The Power Of Fission: How The Discovery Of Fission Adversely Affected Us/Soviet Relations, Kathy Shinnick Mar 2012

The Power Of Fission: How The Discovery Of Fission Adversely Affected Us/Soviet Relations, Kathy Shinnick

Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston

In 1940 FDR told the leading Western scientists that they were not responsible for the way science was being used to perpetuate oppressive world domination. He went on to convince them that while they could not trust Hitler to use their knowledge towards positive means, they could trust the United States to forward the values of world peace.

In light of the events that followed from that speech in 1940 to the dropping of the atomic bomb in 1945, without informing the Soviet Union, this pivotal moment insights a series of questions concerning the ways in which the United States’ …

Cenozoic Tectonic Evolution Of The Central Wassuk Range, Western Nevada, Usa, Benjamin E. Surpless Mar 2012

Cenozoic Tectonic Evolution Of The Central Wassuk Range, Western Nevada, Usa, Benjamin E. Surpless

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

The central Wassuk Range of western Nevada is ideally located to investigate the interplay of Basin and Range extension and Walker Lane dextral deformation on the margin of the Basin and Range province. To elucidate the Cenozoic evolution of the range, the author conducted geologic mapping, structural data collection and analysis, geochemical analysis of igneous lithologies, and geochronology. This research delineates a three-stage deformational history for the range. A ~15 Ma pulse of ENE-WSW directed extension at high strain rates (~8.7 Ma) was immediately preceded by the eruption of andesites and was accommodated by high-angle, closely spaced (1-2 km), east-dipping …

Us Government Efforts To Repair Its Image After The 2008 Financial Crisis, Andrea A. Chua, Augustine Pang Mar 2012

Us Government Efforts To Repair Its Image After The 2008 Financial Crisis, Andrea A. Chua, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Globalization has intensified the interaction and interdependency among countries. The need to maintain good reputation and establish good relationships should dominate public diplomacy efforts (Hiebert, 2005). Using the US financial crisis 2008 as a case study, this study examines how the world's only superpower repaired its image when it was accused of triggering the financial meltdown that impacted the world economy. Few studies have examined repair strategies by nations. The need to undertake more empirical research to understand how the image-rebuilding rhetoric can aid diplomatic efforts remains relevant today.

Assessing Competition In U.S. Wireless Markets: Review Of The Fcc’S Competition Reports, Gerald R. Faulhaber, Robert W. Halm, Hal J. Singer Mar 2012

Assessing Competition In U.S. Wireless Markets: Review Of The Fcc’S Competition Reports, Gerald R. Faulhaber, Robert W. Halm, Hal J. Singer

Federal Communications Law Journal

The FCC's 14th and 15th Annual Wireless Competition reports review a wide variety of evidence, both direct (how firms and customers behave) and indirect (industry concentration measures) in making its competitive assessment. The reports are silent on how to interpret this evidence. In contrast, modem antitrust analysis relies far more on direct evidence. In failing to put more weight on the relevant direct market evidence to reach an informed competitive assessment, the 14th and 15th reports invite erroneous conclusions about the state of competition in wireless markets. The authors are concerned that these erroneous conclusions eventually could adversely influence regulatory …

Hierarchy And Heterogeneity: How To Read A Statute In A Lower Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl Mar 2012

Hierarchy And Heterogeneity: How To Read A Statute In A Lower Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl

Faculty Publications

Is statutory interpretation an activity that all courts should perform the same way? Courts and commentators implicitly so conclude. I believe that conclusion is wrong. Statutory interpretation is a court-specific activity that should differ according to the institutional circumstances of the interpreting court. The U.S. Supreme Court is not the model all other courts should emulate.

I identify three kinds of institutional differences between courts that bear on which interpretive methods are appropriate: (1) the court’s place in the hierarchical structure of appellate review, (2) the court’s technical capacity and resources, and (3) the court’s democratic pedigree, particularly as reflected …

To Certify, Or Not To Certify: A Comparison Of Australia And The U.S. In Achieving National Mediator Certification, Mandy Zhang Feb 2012

To Certify, Or Not To Certify: A Comparison Of Australia And The U.S. In Achieving National Mediator Certification, Mandy Zhang

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

This article aims to trace the progress of establishing mediation accreditation in Australia and the United States. Part II briefly describes how each country came to the decision of exploring the necessity of national mediator certification, and also illustrates the proposed designs for the Australian certification program and U.S. certification program recommended by the ACR. Part III suggests possible reasons for why the U.S. has failed to implement the mediator certification program proposed by the ACR while Australia is moving forward to establish their system. Part IV concludes with why the U.S. should continue to push for national mediator accreditation …

Mexico, U.S. Reach Landmark Agreement On Deepwater Oil Exploration, Carlos Navarro Feb 2012

Mexico, U.S. Reach Landmark Agreement On Deepwater Oil Exploration, Carlos Navarro

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

In an unprecedented act of cooperation in the energy sector, the US and Mexican governments signed an agreement establishing a framework for US energy companies to work jointly with the state run oil company PEMEX to develop oil and gas resources in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The agreement eases a dispute between Mexico and the US about ownership of reserves along a common boundary in the Gulf of Mexico, potentially opening more than 1 million acres to deepwater drilling. Mexico was extremely concerned that drilling by US companies could siphon off reserves on the Mexican side …

