Identification Of The Plateau Of Cadmium Extraction From Aqueous Solution By Invasive Macrophyte: Eichhornia Crassipes, Micalah Spenrath
Identification Of The Plateau Of Cadmium Extraction From Aqueous Solution By Invasive Macrophyte: Eichhornia Crassipes, Micalah Spenrath
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Cadmium is an extremely deleterious heavy metal characterized by high toxicity, environmental disruptiveness and difficult removal. Utilizing an aquatic macrophyte, Eichhornia crassipes, as a phytoremediant of cadmium has been shown to be experimentally viable and less environmentally degrading than conventional methods of heavy metal remediation. To further understand the time required to optimize cadmium uptake and minimize the rerelease of contaminants, E. crassipes was studied to identify the plateau of cadmium extraction. The experimental plants were housed in aquatic environments with cadmium concentrations of 5 ppm for 144 hours. Water samples were analyzed in atmosphere in a Shimadzu EDX- 7000 …
The Role Of Wnt3a In Bone-Muscle Biochemical Crosstalk And Promoting Myoblast Differentiation Among Mouse Primary Muscle Cells, Sarah Daggs
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Bone and muscle crosstalk is a newly emerging field that focuses on the ability of bone cells and muscle cells to communicate with each other through mechanical and biochemical mechanisms. Until recently, the secretory function of both bone and muscle cells has largely been unexplored. My thesis focuses on continuing my faculty mentor’s current research on bone-muscle crosstalk by analyzing the effects of WNT3a, an important bone-secreted factor of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, on myogenesis. Myogenesis is the process of producing muscle cells from stem cells in the embryonic stages of development and the regeneration of muscle tissue after cell injury …
An Investigation Of Chlorate And Perchlorate In Onsite-Generated Hypochlorite, Kaleisha Haynes Miller
An Investigation Of Chlorate And Perchlorate In Onsite-Generated Hypochlorite, Kaleisha Haynes Miller
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This investigation evaluated the occurrence and concentration of chlorate and perchlorate in two low-strength onsite-generated hypochlorite systems in the DFW Metroplex, and attempted to correlate their concentrations to operating conditions and input materials of the generation process. Chlorate and perchlorate are disinfectant byproducts found in drinking water treated with hypochlorite and are known to pose potential health problems. Hypochlorite samples were quenched to remove chlorine and then analyzed using ion chromatography to determine the byproduct concentration. Results showed a correlation between byproduct concentration and the density of the solution as well as with the chlorine concentration. Other factors, such as …
The Smart Hospital Management System, Neelim Haider
The Smart Hospital Management System, Neelim Haider
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The UTA Smart Hospital is a training facility for nursing students. Our goal is to create a web platform that allows the faculty to manage their hospital information in one place; previously, this information was scattered among different websites and files. We first derived requirements for the website, and using these requirements, our team then created a prototype of a website. It was found that our website had the capability of implementing most of the features needed by the hospital, yet we could only implement features that were considered to be a higher priority. In conclusion, the website was able …

Perceptions Of Active Learning Between Faculty And Undergraduates: Differing Views Among Departments, Lorelei E. Patrick, Leigh Ann Howell, William Wischusen
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
There have been numerous calls recently to increase the use of active learning in university science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classrooms to more actively engage students and enhance student learning. However, few studies have investigated faculty and student perceptions regarding the effectiveness of active learning or the barriers to its implementation. Previous work surveying a single class in a single department has suggested that faculty and students have different perceptions of the effectiveness of active learning strategies and the barriers faculty face when implementing these teaching strategies. We expand on these previous findings by surveying a larger and more …

Becoming A Scientist: Using First-Year Undergraduate Science Courses To Promote Identification With Science Disciplines, Chloe Ruff, Brett D. Jones
Education Faculty Publications
In this qualitative study, we examined how two professors (a physicist and biochemist) of first year college students perceived their students’ development of identification in biochemistry or physics and how they actively supported this development. The professors described students who entered college with different levels of domain identification and different expectations for their college science experience depending upon whether they were in a biochemistry or physics major. Although neither professor was familiar with research related to the concept of domain identification, their beliefs about their students’ identification and academic support strategies generally aligned with the Osborne and Jones (2011) model …

