Obamacare And The Politics Of Universal Health Insurance Coverage In The United States, Daniel Beland, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan Jul 2016

Obamacare And The Politics Of Universal Health Insurance Coverage In The United States, Daniel Beland, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

In the USA, universal coverage has long been a key objective of liberal reformers. Yet, despite the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) (commonly known as ‘Obamacare’) in 2010, the USA is not set to provide health care coverage to all, even if and when that reform is fully implemented. This article explores this issue by asking the following question: Why was a clear commitment to universal coverage, the norm in other industrialized countries, excluded as a core objective of the PPACA and how has post-enactment politics at both the federal and the state level further …

Syphilis In Georgia, 2009-2014, Kathryn Moore, Leonardo Parker, Joy Wells

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: In the period of 2002-2014, Georgia has ranked among the top three states in the United States for rates of primary and secondary syphilis cases, creating a continuing need to analyze the data and to plan and implement disease prevention efforts.

Methods: The present effort involved analysis of data from Georgia’s electronic disease reporting system, State Electronic Disease Surveillance System (SendSS), including demographic characteristics by year for the period of 2009-2014 and behavioral data obtained from interviews with communicable disease specialists.

Results: In Georgia, from 2009-2014, primary and secondary syphilis, the infectious stages of the disease, were seen most …

What Can State Talk Tell Us About Punitiveness? A Comparison Of Responses To Political Mass Shootings In The United States And Norway, Kimberlee G. Waggoner Jul 2016

What Can State Talk Tell Us About Punitiveness? A Comparison Of Responses To Political Mass Shootings In The United States And Norway, Kimberlee G. Waggoner

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Highlighting the culturally contingent nature of state reactions to crime, the present work focuses on state talk issued by the U.S. and Norwegian governments in the aftermath of politically motivated mass shootings. The research is guided by the question: how does state talk—conditioned by economic, political, and cultural forces—facilitate or constrain punitive responses to political mass shootings? Here, the focus is on the January 8th 2011 shooting of U.S. representative Gabrielle Giffords and her constituents and the July 22nd 2011 bombing of a government building and shooting of a youth political camp in Norway. These two cases illustrate how state …

Coping with Water Scarcity in River Basins Worldwide: Lessons Learned from Shared Experiences (Martz Summer Conference, June 9-10)

Water scarcity is increasingly dominating headlines throughout the world. In the southwestern USA, the looming water shortages on the Colorado River system and the unprecedented drought in California are garnering the greatest attention. Similar stories of scarcity and crisis can be found across the globe, suggesting an opportunity for sharing lessons and innovations. For example, the Colorado River and Australia's Murray-Darling Basin likely can share many lessons, as both systems were over-allocated, feature multiple jurisdictions, face similar climatic risks and drought stresses, and struggle to balance human demands with environmental needs. In this conference we cast our net broadly, exploring …

BACKGROUND: In patients with severe aortic stenosis at increased risk for surgery, self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is associated with improved 2-year survival compared with surgery.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine whether this clinical benefit was sustained over time.

METHODS: Patients with severe aortic stenosis deemed at increased risk for surgery by a multidisciplinary heart team were randomized 1:1 to TAVR or open surgical valve replacement (SAVR). Three-year clinical and echocardiographic outcomes were obtained in those patients with an attempted procedure.

RESULTS: A total of 797 patients underwent randomization at 45 U.S. centers; 750 patients underwent an attempted …

Agenda: Indigenous Water Justice Symposium, University Of Colorado Boulder. Getches-Wilkinson Center For Natural Resources, Energy, And The Environment

Indigenous Water Justice Symposium (June 6)

Indigenous peoples throughout the world face diverse and often formidable challenges of what might be termed “water justice.” On one hand, these challenges involve issues of distributional justice that concern Indigenous communities’ relative abilities to access and use water for self-determined purposes. On the other hand, issues of procedural justice are frequently associated with water allocation and management, encompassing fundamental matters like representation within governance entities and participation in decision-making processes. Yet another realm of water justice in which disputes are commonplace relates to the persistence of, and respect afforded to, Indigenous communities’ cultural traditions and values surrounding water—more specifically, …

Saving Animals: Everyday Practices Of Care And Rescue In The Us Animal Sanctuary Movement, Elan L. Abrell Jun 2016

