Characterization And Synthesis Of An Aggregation Based Biosensor, Anura Shrestha Dec 2020

Characterization And Synthesis Of An Aggregation Based Biosensor, Anura Shrestha

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Polydiacetylene (PDA) is a polymer class consisting of double and triple bonds and is formed when diacetylene amphiphiles become closely packed and undergo UV polymerization. When properly designed, PDA forms vesicles, which, when stimulated, give a colorimetric change due to rotation of the ene-yne alternating backbone. PDA-based vesicles in which the pendant side-chains possess a recognition moiety for a target of interest have thus been implemented as biosensors for the successful detection of different biomolecules. Here we report a means for rapidly generating a PDA-based biosensor by direct solid-phase peptide synthesis of a peptide recognition moiety appended with 10,12 pentacosadiynoic …

Beverage Management: An Android Application, Kunal Samant Dec 2020

Beverage Management: An Android Application, Kunal Samant

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

A common problem is the keeping track of products in our kitchen/pantry. This work aims to tackle that problem by providing an inventory for these products and our team’s focus has been on beer. We developed an android application which uses an in-built barcode scanner (through the phone’s camera) which detects the barcode number of a beer scanned. The application sends this data to the database which searches the beer dataset for the information associated with this number. This process automates the way users can add and remove inventory. Lastly, users add an expiry date associated with the beer to …

Biological Nitrogen Fixation In Aeschynomene Indica: A Comparison Between Btai1 And A Native Strain Isolated In Texas, Abbey Raymond Dec 2020

Biological Nitrogen Fixation In Aeschynomene Indica: A Comparison Between Btai1 And A Native Strain Isolated In Texas, Abbey Raymond

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Host-microbe interactions between legumes and rhizobia exemplify a symbiotic relationship; the rhizobia provide fixed nitrogen to leguminous plants via symbiotic nitrogen fixation, while they are safely harbored in plant root nodules. In this study, the nodulation of the legume Aeschynomene indica inoculated with BTAi1, a known rhizobium, was monitored and compared when inoculated with TSN2, a newly isolated rhizobium in Texas. Upon maturation, the physical characteristics of the plant were examined, and nitrogen fixation abilities were measured. In addition, the rhizobium isolated from these plants was sequenced and named “TSN2”. It was found that there were no significant differences in …

Satellite Demodulation Utilizing The Hackrf One, Beaglebone Black, And Gnu Radio, Cole Tschritter Dec 2020

Satellite Demodulation Utilizing The Hackrf One, Beaglebone Black, And Gnu Radio, Cole Tschritter

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Satellite signals are an efficient means of receiving data in remote environments. By monitoring satellite signals, a device can be controlled in remote locations, long range communications intercepted, and local sensory data collected. It is possible to utilize a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) that can sample the electromagnetic spectrum and use code to demodulate instead of a typical hardware-defined radio, allowing for a compact, scalable system. This project will use a BeagleBone Black as the controller and the HackRF One for the SDR. Due to variance in modulation types, modulation methods, sample limitations of the HackRF One, and frequency fall off, …

Determining The Role Of Low Molecular Weight Penicillin-Binding Proteins In Carbapenem Tolenerance In Aceinetobacter, Hana Ali Dec 2020

Determining The Role Of Low Molecular Weight Penicillin-Binding Proteins In Carbapenem Tolenerance In Aceinetobacter, Hana Ali

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Antimicrobial resistance is a rapidly increasing threat to public health, where pathogens are no longer susceptible to antimicrobials prescribed to fight infections. Carbapenems are last-resort antimicrobials that bind penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibit cell wall biogenesis, leading to death. Specifically, the pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) demonstrated carbapenem tolerance, or the ability of bacteria to survive in the toxic concentrations without changing the minimal inhibitory concentration. These data represent the first study to understand carbapenem tolerance in Ab. Here, we investigated the physiological significance of low molecular weight (LMW) PBPs, which have not been extensively studied in bacteria and could represent …

