Differences In Death And Dying Anxiety Among Undergraduate Freshmen And Seniors, Greyson A. Owens Jan 2024

Differences In Death And Dying Anxiety Among Undergraduate Freshmen And Seniors, Greyson A. Owens

Honors College Theses

This research will observe the differences in death anxiety among undergraduate university freshmen and seniors. This study was conducted using a quantitative survey instrument. The Collett-Lester death anxiety scale was used to survey students. The instrument consists of thirty-two Likert scale questions that focused on anxiety levels of death and dying for the respondents and when thinking of others. I asked professors to post a recruitment flyer that I emailed to them on their Folio page, and I also posted these flyers in common areas on the Georgia Southern Campus. Data from freshmen and seniors were collected and analyzed. I …

Pre-Conference Workshop: Affect And Identity In Engineering Education: Understanding How Emotions, Feelings, And Values Shape Our Students' Work And Contribute To Their Engineering Identity, Jessica Swenson, Emma Treadway Jan 2024

Pre-Conference Workshop: Affect And Identity In Engineering Education: Understanding How Emotions, Feelings, And Values Shape Our Students' Work And Contribute To Their Engineering Identity, Jessica Swenson, Emma Treadway

Engineering Faculty Research

In this workshop, we introduce participants to vocabulary and theory to understand their students' affective experiences of doing engineering work. As attention to emotions and other affective elements of engineering student experiences has grown in the literature, this workshop will aid instructors in considering the importance of attitudes, emotions, and values/beliefs for student learning and identity development. The workshop will provide ample opportunity for discussion and reflection, and will empower instructors both to consider scaffolding of assignments with affect in mind and to survey students about their affective experiences in order to iterate on assignment design.

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The elevated rates of failure, dropout, and withdrawal (FDW) in introductory statistics courses pose a significant barrier to students' timely graduation from college. Identifying actionable strategies to support instructors in facilitating student success by reducing FDW rates is paramount. This thesis undertakes a comprehensive approach, leveraging various machine learning algorithms to address this pressing issue. Drawing from three years of data from an introductory statistics course at one of the largest universities in the USA, this study examines the problem in depth. Numerous predictive classification models have been developed, showcasing the efficacy of machine learning techniques in this context. Actionable …

Murray, H. Spinks, Y. Besen-Cassino, E. Emery, B. Johnson, E. Nunez Perez, Y. Wang, D. Lopatto, N. M. Goodey, A. R. Tuininga

PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies Publications

Previous research has shown that female and Hispanic students who are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) face more educational barriers than their non-Hispanic, male peers. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of intersectional identities in the STEM space. In an effort to bridge the gap in underrepresented students' experience, the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies organizes a paid, interdisciplinary, team-based, experiential learning and internship program called the Green Teams that occurs during 10 weeks of the summer. The Green Teams Program strives to provide undergraduate students from all backgrounds–academically, economically, and demographically–an opportunity to …

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Originally developed for application to ecology courses for undergraduate majors, the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) Framework offers possibilities for adaptation to courses with ecology content for many other audiences. Recognizing the extraordinary range of classroom contexts and constraints, we developed some general, flexible recommendations and approaches to guide instructors in adapting the 4DEE Framework for an array of non-major audiences and classroom context needs. Our hope is that 4DEE-aligned courses for non-majors will provide these students with greater appreciation of ecology and inspire them to use their knowledge to address many critical environmental issues in their personal and professional lives. …

Understanding The Effects Of A Mobile Flow Visualization Learning Tool On Engineering Undergraduate Interest In Fluid Mechanics, Lori M. Openshaw Dec 2023

Understanding The Effects Of A Mobile Flow Visualization Learning Tool On Engineering Undergraduate Interest In Fluid Mechanics, Lori M. Openshaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Fluid mechanics is a difficult engineering course that tends to act as a weed-out course for undergraduate students. Despite this, fluid mechanics is critical, with related careers in disciplines such as Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Environmental, Biological, Ocean, and Naval engineering. Within these fields, there is a lack of graduates with sufficient fluid mechanics knowledge to fill the available positions. One solution to this career pipeline is to increase student interest and understanding of fluid mechanics.

Efforts to make fluid mechanics more interesting and easily understood include curricular changes such as emphasizing historical aspects of fluids, computer simulations that model complex …

Exploring Students’ Epistemological Understanding Of Atomic Structure Models, Claire V. Ward, Morgan Balabanoff Sep 2023

Exploring Students’ Epistemological Understanding Of Atomic Structure Models, Claire V. Ward, Morgan Balabanoff

The Cardinal Edge

Developing a robust understanding of atomic structure and the nature of matter is foundational across chemistry and STEM courses. The development of this concept is challenging because it relies on models to illustrate something not directly observable. Scientific models are important tools used to explain phenomena, particularly phenomena that are not directly observable. In general chemistry, students are typically asked to consider four different models: (1) the particle model, (2) the nuclear model, (3) the Bohr model, and (4) the Quantum model. Each depiction has its own advantages and limitations, where instructors introduce each model to explain specific parts of …
