Tree Root Influence On Building Foundations In Expansive Clay Soils In North Texas, Rocio Vegamartinez Jan 2022

Tree Root Influence On Building Foundations In Expansive Clay Soils In North Texas, Rocio Vegamartinez

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Coupled with the expansive soil profile and climatic nature of Texas, trees repeatedly damage pavements and building foundations. The drying of tree roots places residential foundations at risk for soil desiccation and displacement. This research seeks to grasp a better understanding of the relationship between Texas expansive soils, tree root growth, and residential foundations in the North Texas area. This paper presents a case study of a residential house in Arlington, Texas, experiencing foundation cracking and settlement with two large trees on the property. Electrical Resistivity Imaging was done to monitor the relationship between the soil and the tree roots. …

Critical Audit Matters In Accounting: Analysis And Study Of The Top 100 Companies From S&P 500 Index For Fiscal Years 2021 And 2022, Anamol Khadka Jan 2022

Critical Audit Matters In Accounting: Analysis And Study Of The Top 100 Companies From S&P 500 Index For Fiscal Years 2021 And 2022, Anamol Khadka

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Critical Audit Matters includes any matter arising from the audit of the financial statements that involves especially challenging, subjective, or complex auditor judgments. These matters are material and need to be communicated to the audit committee by the auditor. The problem with Critical Audit Matters (CAMS) is that it differs for each company, even within the same industry. This can alter from the changing risk environments, new accounting standards and policies, and also from the nature of complexity of each individual audit. The research involved identifying industries whose firms reported the largest numbers of CAMS as well as identifying the …

Comparing Prairie Management Methods’ Effects On Three Native Texan Grasses, Stephanie Howell Jan 2022

Comparing Prairie Management Methods’ Effects On Three Native Texan Grasses, Stephanie Howell

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The Texas Blackland Prairie habitat is under extreme threat. Currently, only 1% of the original prairie remains. Restoration efforts across the state have aimed to address these concerns. This research set out to test the efficacy of the methods used to restore prairies regarding three grasses. Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii, Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Indiangrass, Sorghastrum nutans, were surveyed to establish their species abundance on two fields in North Texas. Based on their abundance and the history of each field, conclusions were drawn on the efficacy of the maintenance. Seeding was found to be inconsequential for A. gerardii and …

Mining And Summarizing Customer Reviews By Generating Feature-Specific Ratings, Prabin Lamichhane Jan 2022

Mining And Summarizing Customer Reviews By Generating Feature-Specific Ratings, Prabin Lamichhane

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This paper proposes a novel method to generate ratings from reviews using a Bayesian technique. One of the reasons for the growing trend of online shopping in e-commerce platforms is its transparent review system, where a customer can review and rate a product that becomes open for others to see. Oftentimes, in making a purchase decision, a customer reads these reviews to get feature-specific information about a product. These reviews, however, are becoming increasingly incomprehensible for a person to read in their entirety because of their large volume. Reading a sample of them may create a biased opinion as they …

Revisiting Clickers: In-Class Questions Followed By At-Home Reflections Are Associated With Higher Student Performance On Related Exam Questions, Dana L. Kirkwood-Watts, Emily K. Bremers, Emily Robinson, Kathleen R. Brazeal, Brian A. Couch Jan 2022

Revisiting Clickers: In-Class Questions Followed By At-Home Reflections Are Associated With Higher Student Performance On Related Exam Questions, Dana L. Kirkwood-Watts, Emily K. Bremers, Emily Robinson, Kathleen R. Brazeal, Brian A. Couch

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Clicker questions are a commonly used active learning technique that stimulates student interactions to help advance understanding of key concepts. Clicker questions are often administered with an initial vote, peer discussion, and a second vote, followed by broader classroom explanation. While clickers can promote learning, some studies have questioned whether students maintain this performance on later exams, highlighting the need to further understand how student answer patterns relate to their understanding of the material and to identify ways for clickers to benefit a broader range of students. Systematic requizzing of concepts during at-home assignments represents a promising mechanism to improve …

Development And Implementation Of Robot Operating Systems For Undergraduates, Chelsey Spitzner Jan 2022

Development And Implementation Of Robot Operating Systems For Undergraduates, Chelsey Spitzner

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The purpose of this project was to create an undergraduate junior lab to teach students about Robotic Operating System (ROS). The labs were designed to highlight the usefulness of ROS and the process used. Designing algorithms, how to send/receive messages, and the hierarchy of how nodes work with each other are emphasized. Taking packages that are open-source then modifying them is also emphasized. This is done so that students can transfer their knowledge from this course to other robot operating systems.

Science Literacy Skills Of First-Generation And Underrepresented First-Year Students And The Stem Pioneers Intervention, Rebecca Sarah Katherine Thompson Jan 2022

Science Literacy Skills Of First-Generation And Underrepresented First-Year Students And The Stem Pioneers Intervention, Rebecca Sarah Katherine Thompson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

First-generation students and other underrepresented groups face particular challenges at college, which can affect whether they thrive in their courses and remain on track to graduate. For students interested in majoring in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, and math), science literacy skills are necessary for success in their coursework and future careers. We investigated the impact of demographic factors on science literacy skills, retention, and grade point average (GPA). The STEM Pioneers program at Montclair State University (MSU; Montclair, New Jersey, USA) was designed to support first-generation students with an interest in STEM who have not yet declared a …