Remote Sensing Of Soil Moisture Content, Susav Shrestha Dec 2020

Remote Sensing Of Soil Moisture Content, Susav Shrestha

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Ex-situ measurement systems for dynamic soil properties have been well studied over the years; however, they require physical extraction of soil which is an often laborious and undesirable task. A wireless remote sensing unit consisting of two stainless-steel probes were studied to correlate the changes in the input impedance to the soil moisture content. Theoretical simulations of this design were performed by modelling the soil using the complex dielectric permittivity and by using electromagnetic transmission line theory to compute the optimal spacing, length, and frequency of operation. The analysis of the simulated results shows that a design with 50 cm …

Android Application To Alleviate Stress In Alzheimer Caregivers. An 'Invisible' Crisis: Addressing The Neglect Of Mental Health Burdens In Alzheimer's Caregivers, Chidochashe Pasipanodya Dec 2020

Android Application To Alleviate Stress In Alzheimer Caregivers. An 'Invisible' Crisis: Addressing The Neglect Of Mental Health Burdens In Alzheimer's Caregivers, Chidochashe Pasipanodya

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease characterized by a gradual loss in memory, thinking skills, and the ability to carry out simple tasks. As a result, patients require caregivers to play a critical role by managing household tasks, aiding in personal care, and performing medical procedures. Caregivers often balance family life and/or a career while averaging between 14- 34 hours weekly on patients. This develops into high levels of depression, anxiety, and low quality of life. Limited resources have left this demographic to suffer alone while bearing the burden of caring for a loved one. A mobile application was created to …

Emergency Alerts And The Application Of Location Sharing, Martha Taffa Dec 2020

Emergency Alerts And The Application Of Location Sharing, Martha Taffa

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

With the advancement in technology, a lot of work has been done for the welfare and betterment of people globally. Nevertheless, there are not as many systems implemented to inform deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) people when an emergency alert is going off, or when a similar situation is taking place. This project is about the implementation of a mobile app that gives different pop-up alerts when detecting emergency sounds. The paper mainly focuses on the implementation of the audio classifier and the feature that lets a user share their location with family and friends. The Google Maps application …

Mr-Compatibility Of An Isometric/ Dynamic Plantarflexion Ergometer, Ramtin Behbahan Dec 2020

Mr-Compatibility Of An Isometric/ Dynamic Plantarflexion Ergometer, Ramtin Behbahan

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Plantarflexion Ergometry (PE), in conjunction with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), has shown to be a useful technique in the research and study of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) in patients' extremities. A number of studies have conducted PE experiments with favorable results. However, the devices reviewed lack the MRI compatibility option. They are often not designed to measure angular displacement, which accounts as the displacement variable within the calculated torque and work function. In this research, a fully MRI compatible PE was constructed using commercially available parts. To reduce interference and imaging noise during MRI PE, RF (Radio Frequency), magnetic shielding …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Service-Learning In Lower- & Upper-Division Psychology Courses, Michael J. Figuccio Sep 2020

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Service-Learning In Lower- & Upper-Division Psychology Courses, Michael J. Figuccio

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

Service-learning is a pedagogical technique in which students apply course content to meet a community need. Students are also provided with an opportunity for reflection which results in an array of academic, psychological, and social benefits. This study will highlight the benefits students derive from participating in service-learning exercises in lower and upper division psychology courses. Empirical data suggest that service-learning activities benefit students in both lower and upper division psychology courses; however, students in upper division courses may obtain enhanced benefits. It is recommended to incorporate service-learning experiences throughout the curriculum in both lower and upper division courses in …

Innovative Teaching Knowledge Stays With Users, Brittnee Earl, Karl Mertens, Susan E. Shadle, John P. Ziker Sep 2020

Innovative Teaching Knowledge Stays With Users, Brittnee Earl, Karl Mertens, Susan E. Shadle, John P. Ziker

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Programs seeking to transform undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses often strive for participating faculty to share their knowledge of innovative teaching practices with other faculty in their home departments. Here, we provide interview, survey, and social network analyses revealing that faculty who use innovative teaching practices preferentially talk to each other, suggesting that greater steps are needed for information about innovative practices to reach faculty more broadly.
