Comparing Newspaper Coverage Of Climate Change During Election Campaigns In The United States, Canada And Australia, Dan Rowe Dec 2011

Comparing Newspaper Coverage Of Climate Change During Election Campaigns In The United States, Canada And Australia, Dan Rowe

Mass Communications - Dissertations

This study compares newspaper coverage of climate change and global warming during the national elections in Australia, Canada and the U.S. during 2007 and 2008. Using a census of newspaper coverage and in-depth interviews with reporters, editors and columnists in the three countries, the study confirmed the findings of earlier studies that the political agenda shapes the news agenda when it comes to climate change coverage. However, the study did find that coverage of general climate change stories continued during the election campaign periods in the three countries. Reporters who cover either politics or environmental issues or both found it …

Scotts Bluff National Monument Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring, 2011 Annual Report, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke, Michael R. Bynum, Tim Shepherd, Stephen K. Wilson, Kara Paintner-Green

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) was established to develop and provide scientifically credible information on the current status and long-term trends of the composition, structure, and function of ecosystems in thirteen parks located in five northern Great Plains states. NGPN identified upland plant communities, exotic plant early detection, and riparian lowland communities as vital signs that can be used to better understand the condition of terrestrial park ecosystems (Gitzen et al. 2010). Upland and riparian ecosystems are important targets for vegetation monitoring because the status and trends in plant communities provide critical insights into …

Using International Human Rights Law To Combat Racial Discrimination In The U.S. Criminal Justice System., Terrence Rogers Dec 2011

Using International Human Rights Law To Combat Racial Discrimination In The U.S. Criminal Justice System., Terrence Rogers

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Statistics tend to show Black people commit most of the crime in the United States. Those statistics fail to account for unequal treatment of minorities at each stage of the criminal justice system. This unequal treatment may take the form of buy-and-bust operations, racial profiling, street sweeps, and other police activities which target people in low-income communities populated mainly by minorities. The American criminal justice system contains a cyclical, self-perpetuating aspect to the treatment of certain minorities. These perceptions direct a disproportionate amount of law enforcement attention on minorities, which leads to disproportionate arrests of minorities. The result shows racial …

Buffered Memory: A Hypothesis For The Maintenance Of Functional, Virus-Specific Cd8(+) T Cells During Cytomegalovirus Infection., Christopher M Snyder Dec 2011

Buffered Memory: A Hypothesis For The Maintenance Of Functional, Virus-Specific Cd8(+) T Cells During Cytomegalovirus Infection., Christopher M Snyder

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Chronic infections have been a major topic of investigation in recent years, but the mechanisms that dictate whether or not a pathogen is successfully controlled are incompletely understood. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpesvirus that establishes a persistent infection in the majority of people in the world. Like other herpesviruses, CMV is well controlled by an effective immune response and induces little, if any, pathology in healthy individuals. However, controlling CMV requires continuous immune surveillance, and thus, CMV is a significant cause of morbidity and death in immune-compromised individuals. T cells in particular play an important role in controlling CMV and …

The Impact Of Age, Education, Political Knowledge And Political Context On Voter Turnout, Roy Edward Snyder Iii

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The following study will present an examination of factors that impact levels of voting activity among American citizens from 1972 through 2004. The subject of voter turnout has been thoroughly examined by political scientists over the years, as have aspects of youth voting and the influence of education. Many of the same variables presented by scholars in recent years will be employed in this study. However, these earlier studies tend to look only at individual level variables in explaining voter turnout. This study will contribute to a more complete understanding of voting through the analysis of individual, regional, and temporal …

Army Transformation: What Does It Mean?, David Jerome Dec 2011

Army Transformation: What Does It Mean?, David Jerome

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The way in which senior U.S. Army leaders such as the chiefs of staff define transformative change is important, especially if the meaning of that term is to be interpreted as originally intended by Army field grade officers. An Army chief of staff is responsible for creating a vision and establishing goals for the future, and field grade officers are responsible for pursuing that vision and those goals by implementing objectives that endeavor to arrive at the desired ends. By using both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research analyzes what each of the three chiefs of staff, who have served …

Delusional Misidentification Syndromes, Zeljko Jocic, M.D. Nov 2011

Delusional Misidentification Syndromes, Zeljko Jocic, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Delusional misidentification syndromes are reviewed by their phenomenology, epidemiology, clinical characteristics, associated clinical findings, etiological theories, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment. Related neuropsychiatric syndromes are described and distinctions between them and delusional misidentification syndromes addressed. Current psychological and biologic-cognitive theories are briefly discussed. These peculiar phenomena are probably more frequent than previously thought, if they are specifically sought and recognized. Organic factors play a definitive role in their occurrence and two brain regions frontal and temporal, are presumably dysfunctional.

In this paper, the author presents a case and discusses the role of the consultant in (1) diagnostics, (2) therapeutics, (3) assessment of involuntary vs. voluntary placement in an institution, (4) medical staff education, (5) family education, and (6) the management of evoked feelings and countertransference among the medical and nursing staff.