Saving Animals: Everyday Practices Of Care And Rescue In The Us Animal Sanctuary Movement, Elan L. Abrell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This multi-sited ethnography of the US animal sanctuary movement is based on 24 months of research at a range of animal rescue facilities, including a companion animal shelter in Texas, exotic animal sanctuaries in Florida and Hawaii, and a farm animal sanctuary in New York. In the last three decades, animal welfare activists have established hundreds of sanctuaries across the United States in an attempt to save tens of thousands of animals from factory farms, roadside zoos, and other sites of contested animal treatment. These facilities function as laboratories where activists conceive and operationalize new models for ethical relationships with …

Saving: Stem Cell Science, Christian Adoption, And Frozen Embryo Potential In The United States, Risa Cromer Jun 2016

Saving: Stem Cell Science, Christian Adoption, And Frozen Embryo Potential In The United States, Risa Cromer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the controversial fates of frozen human embryos left over from in vitro fertilization procedures and frozen for future in the United States at the turn of the twenty-first century. Stem cell researchers covet human embryos as wellsprings of biovalue for curing human diseases and generating new forms of wealth. At the same time, pro-life Christians target excess embryos for rescue as adoptable orphans and mobilize the frozen unborn within legal strategies to redefine personhood. As a comparative ethnography, this dissertation reveals what these putatively opposing solutions share in common by examining why and how frozen reproductive remainders …

Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

The objectives of the study were as follows: to examine the national trend of pediatric atypical antipsychotic (AAP) use in the United States; to identify primary mental disorders associated with AAPs; to estimate the strength of independent associations between patient/provider characteristics and AAP use. Data are from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. First, average AAP prescription rates among 4 and 18-year-old patients between 1993 and 2010 were estimated. Second, data from 2007 to 2010 were combined and analyzed to identify primary mental disorders related to AAP prescription. Third, a multivariate logistic …

The Rwandan Diaspora In Canada And The United States: Reconciliation And Justice, Jennifer J. Marson Jun 2016

The Rwandan Diaspora In Canada And The United States: Reconciliation And Justice, Jennifer J. Marson

Dissertations

This dissertation analyzed the attempts at achieving justice and reconciliation among the Rwandan diaspora located in Canada and the United States. Following the 1994 Rwandan genocide, many Rwandans fled and a modest diaspora found a home in various locations throughout Canada and the United States. The diaspora, located thousands of miles from the institutional mechanism of justice and reconciliation in Rwanda, are subject to many of the same concerns regarding justice and reconciliation as those who remain in Rwanda. This research focused primarily on how this specific diaspora attempted to achieve justice and reconciliation, if institutional mechanisms (gacaca) in Rwanda …

Factors Affecting Climate Change Mitigation Policy Implementation, Kelly M. Anderson May 2016

Factors Affecting Climate Change Mitigation Policy Implementation, Kelly M. Anderson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Why do some states have policies that aggressively reduce carbon emissions, while others ignore the threat of climate change? In a world where increasingly extreme weather patterns threaten food production and species extinction, and where rising sea levels and frequent storms damage coastal infrastructure, it is now essential for states to mitigate these effects.

My paper analyzes the role of media attention on climate change and environmental association membership rates on the most recent climate change mitigation policies of South Africa, the United States, and Germany. It argues that media and environmental associations influence a population’s desire to reduce carbon …

The Excluded: An Estimate Of The Consequences Of Denying Social Security To Agricultural And Domestic Workers, David Stoesz May 2016

The Excluded: An Estimate Of The Consequences Of Denying Social Security To Agricultural And Domestic Workers, David Stoesz

Center for Social Development Research

The Social Security Act of 1935 explicitly denied Social Security coverage to several categories of workers, including those employed in domestic and agricultural positions. This exclusion disproportionately affected minorities of color, particularly those living in Southern states. This paper elaborates the context of that decision and presents an estimate of the decision’s cost in denied benefits. It then examines the far-reaching implications of the exclusion, demonstrating that the decision has been replicated repeatedly in U.S. social policy.

