The Effects Of Illegal Migration From Mexico To The U.S., Eric Dent Mar 2013

The Effects Of Illegal Migration From Mexico To The U.S., Eric Dent

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this author's thesis is to explore the arguments and data found on both sides of the debatable issue of illegal immigration in America. This author made use of the plethora of data surrounding this topic that has been generated from various secondary sources. The use of this secondary data allowed for a re-analysis of the original author's findings which aided in the formulation of new questions while providing a different interpretation from the original assessment. The purpose of re-analysis sought to provide readers with a more-in-depth view concerning the influx of undocumented aliens, Mexican nationals in particular, …

The Protective And Developmental Varieties Of Liberal Democracy: A Difference In Kind Or Degree?, Devin K. Joshi Mar 2013

The Protective And Developmental Varieties Of Liberal Democracy: A Difference In Kind Or Degree?, Devin K. Joshi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Liberal democratic governments may differ in both their kind and degree of democracy. However, the literature too often conflates this distinction, hindering our ability to understand what kinds of governing structures are more democratic. To clarify this issue, the article examines two prominent contemporary models of democracy: developmental liberal democracy (DLD) and protective liberal democracy (PLD). While the former takes a 'thicker' approach to governance than the latter, conventional wisdom holds that these systems differ only in kind rather than degree. The article tests this assumption through an empirical comparison of electoral, legislative, and information-regulating institutions in two representative cases: …

Reassessing Apec's Role As A Trans-Regional Economic Architecture: Legal And Policy Dimensions, Pasha L. Hsieh Mar 2013

Reassessing Apec's Role As A Trans-Regional Economic Architecture: Legal And Policy Dimensions, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines the two-decade evolution of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the future prospects for Asian regionalism. It argues that while APEC retains advantages over competing regional structures, it should undergo reforms to accelerate the Bogor Goals and ensure its complementarity with the World Trade Organization (WTO). The article first analyzes the impact of stake-holding countries’ trade policies on APEC’s structure and development. By assessing APEC’s soft-law mechanism, it explores APEC’s WTO-plus contributions that reinvigorated the International Technology Agreement negotiations and improved supply chain facilitation. APEC’s goal of creating a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) can …

Dr. Robert L. Bennett: Pioneer And Definer Of Modern Physiatry., John F. Ditunno, Jr, Richard E. Verville

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

Few physiatrists today would appreciate Dr. Robert L. Bennett’s contributions to our specialty, since he most commonly was associated with poliomyelitis, a cured disease for over a half century. Less are aware of the pioneering fusion of physical medicine in 1941 by Krusen’s first resident with the independent living environment of the Georgia Warm Spring Foundation (GWSF) created by a USA president. Bennett recognized polio/GWSF as the workshop and laboratory for showcasing the new specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). He taught us that accurate muscle testing determined the plan of muscle reeducation, which led to functional training with …

Unesco And The U.S. At The Palestinian Impasse: Using A Boomerang Pattern To Public Diplomacy, Oscar Castellanos Del Collado

Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy

There is vast literature on the influence of nonstate actors (NSAs) on intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Successful cases have been documented in which transnational advocacy networks (TANs) use the platforms provided by intergovernmental organizations for their own participation in treaty making, agenda-setting, policy formation and implementation, and to change repressive and norm-violating states’ behavior. However, little has been said about IGOs engaging NSAs to influence their own member states’ preferences. This paper uses the case of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United States on the eve of Palestine’s admission as a member state of the …

Developing Site-Specific Nutrient Criteria From Empirical Models, John R. Olson, Charles P. Hawkins Jan 2013

Developing Site-Specific Nutrient Criteria From Empirical Models, John R. Olson, Charles P. Hawkins

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ecologically meaningful and scientifically defensible nutrient criteria are needed to protect the water quality of USA streams. Criteria based on our best understanding of naturally occurring nutrient concentrations would protect both water quality and aquatic biota. Previous approaches to predicting natural background nutrient concentrations have relied on some form of landscape categorization (e.g., nutrient ecoregions) to account for natural variability among water bodies. However, natural variation within these regions is so high that use of a single criterion can underprotect naturally occurring lownutrient streams and overprotect naturally occurring high-nutrient steams. We developed Random Forest models to predict how baseflow concentrations …

Survey Of Pharmacist-Managed Primary Care Clinics Using Healthcare Failure Mode And Effect Analysis (Hfmea), Ashley H. Vincent, Jasmine D. Gonzolvo, Darin C. Ramsey, Alison M. Walton, Zachary A. Weber, Jessica E. Wilhoite

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Objectives: The primary objective was to expand upon results of a previously piloted patient perception survey with Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (HFMEA), to identify areas within pharmacist-managed clinics needing improvement.

