Return-From-Orbit Spaceplane Configurations With Varying Geometry, Missions, And Planetary Environments, Leonardo Piñero-Pérez
Return-From-Orbit Spaceplane Configurations With Varying Geometry, Missions, And Planetary Environments, Leonardo Piñero-Pérez
2018 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This thesis intends to remove underlying conceptual assumptions for spacecraft design and build a parameterized, physics-based approach based on geometry to generate a continuum of re-entry vehicle configurations. These vehicle configurations are then assessed by their payload, orbital and atmospheric maneuvering, and descent performance capabilities. This assessment is designed such that different missions on different planetary bodies can be analyzed. In addition to selected historical configurations, the specific geometric parameters are then analyzed to determine how specific changes in certain parameters affect aircraft performance. In this way, the values for basic vehicle geometry can be selected in the proper combination …

An Investigation Of Sub-Meter Skill In Stem And Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Laura A. Tingin
An Investigation Of Sub-Meter Skill In Stem And Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Laura A. Tingin
Masters Theses
This study designed a nationally-relevant, valid, and reliable survey that measures STEM and Non-STEM undergraduate student familiarity with sub-meter metric scale and common sub-meter sized science objects. The instrument assesses scalar relationship and scalar magnitude, as explained by Cheek, LaDue, and Shipley (2017). The instrument development was based on an existing Scale of Objects Questionnaire (SOQ) instrument created by Tretter, Jones, Andre, Negishi, & Minogue (2006a) which was modified to be nationally relevant and in an electronic format in two phases: online survey development and undergraduate pilot testing. Online survey development was framed in the tailored design method described by …

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
College instructors in the United States usually make their own decisions about how to design course exams. Even though summative course exams are well known to be important to student success, we know little about the decision making of instructors when designing course exams. To probe how instructors design exams for introductory biology, we conducted an exploratory interview study with seven instructors teaching the same introductory biology course at a large university. We found that despite designing exams for the same course, instructor exam decisions differed with regard to what content was assessed, the exam format, the cognitive difficulty of …
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Because language provides the framework through which knowledge is constructed, it is crucial to consider the ways in which students with limited English proficiencies are able to express their understanding. English language learners (ELLs) make up a significant portion of the student body in the education system and represent many ethnic and racial minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields (Burke & Mattis, 2007). Despite the national push to build a more diversified, STEM-ready workforce, there is little research that considers the way ELLs are assessed in STEM courses at the postsecondary level. Literature reports that science tests …

Statistical Analysis Of Household Labor Supply: Education, College, And Earning Power, Hrishabh Khakurel
Statistical Analysis Of Household Labor Supply: Education, College, And Earning Power, Hrishabh Khakurel
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
When we look at the general trend in household labor supply, historically we can see that when husbands start earning more, their wives reduce their labor supply. In the last few decades, the number of wives who have attained higher education has increased, and with this, the number of wives earning a higher income than their husbands have also increased. But still, research till now suggests that husbands’ labor supply is not significantly affected by their wives’ wage increase. This paper studies the labor supply of husbands and wives relative to their educational attainment by using educational attainment to measure …
Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Thermal Management Of A Li-Ion Battery Pack, Divya Chalise
Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Thermal Management Of A Li-Ion Battery Pack, Divya Chalise
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Thermal management of Li-ion battery packs is a critical technological challenge that directly impacts safety and performance. Removal of heat generated in individual Li- ion cells into the ambient is a considerably complicated problem involving multiple heat transfer modes. This work develops an iterative analytical technique to model conjugate heat transfer in coolant-based thermal management of a Li-ion battery pack. Solutions for the governing energy conservation equations for thermal conduction and convection are derived and coupled with each other in an iterative fashion to determine the final temperature distribution. The analytical model is used to investigate the dependence of the …

Glovelet: A Wearable 3d And 2d Tracking Glove, Prasoon Gautam
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The traditional mouse as a user-interactive device has been around for quite some time but can be a hindrance when used to control three dimensional devices. Through Glovelet, my team and I seek to develop a wearable glove that can replace the traditional mouse with a more user-interactive and easy-to-use device. This would greatly enhance the user experience and would allow users to employ their hands to move objects, both twodimensional and three-dimensional, on the computer screen, thereby making the experience more intuitive for younger and older adults. Glovelet will be designed from the beginning to be light-weight, comfortable, and …
Improving Automatic Summarization For Low- And Moderate-Resource, Morphologically Complex Languages, Kalen Goss Manshack
Improving Automatic Summarization For Low- And Moderate-Resource, Morphologically Complex Languages, Kalen Goss Manshack
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Resource-poor, morphologically complex languages are at a disadvantage in natural language processing tasks, such as automatic text summarization or machine translation, due to the shortage of quality linguistic data available in these languages. Recently, researchers have introduced a language-independent, centroid-based method for automatic text summarization which garnered international attention for its success. This thesis explores methods for improving Rossiello et al.’s summarization approach on resource-poor, morphologically complex languages by implementing additional preprocessing steps on the data. Thereafter, stemming is shown to marginally improve research benchmark ROUGE scores for summarizations in German, a relative morphologically complex language, as well as in …
Deviance And The Divine Madness, Jeremy Dubhrós
Deviance And The Divine Madness, Jeremy Dubhrós
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Society is governed by a set of social norms and schemas. Deviance, or transgressing these values, usually results in a loss of social status or even possible stigma. However, there are situations where the transgression does not negatively impact social status and may at times actually increase prestige and social power. Plato describes several such examples where the individual had abandoned rationality and should be considered insane, but where that madness was ultimately beneficial. He separated these forms of madness from ‘common’ madness caused by disease and argued that they were divinely inspired. Though often viewed in a classic context, …