Selected Interprofessional Activities At The University Clinical Skills & Simulation Center, John Duffy

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Interprofessional simulation has been a mainstay of a Jefferson education for almost a decade. Since the opening of the Hamilton Building in 2007, opportunities for interprofessional simulation have grown exponentially at the University. In response to this rapid growth, an Interprofessional Simulation Curriculum Committee (ISCC) was established by Dr. Michael Vergare, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2010. Committee members include representatives from nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and pharmacy. The overarching goal of the ISCC is to promote and support the development of interprofessional education via simulation as a teaching/ learning strategy for faculty and students on …

Sixteen year-old, timid Noelle arrived on the labor floor with complaints of severe abdominal pain and headache, onset earlier today at school. During her intake, she confided to her nurse that she is probably about 7 months pregnant with no prenatal care. Only her boyfriend knew. Her parents were oblivious. Noelle was petrified to tell her mother of the pregnancy. Mom arrived on the labor floor about thirty minutes later and was shocked to discover her daughter’s condition. The physician explained the situation to Mom. Noelle was 30 weeks pregnant, hypertensive with seizures. Mom could barely comprehend her daughter’s illness, …

Revisiting Maine’S Lobster Commons: Rescaling Political Subjects, Jennifer F. Brewer Jan 2012

Revisiting Maine’S Lobster Commons: Rescaling Political Subjects, Jennifer F. Brewer

Geography

Calls for cross-scalar theoretical and methodological approaches are not new to commons scholarship. Such efforts might be hastened by channelling poststructuralist and critical theory perspectives through the geographic subfield of political ecology, including attention to political scales and subjects. Toward this end, this paper reconsiders Maine’s lobster fishery. This case has provided rich material for watershed commons scholarship, demonstrating the ability of social groups to conserve resources independent of government or markets, and it continues to offer new findings. Recent fieldwork shows that as lobster boat captains advance collective interests through state-supported co-management governance arrangements, concerns of crew and non-fishing …

An Embarrassment Of Riches: American Religious Pluralism As A Threat, Richard Grigg Jan 2012

An Embarrassment Of Riches: American Religious Pluralism As A Threat, Richard Grigg

Sacred Heart University Press Books

Religious diversity is a sign of the vitality of American spirituality, but it presents a challenge: a thoughtful believer will most likely recognize that religious Others hold beliefs that contradict his or her own and will confront the fact that there is apparently no better evidence for his or her own beliefs than for those held by the religious Other. Thus the religious Other can easily become the disconfirming Other. An Embarrassment of Riches examines the various responses open to the believer challenged by the disconfirming Other, from self-deception of New Age spirituality to rigid fundamentalist opposition.

Small businesses in China and United States generate the largest share of economic activity and employment. As the driving force behind the economic growth of both countries, Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) has fundamentally shaped the two countries. This research-in-progress paper reports the research model we conduct to analyze the factors that will affect ICTs adoption of small businesses in both countries. The purpose of the paper is to (1) report proposals of the current status of the research project (2) build an understanding of ICTs adoption in both countries (3) build the framework to explore the relationship between ICTs …

Newspapers Coverage Of Spain And The United States: A Comparative Analysis, Antonio V. Menéndez Alarcón

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This article assesses the content of foreign news coverage in the United States and Spain. It draws on content analysis of two US and two Spanish newspapers over a 28-month period, during 2005-2007 and in 2009. The results show that the content of these newspapers tends to be more negative when covering politics. However, there was a major change in the type of coverage in the Spanish newspapers from the period 2005-2007 to 2009. Coverage of US politics in 2009 was much more positive than in the previous period studied. These findings suggest that newspapers contribute to an overall unfavorable …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Sustainability: Chcs That Were Part Of A Consortia When Federal Funding Ended, Latonya B. Dunlow

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Community health centers (CHCs) serve an important role in addressing gaps in access to care experienced by millions of Americans. There have been programs in the past developed to provide funding support to increase access to care. However, when funding ends some grantees are faced with program sustainability challenges. This study sought to identify factors and advice for sustainability of programs and services once funding ends. The findings of this study are consistent with the literature; however there were two qualities of leadership important to sustainability that were not as pronounced in the literature that were found in this study-perseverance …

Symptom Intrusiveness, Chronic Conditions And Health-Related Quality Of Life: Development Of Conceptual And Measurement Models, Jill Marie Monfre Jan 2012

Symptom Intrusiveness, Chronic Conditions And Health-Related Quality Of Life: Development Of Conceptual And Measurement Models, Jill Marie Monfre

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: The number of patients in the United States living with chronic conditions is increasing as patients are surviving conditions that were previously fatal. This increase in survival has resulted in a shift in the disease burden in the United States from infectious to chronic diseases. Many patients with chronic conditions experience associated symptoms that impact their health-related quality of life more significantly than those without associated symptoms. To enable patients to achieve what they determine to be an acceptable state of wellbeing, health care providers must first be aware of the factors and the relationships among the factors that …
