The Whole Language Movement : Its Hindrances In The United States And Successes In Australia, Amy K. Aufmann Jan 1991

The Whole Language Movement : Its Hindrances In The United States And Successes In Australia, Amy K. Aufmann

Honors Capstones

Reading instruction in the United States has been dominated by phonics instruction for generations and has not been effective in creating a totally literate nation. With the identification of the need to formulate a new instructional methodology to rectify this situation, the whole language philosophy was created. However, only a small fraction of U.S. teachers implement this philosophy today, largely because the whole language movement has been stifled by several factors of the U.S. educational system. By contrast, however, whole language has developed in Australia in recent years as in the U.S., yet the majority of Australian teachers have successfully …

The Development Of The Equal Treatment Principle In The International Debt Crisis, Carsten Thomas Ebenroth, Rüdiger Woggon Jan 1991

The Development Of The Equal Treatment Principle In The International Debt Crisis, Carsten Thomas Ebenroth, Rüdiger Woggon

Michigan Journal of International Law

Since the outbreak of the international debt crisis at the beginning of the 1980s, debtor countries have reached a series of agreements with private creditor banks, with the aim of reducing the financial strain on the debtor countries and enabling them to service their debts. Long-term extensions of maturities are a central aspect of many of these arrangements. Included in the restructurings are all the medium- and long-term claims of the creditor banks, often short-term trade credits and interbank lines, and, in individual cases such as the restructuring of the debts of Poland, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, and some African States, …

Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, Gunnar Lagergren Oct 1990

Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, Gunnar Lagergren

Dalhousie Law Journal

On 1 July 1981, at the Peace Palace in The Hague, I had the privilege of declaring open the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, which had been constituted in accordance with the Declarations made by the Government of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria, on 19 January 1981, and adhered to by Iran and the United States of America. As I observed at that time, two great nations had, by agreeing to peaceful settlement of their differences through arbitration, brought to an end a crisis of unique complexity which might well have become a threat to world peace.

The Evolution And Implementation Of Eisenhower's "New Look" Foreign Policy: Guatemala, Jonathan Joseph York Jul 1990

The Evolution And Implementation Of Eisenhower's "New Look" Foreign Policy: Guatemala, Jonathan Joseph York

History Theses & Dissertations

In 1954, a United States assisted coup ousted the freely elected Jacobo Arbenz Guatemalan government. The Eisenhower administration took action because it believed the Guatemalan government was influenced by a communist movement directed from Moscow. Eisenhower's "New Look" foreign policy, a continuation of the containment theory, utilized and revitalized the inner core of the Executive Branch to achieve its objective of eliminating the communist menace emanating from Guatemala. The strategy that supported Eisenhower's policy was successful largely due to conducive political and public opinion in the United States and instability within Guatemala. The "New Look" strategy incorporated use of diplomatic …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).

The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

Signs Of Culture: Deafness In Nineteenth-Century America, Rebecca A. Rourke '90 May 1990

Signs Of Culture: Deafness In Nineteenth-Century America, Rebecca A. Rourke '90

Fenwick Scholar Program

While there is an abundance of research on twentieth-century manifestations of Deaf culture, the nineteenth-century roots have been largely overlooked. The creation of residential schools for the deaf gave the Deaf population a place to meet and share ideas, for the first time in American history. The close and sustained contact generated cultural development. This thesis addresses the development of a cultural identity among the Deaf population by attempting to compare the experiences and opinions of the Deaf and hearing communities as they existed in nineteenth-century America.

