Wooing The Hispanic: A Study Of Marketing Communication Strategies Targeting The United States Hispanic Market, Olga I Delgado Jan 1995

Wooing The Hispanic: A Study Of Marketing Communication Strategies Targeting The United States Hispanic Market, Olga I Delgado

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Case studies of three national corporations examine their successful U.S. Hispanic marketing communication strategies. They are Ford Motor Company, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Incorporated, and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Similarities of strategies are an emphasis on community relations, reliance on Spanish-language messages, and a geographic concentration in the largest Hispanic markets. Differences are media mix and advertising style. Ford and Anheuser-Busch strive to meet regional needs and focus on electronic media. Metropolitan Life uses a general approach and emphasizes print media. Important trends for U.S. Hispanic marketing are the growing homogenization of Hispanic groups which permitted the introduction of pan-Hispanic strategies and …

International Arbitration And Procedures To Enforce Awards In The Relationship Between The United States And Germany, Michael Kronenburg Jan 1995

International Arbitration And Procedures To Enforce Awards In The Relationship Between The United States And Germany, Michael Kronenburg

LLM Theses and Essays

Arbitration has long been regarded as a process that combines finality of decision with speed, low expense, and flexibility in solving problems. For these reasons, arbitration is often favored over litigation for dispute resolution. Particularly in international cases, a businessman may avoid litigation in a foreign country for various reasons: he may be unfamiliar with the proceedings; he may be afraid to find a “forum hostile” because of the different legal and cultural background of the judges; and he may wish to avoid the uncertainty concerning the law arising from the contract. Arbitration proceedings have been held constitutional by the …

"An Active And Energetic Bishop": The Appointment Of Joseph Glass, C.M., As Bishop Of Salt Lake City, Stafford Poole C.M. Oct 1994

"An Active And Energetic Bishop": The Appointment Of Joseph Glass, C.M., As Bishop Of Salt Lake City, Stafford Poole C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincentian Joseph Glass was the bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1915 to 1926. He was appointed because he was considered “vigorous and competent,” and the diocese desperately needed that kind of leadership. His appointment was also due to the influence of Bishop Thomas Conaty of Los Angeles and the fact that Archbishop Patrick Riordan of San Francisco died “at a crucial point in the search” for a bishop for Salt Lake. Controversy during Glass’s career prior to his elevation, the problems of the diocese of Salt Lake, and the troubles surrounding other proposed successors to the bishopric are …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 1994

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

This is the first of two studies on Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana. “The Ecclesiastical Seminary of Saint Vincent of Paul,” located in Bayou LaFourche, opened in November 1838 after about a decade of discussion. The Vincentians had initially refused to direct it because of the financial burden it would place on them and because of possible disruption to their existing seminary at the Barrens in Perryville, Missouri. However, John Timon accepted it because educating candidates for the priesthood was a Vincentian work. The circumstances of the seminary’s founding are recounted in detail. The seminary’s life, curriculum, faculty, and finances are …

The African Independence Movement And United States Foreign Policy, 1945-1960, Vera Mclauchlin Wyche Jul 1994

The African Independence Movement And United States Foreign Policy, 1945-1960, Vera Mclauchlin Wyche

History Theses & Dissertations

Throughout the Cold War, the United states and the soviet Union competed for the allegiance of the uncommitted areas of the world. Many of these areas, such as the newly emerging states of Africa sought independence from their colonial masters, some of whom were America's major allies. Yet the United States advocated only a gradual transition to independence lest the new states fall prey to instability and communist penetration.

This study examines the early cold war attempts of the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations to fashion a policy toward Africa which would please Europeans and Africans alike while preventing the growth …

Local Autonomy, Educational Equity, And School Choice: Constitutional Criticism Of School Reform, James J. Hilton Jun 1994

Local Autonomy, Educational Equity, And School Choice: Constitutional Criticism Of School Reform, James J. Hilton

New England Journal of Public Policy

Many critics of America's public education system hail parental or school choice, a program that allows public school systems to compete against one another and, under some proposals, against private educational institutions, for students and educational funding, as the answer to Americas educational crisis. Proponents argue that competition will force public schools to offer students a quality education or close. This article does not evaluate the claims of the parental-choice proposals; rather, it examines the difficulties inherent in funding such a system through traditional school finance mechanisms.

Democratic Civic Education: Preparing The Students Of Today For The Society Of The Future, Andrew Carlson May 1994

Democratic Civic Education: Preparing The Students Of Today For The Society Of The Future, Andrew Carlson

Senior Scholar Papers

"Democratic Civic Education: Preparing the Students of Today for the Society of the Future" investigates a way in which the traditional education system can be structured to address the need for, and benefit to be gained from, helping students to understand the commonality of human experience. It argues that by encouraging students to examine and challenge beliefs, ideals, and power structures, institutions of education can provide individuals with a better critical understanding of their own experiences in relationship to the community. Finally, this paper discusses the role education plays in identifying and developing the give-and-take relationship that exists between individuals …

Summer Leadership Seminar, Matthew Whitbeck Apr 1994

Summer Leadership Seminar, Matthew Whitbeck

Honors Theses

The leadership program for rising seniors in the Hanover School District is, at this moment, tentative. The project itself is a joint program between Hanover County School District and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. ... The program has three parts; one, a summer leadership seminar preceding the senior school year; two, a senior project during the school year; and three, a mentorship program during the senior school year. It is hoped that the students will receive an experience that will stress the importance of moral courage, empathy for diverse opinions, and an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship. While …

Labor Adjustment Under Different Institutional Structures: A Case Study Of Germany And The United States, Susan N. Houseman, Katharine G. Abraham Apr 1994

Labor Adjustment Under Different Institutional Structures: A Case Study Of Germany And The United States, Susan N. Houseman, Katharine G. Abraham

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Like most Western European countries, Germany stringently regulates dismissals and layoffs. Critics contend that this regulation raises the costs of employment adjustment and hence impedes employers' ability to respond to fluctuations in demand. Other German labor policies, however, most especially the availability of unemployment insurance benefits for those on short time, facilitate the adjustment of average hours per worker in lieu of layoffs. Building on earlier work, we compare the adjustment of employment, hours and inventories to demand shocks in the German and U.S. manufacturing sectors. We find that, in the short run, whereas U.S. employers rely principally on the …

Revisionist Zionism In America: The Campaign To Win American Public Support, 1939-1948, Joanna Maura Saidel Jan 1994

Revisionist Zionism In America: The Campaign To Win American Public Support, 1939-1948, Joanna Maura Saidel

Doctoral Dissertations

Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, followers of the Zionist Revisionists went to the United States at the urging of their leader, Vladimir Jabotinsky. They established two groups which initially attempted to gain public support for the creation of a Jewish Army.

The New Zionist Organization of America, headed by Ben Zion Netanyahu, followed the Revisionist political party. Its campaign exposed the anti-Jewish position of the British in Palestine. It was effective in placing the Palestine problem on the world (rather than regional) agenda of the State Department.

The Irgun Delegation to the United States, headed by Hillel …