A Mathematical Model Of Recycling, Amanda Patrick
A Mathematical Model Of Recycling, Amanda Patrick
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
As epidemic-type mathematical models have been previously used to study diseases, rumors and behaviors, their application will be further applied to study recycling influence. The types of influences taken into account were recyclers influencing non- recyclers to recycle, recyclers influencing other recyclers to quit recycling (recycling discouragement), and advertisements influencing non-recyclers to recycle. Generally, autonomous differential equations can be analyzed by calculating the equilibrium solutions and finding the eigenvalues to determine stability. The recycling population at UTA was modeled for constant and changing population. The average population increase and decrease were calculated for the system with constant population to calculate …
Mandatory Minimum Sentences: Examining The Unfair Consequences Of Establishing Fairness, Sami Ghubril
Mandatory Minimum Sentences: Examining The Unfair Consequences Of Establishing Fairness, Sami Ghubril
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
America’s war on drugs caused a significant increase in federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws. These laws were designed to serve as a deterrent to crime, carrying excessively punitive sentences for basic drug offenses, often without the possibility of parole. These laws are problematic because they skew the balance of power in the criminal justice system and treat medical problems as legal ones. This work will examine the history of America’s mandatory minimum sentencing laws, explain their expansion during America’s war on drugs, and outline the impact these laws have on society. This paper will demonstrate that mandatory minimum sentencing laws …
Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Of A Wireless Grip Strength Measurement System For Telemedicine, Kaustubh Shinde
Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Of A Wireless Grip Strength Measurement System For Telemedicine, Kaustubh Shinde
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Many daily functions require involvement of the flexor musculature of the forearms and hands; i.e., the muscles that produce grip strength. Grip strength is commonly used as a measure to track general wellness, disease progression, and the effects of therapeutic interventions. Most dynamometers simply show grip force generated on a display and lack data capture ability. As part of a more comprehensive, self-administered, web-based human performance measurement capability, a grip strength module is being developed and was the focus of a spring 2016 electrical engineering senior design project. This project focuses on the performance evaluation of that system, which incorporates …

Aggression, Gender, Feasibility, And Brainstorming Factors In Relation To Perceived Novelty And Enjoyment, Michael Perez
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The purpose of this study was to analyze aspects of brainstorming and qualities of final ideas that affect the perceived novelty and enjoyment of generated ideas. In this study, participants were instructed to generate ideas for a new sport and post them on an online message board. They then met (on Skype) with other members of a 4-person group to select and elaborate a single, final sport idea. Three coders rated the final sports ideas for feasibility, perceived enjoyment, and aggressiveness. A linguistic analysis of the final sports ideas was also conducted. The message board activity was analyzed by counting …
Canterbury On The Airwaves: Anglican Radio Broadcasting In The United States, Lorenzo Marconi
Canterbury On The Airwaves: Anglican Radio Broadcasting In The United States, Lorenzo Marconi
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Most literature on Christian radio focuses on Evangelicals and Roman Catholics; however, Anglicans have been on the airwaves longest. Despite this, Anglican radio is much rarer than Evangelical or Catholic radio, historically and currently. There is little academic literature to establish why this is the case. Using in-depth interviews with Anglican clergy who currently broadcast, or who have broadcast on the radio, this thesis examines reasons for the lack of Anglican radio and what it would take to increase its presence. Findings indicate the main causes of Anglican radio’s scarcity are Anglicans’ overall lack of interest in radio, a lack …

