Non-Cognitive Factors Affecting Undergraduate Student Success In Core Composition Courses, Samantha J. Spitak Jan 2015

Non-Cognitive Factors Affecting Undergraduate Student Success In Core Composition Courses, Samantha J. Spitak

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The intention of this study was to determine what, if any, non-cognitive factors affect student performance in core composition courses. "Non-cognitive factor" is a term referring to non-academic and non-intellectual characteristics of a student's experience. These factors may be emotional, environmental, psychosocial, etc. Some prior research has been conducted on non-cognitive factors relating to admission of minority populations, but this research is likely to be outdated. Six potential non-cognitive factors were proposed for this study: Confidence, Motivation, Socioeconomic Class, Emotional Support, Campus Climate, and Living Situation. The results of this study indicated that non-cognitive factors do influence student performance in …

The Impact Sex Trafficking Education Has On Reported Cases, Ivette Cervantes

2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The purpose of this research study was to determine whether educating the public on the issue of sex trafficking has an impact on cases being reported. Several non-profit organizations located across Texas were interviewed. The organizations' mission is to provide services to sex trafficking victims and raise public awareness. Interviews were conducted with organizations located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston. A major finding is that failure to properly identify victims is a core issue. Public awareness has increased. The public is aware that sex trafficking is a current issue, but their awareness does not impact cases being reported. …

Connecting Undergraduate Science Education With The Needs Of Today's Graduates, Viviane Callier, Richard H. Singiser, Nathan L. Vanderford

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Undergraduate science programs are not providing graduates with the knowledgebase and skills they need to be successful on today’s job market. Curricular changes relevant to today’s marketplace and more opportunities for internships and work experience during students’ secondary education would facilitate a smoother transition to the working world and help employers find graduates that possess both the hard and soft skills needed in the workplace. In this article, we discuss these issues and offer solutions that would generate more marketplace-ready undergraduates.

The Use Of Stress Reduction Techniques In Nursing Education, Jennifer S. Bauer May 2014

The Use Of Stress Reduction Techniques In Nursing Education, Jennifer S. Bauer

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Stress is a complex phenomenon that has significant effects on students which may disturb their physiological, psychological, and spiritual health and well-being. Nursing students have been identified to be at high risk for stress during their education. Stress can arise from new clinical experiences, academic load, and personal stressors (Jones & Johnston, 2006). This increase in stress can lead to the student’s inability to assimilate and learn within the classroom and clinical settings. A review of the literature provided evidence that reported a positive relationship between guided imagery and a decrease in stress and anxiety. This evidence-based practice (EBP) project …

Self-Efficacy, Medication Adherence And Blood Pressure Control In Mexican Immigrants, Rayanne Macnee

2014 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This study is a quantitative descriptive design. The purpose of this study was to describe blood pressure control, self-efficacy, and medication adherence in Mexican immigrants living in the United States. Thirty participants, who were Mexican immigrants with a previous diagnosis of hypertension and over 18 years of age, were recruited at a North Texas clinic. Once informed consent was obtained, blood pressure, medication adherence, and self-efficacy were measured. Next, several demographic questions were asked to better understand the population. Data was analyzed for frequencies and range of response for the descriptive variables. Of the 30 subjects interviewed, 56.7% had a …

A Compare And Contrast Analysis On The Implementation Of A Succession Plan On Multinational Consumer Electronic Corporations, Washima Huq

2014 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This study was conducted to compare and contrast the net income, share price, and brand image of two multinational corporations that experienced CEO succession in 2011: Apple Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. Apple had implemented a succession plan but HP had not. This comparison helps strengthen the claim that succession planning at the CEO level is a key factor in a company’s success. This study was conducted by gathering information from the Securities and Exchange Commission, Yahoo Finance, Consumer Reports, and scholarly articles on succession planning. The opening share price increased by $13.17 for Apple and $0.47 for HP on the …

Investigating Gender Differences In Student Views Of Nature Of Science, Understanding Of Evolution, Religious Beliefs And Acceptance Of Evolution, Danielle Carlton May 2014

Investigating Gender Differences In Student Views Of Nature Of Science, Understanding Of Evolution, Religious Beliefs And Acceptance Of Evolution, Danielle Carlton

2014 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Evolution is a unifying theory in biology and provides foundational knowledge needed for future learning in the subject. However, acceptance of evolution may be challenging for students due to differing views of nature of science, understanding of evolution, and/or extent of separating evolution from religious beliefs. Further, males and females may vary in their views of the nature of science, understanding of evolution, religious beliefs, and/or acceptance of evolution; and such potential differences should be considered for all students to successfully learn this important scientific theory. Therefore, the research questions of this study were: 1) What are descriptive patterns and …

The University Of Rhode Island International Engineering Program: A Model For The Merger Of Technology And The Humanities, John M. Grandin, Sigrid Berka

Russian Language Journal

Contrary to a long-established and seemingly irrefutable tradition, American parents, educators, private and public sector leaders, and students are beginning to doubt the value of a university education. Charges have been leveled, for example, that students today are spending substantially less time on academics than their predecessors and are making little progress during their undergraduate years in their ability to read, write, speak, or think analytically and critically (see, for example, Arum and Roksa 2011, Vedder and Denhart 2011). Others have argued that college is burdening young people with lifelong debt to the degree that it is stifling their creativity …

Promoting Reu Participation From Students In Underrepresented Groups, Heather M. Russell, Heather A. Dye Jan 2014

Promoting Reu Participation From Students In Underrepresented Groups, Heather M. Russell, Heather A. Dye

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Research experiences for undergraduates (REUs) are an important component of undergraduate education. However, at the 2012 Trends in Undergraduate Research in the Mathematical Sciences conference, questions were raised about why many REU programs see few applications from students that are members of underrepresented groups. We examine the benefits of REUs and factors preventing or promoting participation in REUs.

Explicit Instruction Of Scientific Explanation And Argument In An Undergraduate Introductory Biology Laboratory Course Using The Claim, Evidence And Reasoning Framework, Rosemary Eva Becker Jan 2014

Explicit Instruction Of Scientific Explanation And Argument In An Undergraduate Introductory Biology Laboratory Course Using The Claim, Evidence And Reasoning Framework, Rosemary Eva Becker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Scientific explanation and scientific argument are important aspects of science inquiry and science education. Though students of all ages find construction of written scientific explanations and arguments difficult, explicit instruction in scientific explanation and argument can improve student ability. This quantitative research study used a non-equivalent comparison group design to investigate the affect of explicit instruction of scientific explanation and argument in an undergraduate introductory biology laboratory course, using a college level appropriate modified CER Framework (McNeill et al., 2006). This study compared students receiving explicit instruction in scientific explanation and argument with students taking traditionally-designed biology laboratory courses. Students …
