During the past five years, virtual schools in the United States have gained popularity and acceptance as viable alternatives to the traditional school system through provisions for charter schools under Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This paper describes the existing federal policies that are driving the online virtual school movement, and how one state, Nevada, has set forth and interpreted specific policies regarding online distance education. A new industry is developing in Canada due to recent studies indicating that demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply in Canada and the U.S. is on the rise. As a result, the construction stage has begun for a number of proposed LNG receiving terminals in and around Atlantic Canada. The authors provide an overview of the current issues facing these LNG projects, such as their impact on fisheries, the environment, and Aboriginal rights. Betty Ann McNeil uses the words and experiences of five Daughters of Charity to illustrate the service of the 270 sisters who nursed wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War in Union and Confederate territory. According to McNeil, the sisters “crossed boundaries of locale, politics, and religion . . . for the sake of the Vincentian mission.” This included crossing army lines. They faced great personal danger and hardship and adapted their organization to meet ever changing wartime conditions in a variety of settings, including major battlefields. “Handing on the Charism,” part of a larger oral history project, was a series of interviews conducted in 2002 and 2003 among the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, their associates, and other women the Sisters helped or influenced. The article gives this New Jersey community’s history, explains the project’s methodology, and provides long excerpts from the interview transcripts. It provides conclusions about how the Sisters’ charism is being passed down as well as recommendations for how to further include the laity in it.

This study examines the creation of the United States Information Agency (USIA) under the guidance of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and looks at the place of the Agency in the "New Look." The US Information Agency was an important "soft" tool in the American struggle with the Soviet Union for preponderant influence around the world and played a part in the American effort to maintain the balance between the Communist and Free worlds. “The Other War” describes how the patrols, supply convoys, checkpoints, raids, and arrests, which make up the daily routines of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, sometimes involve degrading and abusive treatment of Iraqi civilians. Through interviews with some of those soldiers, the article portrays the everyday tragedy of the Iraq war and demonstrates how the very policies used to “secure” the country are creating greater insecurity and sparking Iraqi resentment of the occupation. Turf Wars In Radiology: What Must Academic Radiology Do?, Vijay M. Rao, David C. Levin

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

In a previous article in this series, we called upon private practice radiology groups to better support radiology research financially, but also pointed out that academic radiology must make some changes as well. In this article, we discuss those changes in detail. They include revising the structure of the radiology residency, changing the timing of the American Board of Radiology oral examinations, requiring that all residents receive research training, and emphasizing the value of clinical and translational research. The Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) needs to assume a leadership role in implementing these changes.
