the mediadriven consumerism of the early cold war period. What was the relationship between media (print, film, and radio) and mass consumption in the post-World War II United States? And what were the consequences of this evolving relationship? I credit the origins of this relationship to postwar …
“Foreign In A Domestic Sense”: An Examination Of Changes And Continuities In Factors Shaping Puerto Rican Emigration To The U.S. Mainland, Gerina Gjergji
“Foreign In A Domestic Sense”: An Examination Of Changes And Continuities In Factors Shaping Puerto Rican Emigration To The U.S. Mainland, Gerina Gjergji
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines emigration from Puerto Rico to the mainland U.S. with the aim of uncovering the factors that account for the large exodus of people from 1898 to present. A review of how major theories of migration have developed over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries suggests several potential explanatory factors. The case analysis is based on the study of Puerto Rican economic and political history, which shapes the socio-economic conditions that drive migration. After a review of earlier waves of migration, the analysis focuses in more depth on the current cycle of migration. An appraisal of migratory movements, government …

Epidemiology Faculty Publications
Background. To examine whether the US EPA (2010) lung cancer risk estimate derived from the high arsenic exposures (10-934 µg/L) in southwest Taiwan accurately predicts the US experience from low arsenic exposures (3-59 µg/L). Methods. Analyses have been limited to US counties solely dependent on underground sources for their drinking water supply with median arsenic levels of ≥3 µg/L. Results. Cancer risks (slopes) were found to be indistinguishable from zero for males and females. The addition of arsenic level did not significantly increase the explanatory power of the models. Stratified, or categorical, analysis yielded relative risks that hover about 1.00. …

The Role Of Brazil And The United States In The International Promotion Of The Right To A Healthy Environment, José Adércio Leite Sampaio, Beatriz Souza Costa
University of Baltimore Journal of International Law
This article has the objective of analyzing the role played by Brazil and the United States in protecting the right to a healthy environment at an international level, especially at the World Trade Organization level. First, we must try to identify the fundamental right to a healthy environment, in its internal dimension and as a human right, at the international level. We used the bibliographic technique and deductive methodology to develop the research. The results at the conclusion evidence that the behavior of political and economic agents has a direct impact on the level of environmental protection. In the United …
Social Disparities In Exposure To Point-Of-Sale Cigarette Marketing, Mohammad Siahpush, Evi A. Farazi, Jungyoon Kim, Tzeyu L. Michaud, Aaron Yoder, Ghada Soliman, Melissa Tibbits, Minh N. Nguyen, Raees A. Shaikh
Social Disparities In Exposure To Point-Of-Sale Cigarette Marketing, Mohammad Siahpush, Evi A. Farazi, Jungyoon Kim, Tzeyu L. Michaud, Aaron Yoder, Ghada Soliman, Melissa Tibbits, Minh N. Nguyen, Raees A. Shaikh
Journal Articles: Epidemiology
While most ecological studies have shown that higher levels of point-of-sale (POS) cigarette marketing are associated with larger proportions of residents from lower socioeconomic and minority backgrounds in neighborhoods, there are no studies that examine individual-level social disparities in exposure to POS cigarette marketing among smokers in the United States. Our aim was to examine these disparities in a Midwestern metropolitan area in the United States. We conducted a telephone survey to collect data on 999 smokers. Cigarette marketing was measured by asking respondents three questions about noticing advertisements, promotions, and displays of cigarettes within their respective neighborhoods. The questions …

The Association Between Latent Tuberculosis Infection And Diabetes Mellitus Control In The United States, Whitney L. Remy
The Association Between Latent Tuberculosis Infection And Diabetes Mellitus Control In The United States, Whitney L. Remy
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Rationale: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is recognized as a common comorbid condition for tuberculosis (TB). Those with comorbid conditions are more likely to develop active TB, to have trouble with treatment, and to have more severe symptoms.
Objective: To measure the prevalence and distribution of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and DM control in the United State and test their association when measured by tuberculin skin test (TST) or QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube blood test (QFT-GIT) and by HbA1c, respectively. Literature Review: One-third of the world population is infected with TB. Ten percent of TB cases worldwide are linked to diabetes mellitus. Studies …
Environmental Law—Cercla Enforcement: Terminology And Meaning Of “Treatment” Arranger Liability, Daniel J. Depasquale
Environmental Law—Cercla Enforcement: Terminology And Meaning Of “Treatment” Arranger Liability, Daniel J. Depasquale
Western New England Law Review
CERCLA arranger liability was forever changed by the Supreme Court decision in Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Ry. Co. v. United States, 556 U.S. 599 (2009). In the aftermath, EPA has been hamstrung with the difficulty of substantiating a Potentially Responsible Party’s (“PRP”) intent to arrange for disposal of a hazardous substance, as well as attempting to overcome the ever-increasing scientific capabilities of PRPs to demonstrate that proportionality of damages is appropriate for a given Superfund site. This Article is the first in depth analysis teasing apart what it means for a PRP to arrange for disposal, as opposed to …