A Comparison Of Health Care Systems In The Western World, Katherine Regan Lawall

Senior Theses

This senior thesis evaluates the health care systems of the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and Denmark, before looking at how their approaches could be adapted to the U.S. system. I picked these specific countries due to their similarity in geographic location, demographic, religious affiliations, and population size but have different styles of health care systems (public, mixed, and private) that are set up in varying ways. Additionally, these populations have similar health issues to one another, such as aging-populations, and to the U.S. as well like the top causes of death. However, these four western European countries have longer life expediencies …

Same Story, Different Name: A Survey Of The Causes And Effects Of The Medicalization Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sarah Elizabeth Truesdale May 2016

Same Story, Different Name: A Survey Of The Causes And Effects Of The Medicalization Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sarah Elizabeth Truesdale

Senior Theses

As society sees a rise in the addition of medical issues to the DSM that were previously deemed non-medical conditions, there is reason for a multi-variate analysis to take place. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder was added to the DSM-III in 1980 and has seen change both in the DSM-IV and DSM V. To understand these transitions, we start with a historical analysis of the mental health condition to legitimize its need for medicalization. This will then be followed by an analysis of the medicalization process in order to understand the progress that has been made as a mental health condition that …

Resettling Syrian Refugees In The U.S.: Regional Stability And Saving Lives, Alexander Kochenburger May 2016

Resettling Syrian Refugees In The U.S.: Regional Stability And Saving Lives, Alexander Kochenburger

Washington Semester Program

In the greatest humanitarian catastrophe since World War II, millions of Syrians have fled their homes since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011. This thesis argues that the United States needs to resettle more Syrian refugees to prevent further destabilization in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. Specifically, the United States should go above President Obama’s current proposal to accept 10,000 Syrians this year and follow the recommendation of former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and resettle 65,000 additional Syrian refugees over the next five years. In addition, most of these 65,000 refugees should be families with young children and …

Honors Projects

This study will examine how the correlation between air and water quality and the population demographics of India, South Africa, and the United States. India is a country with a growing population, increasing income inequality, and gender roles that reflect its status as a developing nation. South Africa is much smaller in area and the population is beginning to level off, but South Africa’s income inequality is growing much faster than India’s and gender inequality is less of an issue in South Africa. The population of the United States is decreasing and gender roles are fairly equal, despite income inequality …

A Study That Critically Engages Secondary Language Acquisition And How It Relates To Immigrants Developing Cultural Competence, Susan Alecia Nelson

Sustainability and Social Justice

This study seeks to critically engage in the topic of secondary language acquisition to explore the role it plays in immigration, particularly as this relates to developing cultural competence. Further, the research examines the barriers to second language acquisition, and also makes recommendations for reducing those barriers. This will be done by examining literature that analyzes the role that secondary language learning plays in immigrants becoming culturally competent within the United States, and will look at this more in depth by focusing on Mexican immigrants who have come to the United States.

Mapping Researcher Mobility: Measuring Research Collaboration Among Apec Economies, Ali Radloff May 2016

Mapping Researcher Mobility: Measuring Research Collaboration Among Apec Economies, Ali Radloff

Higher education research

Researcher mobility is an important form of cross-border education (CBE). It has the potential to generate significant benefits for economies as expert scholars and scientists come together to solve some of the most pressing challenges in the contemporary world. Among members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) researcher mobility can strengthen ties between economies and enable the minimisation of barriers to economic growth and sustainability. There are not currently any comparable or rigorous data available on researcher mobility among APEC economies. Proxy measures are needed to gain a sense of the extent to which researchers in APEC economies are collaborating …

Waging The War Against Unpaid Labor: A Call To Revoke Fact Sheet #71 In Light Of Recent Unpaid Internship Litigation, Rachel P. Willer May 2016

Waging The War Against Unpaid Labor: A Call To Revoke Fact Sheet #71 In Light Of Recent Unpaid Internship Litigation, Rachel P. Willer

University of Richmond Law Review

Part I of this comment provides an overview of prevailing agency and judicial interpretations of unpaid internships. Part II describes recent internship litigation and the trend towards courts abandoning the Wage and Hour Division's six-factor test in favor of a more expansive primary beneficiary test. Part III suggests that Fact Sheet #71 is an outdated model that is inapplicable to contemporary internships. The Wage and Hour Division's six-factor test lacks the "force of law" and should not warrant un- due judicial deference. Alternatively, the primary beneficiary test, articulated in the Second Circuit's holding in Glatt v. Fox Searchlight Pictures, Inc." …