General Mobility Assistant, Roopak Karulkar
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Sitting and rising from a chair are two of the most demanding activities performed by an individual based on the muscle groups required to execute the necessary movements. As people age, their ability to sit and stand without assistance diminishes and they require external assistance. This may cause significant detriment to their lifestyle and quality of life. Currently available lifting solutions are bulky, expensive or require special operating conditions. The goal of this project was to design a portable and cost-efficient mobility assistant and give elderly individuals greater independence.
Aqua Pod: Portable Interchangeable Arsenic Filter For Individual Water Purification, Alissa Hendricks
Aqua Pod: Portable Interchangeable Arsenic Filter For Individual Water Purification, Alissa Hendricks
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Millions live without safe water despite modern technology. For those living in first-world countries, access to large-scale water purification or bottled water is common. However, problems arise for those living in villages where ground water is severely contaminated with heavy metals, particularly Arsenic (As). While large-scale processes can remove arsenic, there is a lack of portable, and affordable devices that can remove these contaminants. Our portable arsenic filter is not only affordable, but also interchangeable. The interchangeability allows for a decrease in waste of filter material, an important fact given that the cost of arsenic filters is much higher than …
Airbus Helicopter Blade Installation Cell Redesign, Jasmine Lucero
Airbus Helicopter Blade Installation Cell Redesign, Jasmine Lucero
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Airbus Helicopter is a global company with European roots located in Grand Prairie, TX. They customize helicopters for private customers, such as tourism agencies, law enforcement, and hospitals, as well as assemble the helicopters, install the blades and perform test flights. With the large number of customers they serve, there is a need to decrease the cycle time for the blade installation process and make it safer and more efficient. One way to target this problem is by relocating blade storage or designing an external blade storage. Another way is to redesign Airbus’s blade installation cell into a portable station …
Filling A Gap In The Market: An Industrial Rgb-D Camera, Hussain Mucklai
Filling A Gap In The Market: An Industrial Rgb-D Camera, Hussain Mucklai
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Computer vision has seen dramatic advances over the past few years, yet most industrial 3D-color cameras still cost many thousands of dollars, and there remains a gap in the market for a mid-range priced product (~$500). This work presents the research done in the design and development of such a device. The industry standards which must be met in order to succeed are in the realm of hardware and software. We show that by taking advantage of inexpensive, mass-produced hardware, as well as 3D printing, hardware costs can be cut down. By leveraging the open-source community to its utmost limit, …
Successful Female Students In Undergraduate Computer Science And Computer Engineering: Motivation, Self-Regulation, And Qualitative Characteristics, Melissa Patterson Hazley
Successful Female Students In Undergraduate Computer Science And Computer Engineering: Motivation, Self-Regulation, And Qualitative Characteristics, Melissa Patterson Hazley
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Computer Science (CS) and Computer Engineering (CE) fields typically have not been successful at recruiting or retaining women students. Research indicates several reasons for this shortage but mainly from three perspectives: social issues, exposure/prior knowledge and curriculum issues in K-12 settings. This mixed-methods research addresses a gap in the literature by investigating the motivation and self-regulation behaviors of successful female students who are studying computer science and computer engineering. The findings in phase one of this study indicated that learning and performance approach goals predicted adaptive strategic self-regulation behaviors including strategy use, knowledge building and engagement. Learning avoidance goals predicted …

A Framework For Understanding The Characteristics Of Complexity In Biology, Joseph Dauer, Jenny Dauer
A Framework For Understanding The Characteristics Of Complexity In Biology, Joseph Dauer, Jenny Dauer
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Understanding the functioning of natural systems is not easy, although there is general agreement that understanding complex systems is an important goal for science education. Defining what makes a natural system complex will assist in identifying gaps in research on student reasoning about systems. The goal of this commentary is to propose a framework that explicitly defines the ways in which biological systems are complex and to discuss the potential relevance of these complexity dimensions to conducting research on student reasoning about complexity in biology classrooms. We use an engineering framework for dimensions of complexity and discuss how this framework …

Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery
Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The number of international students pursuing degrees at U.S. institutions at the undergraduate level surpassed those at the graduate level for the first time in 2013. Additionally, the majority of international students coming to the U.S. are from China. This phenomenological study used a conceptual framework of Schlossberg's Transition Model (1995) and the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Model (Museus, 2014) to analyze the experiences of Chinese undergraduate students in their first year of college in the United States. Three transition types were identified - academic, social/personal, and linguistic - and the students' preparation, sources of institutional support, and coping strategies …
