Association Of Long-Term Trajectories Of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status With Weight Change In Older Adults, Dong Zhang, Cici Bauer, Tiffany Powell-Wiley, Qian Xiao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

IMPORTANCE: Studying long-term changes in neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) may help to better understand the associations between neighborhood exposure and weight outcomes and provide evidence supporting neighborhood interventions. Little previous research has been done to examine associations between neighborhood SES and weight loss, a risk factor associated with poor health outcomes in the older population.

OBJECTIVE: to determine whether improvements in neighborhood SES are associated with reduced likelihoods of excessive weight gain and excessive weight loss and whether declines are associated with increased likelihoods of these weight outcomes.

DESIGN, STUDY, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted using data from …

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is offered in integrated treatment models addressing both substance use and other health conditions within the same system. This often includes offering medications for OUD in general medical settings. It remains uncertain whether integrated OUD treatment models are preferred to non-integrated models, where treatment is provided within a distinct treatment system. This study aimed to explore preferences for integrated versus non-integrated treatment models among people with OUD and examine what factors may influence preferences.

METHODS: This qualitative study recruited participants (n = 40) through Craigslist advertisements and flyers posted in treatment programs …

Throughout the course of the pandemic, Population Council researchers have been tracking how COVID-19 data is reported and analyzed using a comprehensive analysis of 62 COVID-19 data sources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and health departments across 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC), and ten cities. We assessed data completeness for COVID-19 testing and four outcomes (cases, hospitalizations, recoveries, and deaths), and examined disaggregation of COVID-19 testing and outcomes by a core set of demographic indicators, including age, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, geography, and underlying health conditions. This analysis also investigated how social and community level …

Mental Health And Psychosocial Functioning In Recently Separated U.S. Women Veterans: Trajectories And Bi-Directional Relationships, Karen A. Lawrence, Dawne Vogt, Adam Dugan, Shawn R. Nigam, Emily Slade, Brian N. Smith

Social Work Faculty Publications

Prior research on the relationship between veterans’ mental health and psychosocial functioning has primarily relied on male samples. Here, we investigated prospective longitudinal relationships between mental health and psychosocial functioning in 554 female Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans who were surveyed three times between two- and seven-years following separation from service. Mixed effects modeling revealed that increasing depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity predicted declines in work functioning. Increasing PTSD severity predicted declining parental functioning and worsening depression predicted a decline in relationship functioning. In turn, decreased work and intimate relationship functioning predicted increased PTSD and depression symptom severity …

The Impacts Of Health Insurance On The Uninsured And Underinsured, Isabela Camayd

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

In the United States the American healthcare is constantly up for debate, it seems to only be aimed towards individuals who can afford insurance. Those individuals who can afford insurance must have a full-time or part time job to obtain the benefits from the employer. For those individuals who are underinsured and uninsured there could be endless reasons holding them from obtaining their own insurance, private insurance, company insurance and many others. There are a few organizations in place to help those who are in need of insurance such as, the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and, Medicaid.

Evaluating The Nutritional Adequacy Of Peruvian-American Children, Delainey Dietz

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As people move and integrate cultures, nutritional trends may change from those of their native country to those of their new country. With today's increasing global immigration, studies have only scratched the surface of the impact of acculturation on children's health and nutrition. Specifically, the Peruvian-American diet is one that has garnered minimal research. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the common foods and drinks that Peruvian-American children consume, assess the children's physical health, and discuss the possible causative factors of any diet trends. The population sampled is children under 18 years living in the United States whose …

A Review And Comparison Of U.S. State Wildlife Action Plans For Stonefly (Insecta, Plecoptera) Species Of Greatest Conservation Need, Kathryn Greene

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs) were created in order to identify Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and develop plans to prevent their populations from further decline and the possibility of being listed as threatened or endangered. Which SGCNs are included are decided based on characteristics that determine their vulnerability. As of early 2021, approximately 720stoneflies (Insecta, Plecoptera) species are found in the U.S., but only 143 are listed as SGCN. Only 29 states have stoneflies included on their SGCN lists, but 37 states use EPT (Ephemeroptera + Plecoptera + Trichoptera) metrics when assessing water quality issues in running water …

Identity Formation During Nonviolent Protests: A Thematic And Structural Narrative Analysis Of Interviews Conducted With March For Our Lives Protesters, Richard Shawn Queeney

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

In the spring of 2018, student protesters around the United States took to the streets and campuses of their schools to call for tighter gun control laws following the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, FL. The highly visible nonviolent protest movement, known as the March for Our Lives (MFOL), was carried out by young people still in middle or high school and was fraught with risks that included disagreement with parents, teachers, and school administrators, detention or other penalties on their school record, and threats of violent harassment from counter protesters. MFOL protesters in and …