Predicting Attrition For Women At West Point : Is It A Function Of Adopting The Male Dominant Culture?, Jane P. Mckeon Apr 1990

Predicting Attrition For Women At West Point : Is It A Function Of Adopting The Male Dominant Culture?, Jane P. Mckeon

Master's Theses

This study examined 40 selected items from the Student Information Form that had been identified as representing cultural differences between men and women at the United States Military Academy. A principal components analysis of the data collected from 3005 male and 314 female cadets yielded 7 factors for men and 6 factors for women suitable for interpretation. As hypothesized, men and women were found to have similar cultual values, attitudes and experiences based on their similar factor structures. Next, item responses from 58 women attriters were compared to responses from the nonattriters. Using all the factors identified for the women, …

In January 1988, scientists from over 25 organizations in 13 countries and territories cooperated in the largest Global Positioning System (GPS) campaign in the world to date (Table 1). 43 GPS receivers collected approximately 590 station-days of data in America, Samoa, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Sweden, United States, West Germany, and Venezuela. The experiment was entitled CASA UNO, an acronym for Central and South America -- and uno is the Spanish word for one, designating first epoch measurements. The CASA UNO experiment was the first civilian effort implementing a global GPS satellite tracking network. …

Human Rights V. Extradition: The Soering Case, Stephan Breitenmoser, Gunter E. Wilms

Michigan Journal of International Law

The European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms is widely regarded as the most dynamic and effective of the various international human rights instruments. Its impact on the judiciary of the twenty-three Western European Member States, as well as its pace-setting role for other international mechanisms for the protection of human rights, has recently been confirmed by the unanimous judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Soering v. United Kingdom. In its judgment delivered on July 7, 1989, the Court held that the United Kingdom would act in violation of article 3 of …

The Structural Impediments Initiative: An Example Of Bilateral Trade Negotiation, Mitsuo Matsushita Jan 1990

The Structural Impediments Initiative: An Example Of Bilateral Trade Negotiation, Mitsuo Matsushita

Michigan Journal of International Law

In June 1990, the governments of the United States and Japan concluded the Structural Impediments Initiative ("SII"), a series of bilateral trade negotiations. The SII came about as a result of a large trade imbalance between the two countries in favor of Japan, which, despite many efforts, the United States and Japan had been unable to reduce. It was the U.S. government's perception that the real cause of the trade imbalance was not Japan's protective border measures in the form of tariffs or quantitative restrictions, such as import quotas on agricultural and leather products, but rather the oligopolistic industrial sector …

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii Jan 1990

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii

Master's Theses

Deregulation of the financial services industry has created a need for management to adapt a different approach to operations. Drastic regulatory and environmental changes have forced thrifts and banks to concentrate on increasing efficiency and core profitability from the retail branch network. Once considered to be highly bureaucratic, financial institutions are trimming back off ice review and focusing on a more decentralized leaner operation. Expensive mergers and large conglomerate financial powerhouses have created a need for increased management controls and reasonable methods of measuring the true profitability of the individual business units within a financial services company.

All Work: An Evaluation Of Worker's Attitudes, Worker's Behavior And Productivity In The U.S. Automobile Industry, Todd M.R. Baker

Honors Papers

The American automobile industry has become extremely sensitive to the increased number of Japanese cars and plants in the United States. Some parties believe that in order to operate competitively in the future labor and management must continue to find ways to work together and improve relations. Irving Bluestone, a former labor leader, believes that humanistic relations between the two parties are essential to the welfare of everyone involved. Joint efforts between the workers and management need to be continued and expanded. Both sides can benefit from such cooperation.

Japan, Sii And The International Harmonization Of Domestic Economic Practices, Gary R. Saxonhouse Jan 1990

Japan, Sii And The International Harmonization Of Domestic Economic Practices, Gary R. Saxonhouse

Michigan Journal of International Law

The Structural Impediments Initiative ("SII") discussions, the first stage of which concluded with a report on June 28 of last year, have been heralded as a new departure in international economic relations. Instead of talking about the removal of barriers at national borders, the United States and Japan have been discussing the relationship between international trade, international payments balances and domestic economic institutions. Trade negotiators have been exploring whether the harmonization of domestic economic institutions can allow for more intimate as well as more balanced economic relations between the United States and Japan. Concern with the international harmonization of institutions …
