The Large Civil Aircraft Industry: Applying Legal Policy-Making Tools To Accommodate A Changing Industry, Dennis G. Terez Jan 1984

The Large Civil Aircraft Industry: Applying Legal Policy-Making Tools To Accommodate A Changing Industry, Dennis G. Terez

Michigan Journal of International Law

This note first examines the emergence of Airbus Industrie (Al or Airbus) and identifies some of the legal and policy instruments which the European governments have employed to make Al a successful competitor. After a brief discussion of the growing difficulties with subsidy policies, the note considers European Community legislation for a common European industrial policy and the creation of a European Export Bank as possible alternative solutions for maintaining Al's competitiveness. The note finally argues that international industrial agreements are necessary legal tools for effective regulation of the manufacture and sale of large civil aircraft. International agreements currently in …

A Civil Tongue, Edwin Newman Jan 1984

A Civil Tongue, Edwin Newman

Sacred Heart University Review

Edwin Newman speaks about language. We have no hope of dealing with our problems except by chance unless we understand them, and we cannot understand them or one another unless we dig ourselves out from the jargon, the mush, the smog, the dull, pompous, boneless, gassy language under which we Americans have been burying ourselves. That may not seem to be as dramatic a challenge as some others that face the country. It may be thought not to be something by which a nation lives or dies, but in the long run, it is as pressing as any, and in …

A Range Extension For Manayunkia Aestuarina (Bourne, 1883) (Polychaeta: Sabellidae) To The Gulf Coast Of The United States With A Review Of Previous Habitat Information, T. Dale Bishop

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The sabellid polychaete Manayunkia aestuarina (Bourne, 1883) is reported for the first time from the Gulf coast of the United States and from a Juncus roemerianus marsh. Individuals were collected from a brackish J. roemerianus marsh in St. Louis Bay, Mississippi, (30o22'N, 89o15'W) during the period of June 1979 to May 1980. Adults with eggs were first noted in early January and increased in number through May. Brooded young were observed from late January through May. Habitat comparisons are made between this and other North American and European populations. The present population is associated with lower …

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 4, Joseph Rosati C.M. Oct 1983

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 4, Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Continued from the first three issues, Joseph Rosati’s translated memoirs relate the early days of Saint Mary’s Seminary of the Barrens and the Vincentians’ service to the nearby Catholic community. Covering the period between their arrival in Perryville in October 1818 and his appointment as visitor in 1820, Rosati describes hardships, triumphs, and people in detail. In this excerpt, the Congregation grows with the arrival of Italians who join it after being unable to form their own community.

An Arms Race In Outer Space Between The United States And The Soviet Union Implications For U.S. Foreign Policy, Gary Morgan Jensen Aug 1983

An Arms Race In Outer Space Between The United States And The Soviet Union Implications For U.S. Foreign Policy, Gary Morgan Jensen

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The development of an operational anti-satellite capability by the Soviet Union, and the corresponding U.S. effort to develop an anti-satellite capability of its own, are gradually propelling both nations into a space arms race. The militarization of outer space moves forward as both superpowers launch an increasing number of satellites on military missions. This emerging space race has important foreign policy implications for the United States. Will the two superpowers move in the direction of increased competition and possible confrontation in outer space, or will they agree to the need for some kind of achievable space arms control agreement? The …

The Rhetorical Factors Applied To The Reorientation Of American Public Opinion Toward The Soviet Union Immediately After June 22, 1941, Stanley Paul Berry Apr 1983

The Rhetorical Factors Applied To The Reorientation Of American Public Opinion Toward The Soviet Union Immediately After June 22, 1941, Stanley Paul Berry

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis asks the question: what rhetorical factors were applied to the reorientation of American public opinion toward the Soviet Union immediately after June 22, 1941. A brief review of American diplomatic trends leading to June 22, 1941 is provided. The term rhetoric is operationally defined and the limits establishing causation between persuasion and opinion are delineated. The national communication process is explained and a national opinion profile, as it existed in the spring of 1941, is described. Initial persuasive responses to the Russo-German war are addressed and analyzed. The primary persuasive goals are identified as improving the public's image …