Methods: The survey was adapted for use in pharmacist-managed clinics. Patients completed the survey following regularly scheduled pharmacist appointments. Data were analyzed with a method adapted from HFMEA. Product scores could range from five to 25. A product of five indicates that pharmacists are doing a good job on the items that patients place the most value on, while a product score of 25 indicates that pharmacists are …

Mobile Advertising And Its Acceptance By American Consumers, Kate E. Boudreau Jan 2013

Mobile Advertising And Its Acceptance By American Consumers, Kate E. Boudreau

Management

Mobile advertising creates opportunities for marketers to capture the attention of consumers on a one-to-one basis. However, there is little data proving the success of mobile advertising models. This study examined the drivers that influence consumer’s acceptance of SMS-based mobile advertisements and the differences in responses between two cultures, Finland and the United States. My questionnaire and conceptual model was taken from a study done in Finland in 2007. My results indicated that utility, context and trust are positively related to the acceptance of mobile advertising while sacrifice is negatively related. Control did not have a clear relationship to acceptance …

Investigating Barriers To Celiac Disease Diagnosis And Patient Wellbeing In The U.S. : A Comparative Study Of The United States And Italy, Medelaine Dickinson Jan 2013

Investigating Barriers To Celiac Disease Diagnosis And Patient Wellbeing In The U.S. : A Comparative Study Of The United States And Italy, Medelaine Dickinson

Honors Capstones

This study compared awareness of and attitudes toward celiac disease (CD) among American and Italian medical professionals, patients, and the general public in order to better understand and identify barriers to celiac disease diagnosis and patient wellbeing in the United States. Although the U.S. prevalence of the disease is somewhat higher than in Italy, the rate of diagnosis in the United States is significantly lower. One of the biggest differences between the two countries is awareness level (Guandalini, 2012 & Fasano, 2001). Factors that impact awareness are an important topic for study because of the strong relationship between awareness level …

Recent Changes In U.S. And U.K. Overseas Anti-Corruption Enforcement Under The Fcpa And The U.K. Bribery Law: Private Equity Compliance, Isaac A. Binkovitz

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

The following discussion provides a preliminary guide for those tasked with steering private equity firms through the shifting obstacle course of overseas anti-corruption compliance. Section I briefly reviews the centrality of overseas anti-corruption enforcement and its role in creating a more hospitable business climate in emerging markets. Section I also examines the American and British enforcement regimes in general before analyzing the most recent changes–specifically, changes as to the scope of liability and expansion of their jurisdiction. This section is designed to help determine whether investments or acquisitions fall within the purview of either enforcement regime. Section II discusses various …

Sectarianism And External Intervention: The Us Occupation Of Iraq And The Rise Of Political Sectarianism In The Arab World, Gamal M. Selim, Dalia Rushdy

Political Science

Into A Wild New Yonder: The United States Air Force And The Origins Of Its Information Age, Robert Howard Lass Jan 2013

Into A Wild New Yonder: The United States Air Force And The Origins Of Its Information Age, Robert Howard Lass

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is an organization operationally focused on gathering, processing, and utilizing vast quantities of information, so much so that it added "cyberspace" to its core missions of air and space in 2005. Service leaders have argued that a USAF information revolution - its entrance into the "Information Age" - began as early as the first computers in the 1940s or as late as the proliferation of networks in the 1990s. Upon close inspection, however, it becomes clear that such assertions overlook decades of information operations and management, and overemphasize the concept of a single information age. …

Dye Tracing Results From The Arbor Trails Sinkhole, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Austin, Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2013-0501, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

ABSTRACT On January 24, 2012, a 4.5 inch rainfall filled a Storm Water Retention Pond (SWRP) located in the recharge zone of the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer with about 10 feet of stormwater. Subsequently, a cover-collapse sinkhole developed within the floor of the SWRP, measuring about 30 ft in diameter and 12 ft deep. About 7 million gallons of stormwater drained into the aquifer through this opening. To determine the path, velocity, and destination of stormwater entering the sinkhole, a dye trace was conducted. Phloxine B was injected into the sinkhole on February 3, 2012. The dye …

Teacher's Attitudes Towards Integrating Technology: Case Studies In Saudi Arabia And The United States, Asma Mohammed Alharbi

Masters Theses

This study examines teachers' attitudes towards integrating technology in Saudi Arabia and the United States. A case study approach was used to identify several factors that challenge teachers and schools to adapt or integrate technology. And, the case study also reveals similarities and differences between the preparation and practice of teachers in Saudi Arabia and in the United States.

The data was collected through semi-structured interviews distributed to ten teachers from Saudi Arabia and the United States. These interviews were analyzed to determine teachers' attitudes in both countries and to compare and contrast these results. Findings reveal that teachers from …

Untangling Cultural Differences In Behavioral, Physiological, And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia And Alzheimer’S Disease, John S. Avant

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; 4th ed. Revised; American Psychiatric Association) and (BPSD) there are many behavioral, physiological, and psychological issues that have been correlated with the progression of the Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Examples of these issues include; emotional regulation problems, variations in eating behavior, and an advancing decline in memory. Though certain symptoms of the disease seem to be widely universal, current literature shows that a number of disparities do exist. There are several differences between and within populations suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that are influenced by various …

Neighbor-Love As A Keystone To Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Chapter by Brian Stiltner from a collection of essays edited by Marinus C. Iwuchukwu and Brian Stiltner.

"This is a collection of essays that address inter-faith dialogue between Muslims and Christians in America and Africa. It addresses the issues dealing with how some Christians depict America as founded on Christian principles, and how this might deter dialogue across different religions. The goal is to get people to converse, not as formulaic Muslims or Christians, but as people with complex, plural, and ever-changing identities that defuse religious antagonism"--Publisher website.

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) plays a vital role in protecting and managing some of the last remnants of native mixed-grass prairie in the region. The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) and Fire Ecology Program (FireEP) surveyed 12 long-term monitoring plots in Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in 2012 as part of an effort to better understand the condition of plant communities in the park. We measured plant diversity and cover, looked for the presence of exotic species that may be newly invading the park, and evaluated the amount of human and natural disturbance …