The Management Of Performance Anxiety With Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Agents, James A. Bourgeois, M.D. Nov 2011

The Management Of Performance Anxiety With Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Agents, James A. Bourgeois, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Performance anxiety consists of several symptoms experienced in the context of public performance and is classified in DSM-III-R under social phobia. Performance anxiety must be distinguished from panic disorder, generalized social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder. Performance anxiety symptoms can be detrimental to both performer and performance. These symptoms can be controlled by the judicious use of beta-adrenergic blocking agents. The use of beta-adrenergic blocking agents should be considered as part of a psychiatric stress-management program for these patients.

The countertransference implications are especially explored as well as indications for supervision.

A Survey Of Selected Neurological Signs In Schizophrenia Research, Emanuel H. Rosen, M.D. Nov 2011

A Survey Of Selected Neurological Signs In Schizophrenia Research, Emanuel H. Rosen, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

This review covers three areas of schizophrenia research not usually addressed in residents' curricula: smooth pursuit eye movements and genetics, orienting responses, and tardive dyskinesia. The significance of these neurological signs is explored in terms of their clinical symptom associations and their heuristic value. Neuroanatomical aspects of these signs is noted to be speculatively consistent with hypofrontality and negative symptoms in schieophrenia. The author describes the nature of occulomotor abnormalities and discusses an applicable research study. He summarizes relevant areas of genetic research including linkage analysis and marker studies and explains some of the orienting response abnormalities in schizophrenia. He …

Cognitive Information Processing In Borderline Personality Disorder: A Neuropsychiatric Hypothesis, J.Wesley Burgess, Ph.D., M.D. Nov 2011

Cognitive Information Processing In Borderline Personality Disorder: A Neuropsychiatric Hypothesis, J.Wesley Burgess, Ph.D., M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Neurocognitive information processing was compared in 18 borderline subjects and 14 controls of similar age and gender. An 11-item screening examination significantly differentiated the two groups (P < 0.001). Significant differences were found on Delayed Memory, Serial Sevens, Rhythm Reproduction, and Perseveration subtests (P < 0.05). The results are interpreted as evidence for mild frontotemporal brain deficits. The findings support a developmental model of borderline disorder where early stress/injury during the childhood period of frontotemporal vulnerability results in failure to negotiate developmental landmarks and adult deficits in cognition, emotion/behavior modulation, and insight.

This discussion, therefore, intends to shed light on the US sports gaming legal framework, including analysis of the preeminent US laws that regulate the sports gaming industry and a brief review of various sports gaming businesses that fall within the US legal rubric.

The Mechanics Of Federal Appeals: Uniformity And Case Management In The Circuit Courts, Marin K. Levy Nov 2011

The Mechanics Of Federal Appeals: Uniformity And Case Management In The Circuit Courts, Marin K. Levy

Duke Law Journal

Case-management practices of appellate courts define the judicial review of appeals. The circuit courts constantly make decisions about which cases will receive oral argument, which will have dispositions written by staff attorneys in lieu of judges, and which will result in unpublished opinions—decisions that exert a powerful influence on the quality of justice that can be obtained from the federal appellate courts. Despite their importance, there has been no in-depth review of the case-management practices of the different circuit courts in the academic literature.

This Article begins to fill that void. It first documents and analyzes the practices of five …

Psychiatrists' Knowledge And Attitudes About The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Carol L. Alter, M.D., Ellen S. Dickinson, M.D., Greg Miller, M.D. Oct 2011

Psychiatrists' Knowledge And Attitudes About The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Carol L. Alter, M.D., Ellen S. Dickinson, M.D., Greg Miller, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Since 1981 the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has become the primary health care issue in this nation. Psychiatrists have had a central role in caring for AIDS patients: they have been asked to evaluate and treat patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations of AIDS and emotional reactions to the illness itself, as well as to treat those who are fearful of acquiring AIDS. Numerous studies in the literature have explored the physician and lay population's knowledge and attitudes about AIDS. To date no study has addressed these issues in psychiatrists in specific (1- 9).

Most studies suggest that individuals who have …

Telephone Associated Pathology: Clinical Case Studies And Discussion, Mark Servis, M.D. Oct 2011

Telephone Associated Pathology: Clinical Case Studies And Discussion, Mark Servis, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The advancement of modern technology shapes and develops new expressions of psychopathology and accompanying treatments. This is most apparent with the telephone, an instrument of contact and communication for the patient, and assessment and intervention for the therapist. The telephone both constrains and creates unique constellations of patient symptomatology. This paper will examine one such telephone symptom complex-the habitual over use of the telephone by non-bipolar patients. The frequent monopolization of the phone seen in some bipolar patients will not be considered, though the elements of intrusion and aggression discussed in this paper are probably shared by manic patients.

What Supports Supportive Therapy?, Peter N. Novalis, M.D., Ph.D. Oct 2011

What Supports Supportive Therapy?, Peter N. Novalis, M.D., Ph.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Think of 1896, the year Jacob Freud died, kindling a depression in his son Sigmund which led to The Interpretation of Dreams. To a raucous convention in Chicago, William Jennings Bryan declaimed against the gold monetary standard: "You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold" (I). Years later the monetary gold standard was abandoned during the New Deal, but Freud's newly mined "pure gold of analysis" continued to be an object of adulation and emulation, despite Freud's prediction that its …