A Comparative Study Of British Barristers And American Legal Practice And Education, Marilyn J. Berger Jan 1983

A Comparative Study Of British Barristers And American Legal Practice And Education, Marilyn J. Berger

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The conduct of a trial in England is undeniably an impressive undertaking. Costume alone transports the viewer to Elizabethan times. Counsel and judges, bewigged and gowned, appear in a cloistered, regal setting, strewn with leather-bound books. Brightly colored ribbons of red, green, yellow and white, rather than metal clips and staples fasten the legal papers. After comparison with the volatile atmosphere and often unruly conduct of a trial in a United States courtroom it is natural to assume that the British model of courtroom advocacy provides an instructive model for its American counterpart.

Jurisdictional Bases For Criminal Legislation And Its Enforcement, B.J. George Jr. Jan 1983

Jurisdictional Bases For Criminal Legislation And Its Enforcement, B.J. George Jr.

Michigan Journal of International Law

The doctrine of jurisdiction-the authority of nations or states to create or prescribe penal or regulatory norms and to enforce them through administrative and judicial action- has been a source of difficulty in both international and domestic law for centuries. The last two decades, however, have witnessed more conflicts over the invocation of forum penal laws to reach persons and activities outside national boundaries than had arisen for more than a century before. Moreover, treaties restricting some dimensions of penal jurisdiction based on other than the territorial concept have become increasingly common, and some nations have legislated to prevent their …

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart Jan 1983

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart

Theses

The Quality Control Circle attempts to solve management and production problems using a participative management style. This study represents an analysis of how the Quality Control Circle emerged in Japan and efforts in the U. S. to Americanize the concept. It is important to note that participative management represents a single management style. This style is not recommended for every organization. Organizations must select the appropriate management style to accomplish conceived goals and the style must fit within their particular corporate culture. The Quality Control Circle is an outgrowth of participative management and is not-all inclusive of participative management ideals.

The United States And Naval Limitation: From The Washington Conference To Pearl Harbor, David Jonas Murphy Jan 1983

The United States And Naval Limitation: From The Washington Conference To Pearl Harbor, David Jonas Murphy

Honors Papers

In conducting their foreign affairs, nations rarely act for purely altruistic reasons. Often, when their stated objectives are noble ones- such as world peace- one can find others which stem from the perceived needs of the individual nation or nations. The United States has not been an exception to this rule. Between World War I and World War II the foreign policy of the United States had as one of its major goals world peace or, failing world peace, peace for the United States. Naturally, this was not a totally altruistic ideal. It was believed that the United States would …

An Appraisal: George S. Messersmith On The Relationship Between The United States And Germany 1933-1934, Donald C. Philips Jan 1983

An Appraisal: George S. Messersmith On The Relationship Between The United States And Germany 1933-1934, Donald C. Philips

Honors Papers

On a day to day basis, Messersmith was considered to be the State Department's most reliable and informed observer. He was able to establish contacts with a number of high ranking Nazi officials and he used these contacts to substantiate his reports. Messersmith commented on almost every aspect of German life and these comments were read by most American policymakers, including Roosevelt. His reports were considered particularly valuable by two State Department officials, William Phillips and J. Pierrepont Moffat, who both worked in the Western European Division.

Some of Messersmith's analysis is skewed and, sometimes, incorrect. There were two faults …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler Jan 1983

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

The Problems In Research Within Juvenile Corrections, Laura Egerton Jan 1982

The Problems In Research Within Juvenile Corrections, Laura Egerton

Honors Theses

The research included in this evaluation had to meet two criteria. First, it had to be indexed in the 1980 or 1981 Sociological Abstracts of Social Source Citation Index. The research must also have been conducted in a correctional institution or in a diversion program. A diversion program is a community-based therapy program dealing primarily with status and first offenders. The goals of the program vary, but focus primarily on prevention of delinquency through early intervention. Of the over one hundred articles reviewed, only thirty met the criteria. The studies not included focused primarily upon either delinquents on probation or …
