Healing A Nation Wounded By A Pandemic, Blake Wetzel
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Emerging in late 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the United States. There is still so much about this virus that is unknown. It has had a negative effect on education, the economy, and the lifestyle of Americans. Covid-19 has caused many people to be hospitalized, and has even claimed many lives. There are many things that the American people can do to help America and its people recover. Americans must take social responsibility. They must follow the guidelines, such as mask wearing and social distancing, to stop the virus from spreading. Americans can also help out …

Overview of Key Findings
Tobacco Use. The prevalence of any past year tobacco use was significantly higher among non-metropolitan than metropolitan adolescents (13.9% vs. 8.3%). Daily cigarette use in the past 30 days was more than 3 times more prevalent among non-metropolitan than metropolitan adolescents (1.0% vs. 0.3%) and the difference was also statistically significant.
Alcohol Use. Alcohol was the most commonly used substance among both non-metropolitan and metropolitan adolescents, although the differences in prevalence rates for past year and past 30-day alcohol use were not statistically significant. In the past year, 21.8% of non-metropolitan and 21.7% of …

How Parents And Their Children Used Social Media And Technology At The Beginning Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Associations With Anxiety., Michelle Drouin, Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jessica Pater, Tammy Toscos Phd
Health Services and Informatics Research
In this study, we examined parents' (n = 260) perceptions of their own and their children's use of social media and other types of communication technologies in the beginning stages of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related sanctions (e.g., social distancing) in the United States. We also examined associations between social media and technology use and anxiety. On average, parents reported that both they and their children (especially teenagers aged 13-18) had increased technology and social media use since the beginning of social distancing. Moreover, even after controlling for demographic factors, structural equation models showed that parents and children with …

Heart and Vascular Articles
BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have worsened clinical outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention; however, limited evidence exists in patients undergoing peripheral vascular intervention (PVI).
PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the effect of CKD on outcomes following PVI for symptomatic peripheral artery disease.
METHODS: Using patients from the LIBERTY 360 study, we compared the rates of 30 day and 1 year major adverse vascular events (MAVE), a composite of all-cause mortality, major amputation, and target vessel/lesion revascularization, between patients with and without CKD (estimated glomular filtration rate less than 60) following PVI. Multivariable adjustment was performed to assess for …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Short interpregnancy interval (IPI) is associated with risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, few studies have evaluated the role of depression as a risk factor for short IPI. Puerto Rican women in the United States experience disparities in adverse birth outcomes and have the highest birth rates.
Methods: We analyzed the association between prenatal depressive symptoms and IPI in Proyecto Buena Salud, a prospective cohort of predominantly Puerto Rican women in Western Massachusetts (2006–2011). Depression was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in early, mid, and late pregnancy. We calculated follow-up time as the difference between the …

Association Of Patient-Centered Medical Home Designation And Quality Indicators Within Hrsa-Funded Community Health Center Delivery Sites, Nathaniel Bell, Rebecca Wilkerson, Kathy Mayfield-Smith, Ana Lòpez-De Fede
Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) adoption is an important strategy to help improve primary care quality within Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) community health centers (CHC), but evidence of its effect thus far remains mixed. A limitation of previous evaluations has been the inability to account for the proportion of CHC delivery sites that are designated medical homes.
METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study using HRSA Uniform Data System (UDS) and certification files from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the Joint Commission (JC). Datasets were linked through geocoding and an approximate string-matching algorithm. Predicted probability scores were …

Pa, Ma, And Fa: Private Lives Of Nineteenth-Century American Vincentians, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
John Rybolt summarizes the correspondence written by nine Vincentians to members of the prominent Willcox family of Ivy Mills, Pennsylvania. As Rybolt explains, “These letters offer probably the only surviving glimpse of the private lives and thoughts of American Vincentians in the mid-nineteenth century.” The Vincentians and the Willcoxes were close: the Vincentians called their main correspondent, Mary Willcox, Ma and her husband Pa. One of the Vincentians referred to himself as Fa. The priests helped Ma with her spiritual development, and she and her family were surrogates for the families the Vincentians had left behind in Europe. All the …

