Return-From-Orbit Spaceplane Configurations With Varying Geometry, Missions, And Planetary Environments, Leonardo Piñero-Pérez Aug 2018

Return-From-Orbit Spaceplane Configurations With Varying Geometry, Missions, And Planetary Environments, Leonardo Piñero-Pérez

2018 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This thesis intends to remove underlying conceptual assumptions for spacecraft design and build a parameterized, physics-based approach based on geometry to generate a continuum of re-entry vehicle configurations. These vehicle configurations are then assessed by their payload, orbital and atmospheric maneuvering, and descent performance capabilities. This assessment is designed such that different missions on different planetary bodies can be analyzed. In addition to selected historical configurations, the specific geometric parameters are then analyzed to determine how specific changes in certain parameters affect aircraft performance. In this way, the values for basic vehicle geometry can be selected in the proper combination …

An Investigation Of Sub-Meter Skill In Stem And Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Laura A. Tingin Aug 2018

An Investigation Of Sub-Meter Skill In Stem And Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Laura A. Tingin

Masters Theses

This study designed a nationally-relevant, valid, and reliable survey that measures STEM and Non-STEM undergraduate student familiarity with sub-meter metric scale and common sub-meter sized science objects. The instrument assesses scalar relationship and scalar magnitude, as explained by Cheek, LaDue, and Shipley (2017). The instrument development was based on an existing Scale of Objects Questionnaire (SOQ) instrument created by Tretter, Jones, Andre, Negishi, & Minogue (2006a) which was modified to be nationally relevant and in an electronic format in two phases: online survey development and undergraduate pilot testing. Online survey development was framed in the tailored design method described by …

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell Jul 2018

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

College instructors in the United States usually make their own decisions about how to design course exams. Even though summative course exams are well known to be important to student success, we know little about the decision making of instructors when designing course exams. To probe how instructors design exams for introductory biology, we conducted an exploratory interview study with seven instructors teaching the same introductory biology course at a large university. We found that despite designing exams for the same course, instructor exam decisions differed with regard to what content was assessed, the exam format, the cognitive difficulty of …

Ethics Education In Engineering: Practices On And Off The Campus, Katherine Theis Jun 2018

Ethics Education In Engineering: Practices On And Off The Campus, Katherine Theis

Undergraduate Voices

This paper will focus on two major methods for educating engineers in ethics. It is important to realize that two sets of standards exist within the field of engineering, both from the professional standards set within industries and from the personal moral standards held by engineers themselves. This article first examines the education of ethics within the workplace as some engineers have no previous training in ethics. Second, it discusses how ethics is introduced to engineers through university undergraduate and graduate courses. It will also evaluate whether ethics courses are more effective than the real-world application found through the professional …

Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee May 2018

Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Because language provides the framework through which knowledge is constructed, it is crucial to consider the ways in which students with limited English proficiencies are able to express their understanding. English language learners (ELLs) make up a significant portion of the student body in the education system and represent many ethnic and racial minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields (Burke & Mattis, 2007). Despite the national push to build a more diversified, STEM-ready workforce, there is little research that considers the way ELLs are assessed in STEM courses at the postsecondary level. Literature reports that science tests …

Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Thermal Management Of A Li-Ion Battery Pack, Divya Chalise May 2018

Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Thermal Management Of A Li-Ion Battery Pack, Divya Chalise

2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Thermal management of Li-ion battery packs is a critical technological challenge that directly impacts safety and performance. Removal of heat generated in individual Li- ion cells into the ambient is a considerably complicated problem involving multiple heat transfer modes. This work develops an iterative analytical technique to model conjugate heat transfer in coolant-based thermal management of a Li-ion battery pack. Solutions for the governing energy conservation equations for thermal conduction and convection are derived and coupled with each other in an iterative fashion to determine the final temperature distribution. The analytical model is used to investigate the dependence of the …

Reconstructing The Past: Rebuilding Churches And Reinventing Identity In Postwar Germany, Virginia Morris May 2018

Reconstructing The Past: Rebuilding Churches And Reinventing Identity In Postwar Germany, Virginia Morris

2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

When the Second World War ended in 1945, Germany lay in ruins. Divided East and West, under Western and Soviet occupation, their country devastated, Germans began to rebuild their lives, homes, and country while searching for a way to process their role in the war, their defeat, and its meaning for themselves as a people. One way they began to reconstruct a sense of identity was to highlight historic German cultural creations. Germans, amidst the physical and political turmoil that surrounded them under military occupation, expended extraordinary efforts to preserve and rebuild two churches nearly obliterated by Allied bombing--the Frauenkirche …

Glovelet: A Wearable 3d And 2d Tracking Glove, Prasoon Gautam May 2018

Glovelet: A Wearable 3d And 2d Tracking Glove, Prasoon Gautam

2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The traditional mouse as a user-interactive device has been around for quite some time but can be a hindrance when used to control three dimensional devices. Through Glovelet, my team and I seek to develop a wearable glove that can replace the traditional mouse with a more user-interactive and easy-to-use device. This would greatly enhance the user experience and would allow users to employ their hands to move objects, both twodimensional and three-dimensional, on the computer screen, thereby making the experience more intuitive for younger and older adults. Glovelet will be designed from the beginning to be light-weight, comfortable, and …

Training Darknet Yolo For Use In An Industrial Setting, Ashley Quimod May 2018

Training Darknet Yolo For Use In An Industrial Setting, Ashley Quimod

2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Darknet YOLO is an object detection software which is based around the usage of a neural network to perform its real-time predictions. YOLO stands out from other object detectors with its speed and method of prediction, illustrated in its name, “You Only Look Once,” which analyzes an image once for its predictions. Our team was tasked with training YOLO to detect objects common to an industrial warehouse setting, with these efforts soon to be followed by testing phases. Creation of the datasets involved the tracing and annotation of hundreds of images per class to be fed into YOLO’s network, which …
