A Tale Of Two Freedmen: Comparing Black Self-Determination In Atlanta And Salvador, Caitlin Wells Apr 2009

A Tale Of Two Freedmen: Comparing Black Self-Determination In Atlanta And Salvador, Caitlin Wells

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

After emancipation, African-Americans in Atlanta, Georgia, sought self-determination through formal political means, whereas Afro-Brazilians in Salvador da Bahia pursued self-determination through cultural expression. To determine why, I have synthesized secondary sources into an original comparative narrative based in the different experiences of slavery, the different emancipation processes, and the different post-emancipation socio-political situations of each region. These contrasting histories led Afro-Brazilians in Bahia to organize much in the ways they had under slavery, whereas African Americans in Georgia were drawn into formal politics through opportunities presented under Radical Reconstruction. Unfortunately, white supremacy was quickly restored in Georgia under Redemption, leaving …

Actual Exploitation, Simulated Exploitation And A Tin Drum: A Comparative Analysis Of Child Pornography Law In The United States And Canada, Maurice "Mac" Verstandig Apr 2009

Actual Exploitation, Simulated Exploitation And A Tin Drum: A Comparative Analysis Of Child Pornography Law In The United States And Canada, Maurice "Mac" Verstandig

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

The United States and Canada two of the world's foremost modern, liberalized societies regularly combat an awkward and painful tension between free speech rights and the wellbeing of minors. Though there generally exists a consensus that child pornography represents a certain dark realm of material outside the oft-amorphous protections afforded speech, the establishment of an acceptable working definition of this criminal fodder has proven contentiously difficult. This paper explores each nation's struggles with this tension, through the lens of legislative efforts, judicial responses, and the productions that seem to perennially blur the line between art and crime. It is ultimately …

A Proposal For A Student Office For Sustainability And Awareness, Frank Michael Malatesta Apr 2009

A Proposal For A Student Office For Sustainability And Awareness, Frank Michael Malatesta

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

The environment has been neglected for too much of the history of industrialized society, Only now, after much damage has occurred, are nations beginning to support environmentally friendly policies and initiatives. Despite the effort, the need for change has not hit the all of thepopulation with a "Jolt." One of the best places to develop a sustainability mindset is at the University level. Universities must lead the example as the focal points of their respective communities and as the training grounds for the leaders of tommorrow. Currently, the University of South Florida falls short in the endeavor. The University lacks …

High Time Resolution Pfisr And Optical Observations Of Naturally Enhanced Ion Acoustic Lines, R G. Michell, K A. Lynch, C J. Heinselman, H C. Stenbaek-Nielsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Observations of naturally enhanced ion acoustic lines (NEIALs) taken with the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) using a mode with very high time resolution are presented. The auroral event took place over Poker Flat, Alaska on 8 February 2007 at 09:35 UT (∼22:00 MLT), and the radar data are complemented by common-volume high- resolution auroral imaging. The NEIALs occurred during only one of the standard 15-s integration periods. The raw data of this time show very intermittent NEIALs which oc- cur only during a few very short time intervals (≤1 s) within the 15-s period. The time sampling of …

A Tale Of Two Maps: The Limits Of Universalism In Comparative Judicial Review, Adam M. Dodek Apr 2009

A Tale Of Two Maps: The Limits Of Universalism In Comparative Judicial Review, Adam M. Dodek

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

For most of the twentieth century, the dominant paradigm in comparative public law was particularism. This was accompanied by a strong skepticism towards universalist features and possibilities in public law and, especially, constitutional law. With the rise of judicial review after World War I--and especially in Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union--comparative judicial review has begun to flourish. However, comparative scholarship on judicial review overemphasizes the centrality of "the question of legitimacy" of judicial review in a democratic polity. This has been a result of the mistaken extrapolation of the American debate over judicial review to other …

A Model Of Employee Satisfaction: Gender Differences In Cooperative Extension, Richard P. Vlosky, Francisco X. Aguilar

Journal of Extension

Employee satisfaction is an important issue for management and employees in any organizational setting. We developed a generalized model of employee satisfaction and tested it for both female and male U.S Extension employees. Results indicate that there are no differences in the antecedents of employee satisfaction between genders.

Obama Administration New Path To Viability For Gm & Chrysler, U. S. Department Of The Treasury Mar 2009

Obama Administration New Path To Viability For Gm & Chrysler, U. S. Department Of The Treasury

Documents

In accordance with the March 31, 2009 deadline in the U.S. Treasury's loan agreements with General Motors and Chrysler, the Obama Administration is announcing its determination of the viability of the companies, pursuant to their February 17, 2009 submissions, and is laying out a new finite path forward for both companies to restructure and succeed. These findings and new framework for success are consistent with the President's commitment to support an American auto industry that can help revive modern manufacturing and support our nation's effort to move toward energy independence, but only in the context of a fundamental restructuring that …

Gender Equality In Reconciling Work And Childcare In South Korea, Kook Hee Lee Mar 2009

Gender Equality In Reconciling Work And Childcare In South Korea, Kook Hee Lee

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers

This paper presents an ideal legislative model for South Korea to realize gender equality in reconciling work and childcare. The comparative study on the U.S. and German system is the basis for the legislative model. This paper selects the U.S. and German systems as a comparison group because they are representing the equal treatment approach and special treatment approach in the feminist legal theory. The current system in South Korea fails to realize gender equality because it provides maternity leave exclusive to women to limit women’s right to work and lacks financial support for parental leave. Maternity leave limits women’s …