Bishop John Timon, C.M., Sisters Of Charity Hospital, And The Cholera Epidemic Of 1849, Dennis Castillo Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
When Bishop John Timon arrived in Buffalo, New York, he saw an urgent need for a hospital, especially because the city had a large population of immigrants and other working poor who could not afford medical care. The attempts of some Buffalo physicians to establish a hospital had been staunchly opposed by their colleagues for seven years. Bishop Timon and the Sisters of Charity were able to start their hospital in three months. Bishop Timon chose the sisters for their health care experience and because many of the sisters were immigrants themselves, which would put their patients at ease. The …
What Constitution Says About Peaceful Transfer Of Power, John M. Greabe
What Constitution Says About Peaceful Transfer Of Power, John M. Greabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
[excerpt] I recently was asked whether the Constitution requires a peaceful transfer of power following an election. Sadly, the questions is not merely theoretical. President Trump has stated that, if he loses the upcoming election, it will be through fraud. And he has made it clear that he will be unrestrained in his response to any efforts to oust him from office through an election he pronounces fraudulent.
The question of whether the Constitution requires a peaceful transfer of power prompts consideration of how we should conceptualize our Constitution. Is the Constitution merely the document that was written in 1787, …

Strategies For Effective Dissemination Of Research To United States Policymakers: A Systematic Review, Laura Ellen Ashcraft, Deirdre A Quinn, Ross C Brownson
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Research has the potential to influence US social policy; however, existing research in this area lacks a coherent message. The Model for Dissemination of Research provides a framework through which to synthesize lessons learned from research to date on the process of translating research to US policymakers.
METHODS: The peer-reviewed and grey literature was systematically reviewed to understand common strategies for disseminating social policy research to policymakers in the United States. We searched Academic Search Premier, PolicyFile, SocINDEX, Social Work Abstracts, and Web of Science from January 1980 through December 2019. Articles were independently reviewed and thematically analyzed by …

Disability And Health Outcomes Of Eastern European Immigrants To The United States, Ina Palii
Disability And Health Outcomes Of Eastern European Immigrants To The United States, Ina Palii
MA Research Paper
Eastern European immigrants are one of the largest groups of immigrants in the United States. However, little is known about their health outcomes after arrival to the US. This study addresses the importance of differentiating Eastern European immigrants as a distinct category of immigrants with health outcomes that may differ from those born in the US, or other immigrants. This study examined the health of Eastern European immigrants in the United States, by focusing on three measures of disability – ambulatory, independent living, and self-care difficulties – and comparing them to US-born Whites and to other immigrants. The study uses …

Impacts Of Public Land And Income On Obesity In The United States, Megan Brower, Gracie Carlsen
Student Scholarship - College of Business
This study looked at state public land acreage, average median income, poverty rates, and unemployment rates to analyze the significance of their impact on obesity in the United States. Percentage of public land for each state was gathered from a data overview of 2018, data for the economic factors of influence were from 2017-2019, and obesity rate information was collected from 2019. The hypothesis was that there would be a negative relationship to obesity with public land and average median income; and a positive relationship to obesity with poverty and unemployment rates. This study found there to be a negative …

AIM: To assess whether an enhanced category combining suicides with non-suicide drug self-intoxication fatalities more effectively captures the burden of self-injury mortality (SIM) in the USA among US non-Hispanic black and Hispanic populations and women irrespective of race/ethnicity.
METHODS: This observational study used deidentified national mortality data for 2008-2017 from the CDC's
RESULTS: While the suicide rate increased by 29% for blacks, 36% for Hispanics and 25% for non-Hispanic whites between 2008 and 2017, corresponding SIM rate increases were larger at 109%, 69% and 55% (p
CONCLUSION: Application of SIM exposed substantial excess burdens from substance poisoning relative to suicide …
