A Different Face Of Faith-Based Politics: Social Capital And Community Organizing In The Public Arena, Richard L. Wood, Mark R. Warren
A Different Face Of Faith-Based Politics: Social Capital And Community Organizing In The Public Arena, Richard L. Wood, Mark R. Warren
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
The role of religion in American politics and civil society has drawn significant scholarly focus, but most of the recent attention has fallen on the religious rights political influence and, more recently, on new initiatives to broaden the channeling of social service funding through faith- based organizations. These are important issues, but they exclude another historically important face of religiously-grounded public engagement: religious pressure for deeper political and economic democracy. We examine a widespread contemporary aspect of such engagement, faith-based community organizing (FBCO), through which poor and middle-income religious congregations advance the interests of their members. We analyze data from …

Return on investment (ROI) for healthcare marketing is a hot topic among healthcare professionals. It has been discussed off and on in the past, but recent financial developments in healthcare have brought it to the forefront. Today, because of financial pressures, all operational efforts (including marketing) are under intense scrutiny, making the bottom line more important than ever.

Differences In Perception And Number Of Incidents Of Sexual Harassment Among College Students In The United States And The Federal Republic Of Germany, Antonia Von Tobiesen
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine the difference between American and German students in perception and frequency of sexual harassment. The participants were female Old Dominion University psychology undergraduates and psychology students from the Universitaet Freiburg. A survey containing the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire {SEQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and modified questions from Gutek's (1985) Main Questionnaire (Women's Version) was used. The survey was designed to reveal sexual harassment experiences in the work environment or in the university setting, while measuring the effect of the experiences on self-esteem and the students' reactions to the incidents. The results indicated that …

Paraeducators In Education, Debbie Morrissette, Patrick J. Morrissette, Julien Richard
Essays in Education
This paper discusses the role of paraeducators within the American educational system. Although it is unknown whether paraeducators enhance the learning of children or the classroom environment, their numbers are rapidly increasing as they are perceived to be vital to the educational system. As revealed in this paper, despite exceptional growth, the practice of using paraeducators generally remains unregulated, underdeveloped, and unmethodical. It is argued that this current state of affairs leaves teachers, paraeducators, and students in a precarious situation. Important issues discussed in this paper include the (a) changing role of the classroom teacher, (b) teacher-paraeducator matching process, (c) …

An Efficiency Analysis Of Contracts For The Provision Of Telephone Services To Prisons, Justin Carver
An Efficiency Analysis Of Contracts For The Provision Of Telephone Services To Prisons, Justin Carver
Federal Communications Law Journal
As the numbers of prisons and prisoners continue to increase, so does the market for prison services. One of the more lucrative segments of this industry is the telephone market. To the extent that the services are provided to the prisoners, the relationship resembles a third party beneficiary contract, but due to the perverse financial incentives and the political climate surrounding prisons and prisoners, neither the state nor the private entity acts in the best interests of the consumers in particular or of society in general. This Article will analyze the efficiency of these contracts, introduce alternate arrangements, and compare …

Tightrope Walking: Finding The Balance Between The Military And The Media During Modern Wars, Marcie A. Young
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Access to information during national conflict is like walking a tightrope, and the military and the media are dependent on the tension to keep balance.
In times of war, the military and the media fight a battle of their own - a battle revolving around the dichotomy of secrecy and information. The military, notorious for keeping secrets, and the media, notorious for finding and reporting those secrets, are naturally in opposition.

Mobile Business As Strategic Tools In The Us Airline Industry, Marzel Stratmann
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This thesis analyzes opportunities and threats of mobile business in the context of the US airline industry as a strategic tool to create a sustainable competitive advantage through the implementation of an effective mobile business model. The analysis is based on the assumption that mobile airline strategies have to create a strategic fit with the business environment seen from an airline perspective. Forces inherent in the global environment as well as in the micro-environment are analyzed using environmental scanning as systematic technique. Exploratory data obtained from a focus group interview is added to the analysis in order to assess opportunities …

The Best Of Both Worlds – The Hybrid Program, Hope Jordan, Marcia G. Derrick, Jill Crandell, Rhiannon Schuster
Essays in Education
The special education teacher shortage in the United States is a critical issue and becoming a national crisis. Universities struggle to provide sufficient numbers of trained and licensed teachers to fill this need. These shortages are intensifying as modern universities also struggle with concepts of on-line learning and adult learning styles. The Hybrid Model developed at Regent University, incorporates the best components of the traditional classroom with those of the on-line learning environment, and provides a program resulting in the best of both worlds. This article describes one such model, its successes, and suggestions for on-going improvement.

A Comparison Of The Financial Reporting Standards Of The United States And Germany, Sarah Glymph
Honors Capstones
German companies are having difficulties translating financial statements from German accounting standards to United States Generally Accepted Accounting Standards in order to trade stock on United States stock exchanges. The German accounting standards are compared with US GAAP in ten main areas of financial statement accounting. Microsoft financial statements in both US and German accounting standards are studied as an example of the differences between the two sets of accounting standards. Two areas of accounting are found to be of significant difference. Pension and depreciation expense would have to be adjusted to follow US GAAP before German companies could translate …