Advancing Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence In A Community Hospital: Consultative Report, Tanya Seaton Jan 2021

Advancing Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence In A Community Hospital: Consultative Report, Tanya Seaton

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the top three leading causes of death in both men and women, as well as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the United States. Screening, on the other hand, can aid in the detection and prevention of CRC. Early reports suggested that colorectal screening compliance could significantly reduce the risk of mortality associated with CRC in people aged 50 to 75 years. Colonoscopy cancellations have been identified as a significant contributor to non-compliance with CRC screening in subsequent studies. However, research indicates that patient navigators are used …

The Relationship Between Insurance And Health Outcomes Of Diabetes Mellitus Patients In Maryland: A Retrospective Archival Study, Soo-Hoon Lee, Samuel L. Brown, Andrew A. Bennett

Management Faculty Publications

Background

Past studies examining the health outcomes of diabetes mellitus (DM) patients found that social determinants of health disparities were associated with variabilities in health outcomes. However, improving access to healthcare, such as health insurance, should mitigate negative health outcomes. The aim of the study was to explore the association between four types of health insurance, namely, Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS), Medicare Managed Care (MC), Private FFS, and Private MC plans, and the health outcomes of DM patients, controlling for patients’ social determinants of health.

Methods

This is a retrospective cross-sectional archival record study to explore the relationships between types of …

Using The Seips Framework To Understand Systems-Level Factors Affecting Obstetric Nurse Decision Making: A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Study, Samantha Bernstein

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The United States has the worst maternal morbidity and mortality in the developed world, with a maternal death rate of 17.3/100,000 live births. Efforts to improve this have not been fruitful. This dissertation suggests that future research with a patient safety focus and human factors framework may improve our understanding of this multifactorial problem and identify new potential solutions for improving this devastating crisis. The first manuscript is a scoping review discussing the use of trigger tools to identify women in labor in need of care escalation. The second manuscript is a realist review describing current approaches to the problem …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

SARS-CoV-2 infections are characterized by viral proliferation and clearance phases and can be followed by low-level persistent viral RNA shedding. The dynamics of viral RNA concentration, particularly in the early stages of infection, can inform clinical measures and interventions such as test-based screening. We used prospective longitudinal quantitative reverse transcription PCR testing to measure the viral RNA trajectories for 68 individuals during the resumption of the 2019-2020 National Basketball Association season. For 46 individuals with acute infections, we inferred the peak viral concentration and the duration of the viral proliferation and clearance phases. According to our mathematical model, we found …

U.S. Government And Politics In Principle And Practice: Democracy, Rights, Freedoms And Empire, Samuel Finesurrey, Gary Greaves

Open Educational Resources

This book is written for students early in college to provide a guide to the founding documents and structures of governance that form the United States political system. This book is called American Government and Politics in Principle and Practice because you will notice that what has been inscribed in law has not always been applied in practice-particularly for indigenous peoples, enslaved peoples, people of color, women, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, those formerly incarcerated, immigrants and the working class within U.S. society. In designing this book, we have two goals. First, we want you to know what the founding documents …

This paper uses an application of the Bertrand model to explain the relationship between HFCS deliveries and the prices of HFCS-42 and sugar. It finds that the HFCS deliveries and the prices of HFCS-42 and refined sugar are cointegrated over the period 1994:q1-2020:q1. The main results, based on the estimated long-run elasticities, show that a one percent increase in the price of HFCS-42 decreases HFCS deliveries by 0.153 percent. One implication of this result is that it would be helpful for the HFCS industry to prevent large increases in the HFCS price, which would prevent large decreases in HFCS deliveries …

Wills Formalities In Post-Pandemic World: A Research Agenda, Bridget J. Crawford, Kelly Purser, Tina Cockburn

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 global pandemic has brought new focus to human mortality. The virus has reminded many people that they need to have a valid will or otherwise make plans for the effective transmission of their property on death. Yet stay-at-home orders and social distancing recommendations make it difficult or impossible to comply with the traditional rules for validly executing wills. Across most common law jurisdictions, the traditional requirements call for two witnesses in the physical presence of the testator. Because of the practical difficulties of safely executing documents during the pandemic with witnesses assembled in physical proximity, many jurisdictions internationally …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Industrial Heritage Museums and Organizations (IHMOs) in the United States (US) and their volunteers are underrepresented in the literature on volunteerism. The motivation and demographics of volunteers in IHMOs within the US are examined in this paper. Research into this topic is exploratory and little is known, therefore any hypothesis was based on personal observations as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in a variety of US museums. An online survey was sent out to three hundred and eighty-five museums across the US, along with conducting twelve in-person or over-the-phone interviews with museum practitioners and volunteers. This research found that a majority …