The traditional computer mouse is unable to provide as high a level of productivity and efficiency in workflow for three-dimensional virtual objects as it provides for twodimensional virtual objects. With the rise in three-dimensional virtual objects in Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies, the need for a more user-friendly and convenient user interface device is now an inescapable necessity. ‘GloveLet’ is a wearable glove that is designed to be used as a user interface device for three-dimensional as well as two-dimensional object movements. It is conceptualized to be lightweight, comfortable and able to be used in work for long periods of …

Implementing Project-Based Learning: The Effects Of Standardization In A Texas Middle School, Misbah Ahmed
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This study examined project-based learning, a teaching methodology that requires students to work collaboratively in order to solve an authentic, real-world problem that is driven by inquiry. Of particular interest was the relationship between the implementation of project-based learning and standardization. Due to the student-driven nature of project- based learning, the methodology contains many instructional components and requires a great a deal of planning from teachers. This can pose a challenge to teachers in an era in which standardized testing is a primary focus in schools and teachers must manage benchmark testing and test preparation, in addition to day-to-day instructional …
The Impact Of Mentoring On Life Science Undergraduate Mentors, Kari Nelson
The Impact Of Mentoring On Life Science Undergraduate Mentors, Kari Nelson
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Universities are increasingly encouraging their undergraduates to become mentors to others, yet relatively little research has been done to empirically understand the impact of this work on the mentors themselves. Therefore, the overall goals of this work were: (1) To evaluate the types of studies that have been conducted on the impacts of serving as an undergraduate mentor; (2) To examine the methodological rigor of recent studies and make recommendations for improvement; and (3) To asses if serving as an undergraduate mentor impacted the critical thinking of the mentors, using a valid and reliable instrument, the California Critical Thinking Skills …

Imaging techniques have a wide array of applications in various fields of technology. One such application is medical imaging, such as the use of Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The mathematical techniques behind such imaging technologies will be discussed, such as the transformation of a given set of data representing an object into a mathematical function. This data will be transformed through as Radon transform that shows certain characteristics of a set of data in terms of two variables that completely describe the data set. However, the Radon transform only transfers the data into a sinusoidal …

The Modeling, Optimization, Printing, And Testing Of Thin-Walled Fused Depositioned Aircraft, Nicholas Lira
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The production of a 3D printed aircraft requires a procedural design and testing process to guarantee reliable manufacturing. To begin, an aircraft model is created in Computer Aided Design (CAD) software or selected from available sources. In this study, a DG-1 Version 2 model was chosen from OpenVSP, then the responsibility of production for the fuselage and wing sections were divided up into two teams. AeroSpac3D took on the fuselage, and DS Wingsquad worked on the wings. After model selection, the next step was to optimize a stiffening structure for each section in ALTAIR Hyperworks to resist forces defined by …
Teaching And Learning Science In The 21st Century: Challenging Critical Assumptions In Post-Secondary Science, Amanda L. Glaze
Teaching And Learning Science In The 21st Century: Challenging Critical Assumptions In Post-Secondary Science, Amanda L. Glaze
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
It is widely agreed upon that the goal of science education is building a scientifically literate society. Although there are a range of definitions for science literacy, most involve an ability to problem solve, make evidence-based decisions, and evaluate information in a manner that is logical. Unfortunately, science literacy appears to be an area where we struggle across levels of study, including with students who are majoring in the sciences in university settings. One reason for this problem is that we have opted to continue to approach teaching science in a way that fails to consider the critical assumptions that …
Reflection, Calibration And Achievement In Introductory Calculus, Taylor Kline, Rebecca Dibbs
Reflection, Calibration And Achievement In Introductory Calculus, Taylor Kline, Rebecca Dibbs
Pursue: Undergraduate Research Journal
Studies indicate that calculus acts as a filter for students entering into a STEM discipline, pushing some students to leave their field of study due to failure or disheartenment after going through the course. Since the demand for STEM-trained graduates grows, it is imperative to determine how to prevent more students from switching away from their STEM disciplines. The purpose of this project was to investigate whether the concept of calibration could increase student performance in introductory calculus in order to retain as many students as possible. This was a quasi-experimental study, conducted in calculus I and II courses, imploring …

Student, Instructor, And Observer Agreement Regarding Frequencies Of Scientific Teaching Practices Using The Measurement Instrument For Scientific Teaching-Observable (Misto), Mary F. Durham, Jennifer Knight, Emily K. Bremers, Jameson D. Defreece, Alex R. Paine, Brian A. Couch
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: The Scientific Teaching (ST) pedagogical framework encompasses many of the best practices recommended in the literature and highlighted in national reports. Understanding the growth and impact of ST requires instruments to accurately measure the extent to which practitioners implement ST in their courses. Researchers have typically relied on students, instructors, or observers to document course teaching practices, but it remains unclear whether and how these perspectives differ from each other. To address this issue, we modified our previously published instrument to generate the Measurement Instrument for Scientific Teaching-Observable (MISTO), which can be completed by students, instructors, and observers, and …

How Do Former Undergraduate Mentors Evaluate Their Mentoring Experience 3-Years Post-Mentoring: A Phenomenological Study, Kari L. Nelson, Christine E. Cutucache
The Qualitative Report
This phenomenological study involves a unique, longitudinal assessment of the lived experiences of former undergraduate mentors (n=7) in light of their current experiences (i.e., career or advanced schooling). The objective of a phenomenological study is to engage in in-depth probing of a representative number of participants. Specifically, we followed up with graduates of the Nebraska STEM 4U (NE STEM 4U) intervention 3 years post-program, with the overall goal of describing the mentors’ experiences using the lens of their current experiences. This type of longitudinal perspective of mentoring is greatly lacking in the current literature. At the time of the interviews, …
