Smallpox Outbreaks And Immunization Policies In Tanzania From The Late Nineteenth Century To The First World War, Lorne Larson
Smallpox Outbreaks And Immunization Policies In Tanzania From The Late Nineteenth Century To The First World War, Lorne Larson
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
An estimated 300 million people died globally from smallpox in the 20th century alone. There was very much a North/South divide in the existence of the disease in that period, with countries across South America, Africa and Asia recording the majority of cases. In 1966 the World Health Organization launched an intensive effort to finally eliminate the disease. The last known endemic case of smallpox was reported in Somalia in 1977, and that outbreak was promptly contained. In 1980 smallpox was declared eradicated – the only infectious disease affecting humans to achieve this distinction. This remains among the most notable …

The Quest For The Survival And Influence Of Business Associations In A Turbulent Environment: Lessons From Tanzania, Goodluck Charles, Donath Olomi
Business Management Review
This article investigates the driving force of business associations (BAs) in their attempt to influence policy regarding political and economic governance in Tanzania. On the basis of the collective action theory, new institutional economics (NIE) and historical analysis of 21 BAs, it is evident that they are driven by the evolutionary extensions of international ecosystem capabilities, the ability of BAs' leadership to change with the government agenda, the political ideology and their experience and competence to dialogue with the government. The article contributes to the collective action theory and the NIE literature by demonstrating that BAs take collective action to …

Assessing The Potential For Tanzanian Exports In The African Continental Free Trade Area, Mesia Ilomo
Business Management Review
In 2019, the Africa Union launched the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), one of the largest pro-development regional trade arrangements (RTAs) in the world. Despite the broad promises, the potential trade benefits of AfCFTA to specific African countries is not crystal clear. We employ a gravity model and the Pseudo Poisson Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator to establish the existence, magnitude, and change of Tanzania export potential in 49 African markets. The results show existence of export potential in 38 markets, and inexistence of export potential in 11 markets. Out of 38 markets with export potential, Tanzania has high export …

The Influence Of Provision Of Public Services On Tax Compliance In Smes: Mediating Role Of Tax Morale, Menchidia Rwabunywenge, Mariamu Nchimbi, Said Juma Suluo
Business Management Review
This study investigates the relationship between the provision of public services, tax morale, and tax compliance in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania. A cross-sectional research design was employed, using a sample of 479 SMEs from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with data collected through self-administered questionnaires. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that the provision of public services has a significant positive effect on tax compliance, with tax morale acting as a partial mediator in this relationship. This suggests that taxpayers’ perceptions of the quality of public services influence their intrinsic motivation …

Sequential MK, standard normal homogeneity, and Pettitt tests were used to detect abrupt changes, while the Hurst coefficient (H) assessed future trend behavior. Results show a statistically significant increasing trend of 0.14 °C per decade, 0.18 °C …
Introduction: Failed Futures? (Post)-Colonial Planning And Future-Making In Tanzania, Ulrike Lindner
Introduction: Failed Futures? (Post)-Colonial Planning And Future-Making In Tanzania, Ulrike Lindner
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
Future-making and planning as social practices are strongly related to the
surrounding society’s political structures and power relations. In this
special issue of ZAMANI, we conceptualize future-making as physical
changes and social practices that shape future conditions by making future
an issue in the present. We analyse how different approaches to the future,
and also surprises and unintended side-effects, have informed the politics
and practices of planning in Tanzania and its various regions.1 When we ask:
“Failed Futures?” we address future in the plural, a term that has diffused
into historical scholarship rather recently and originates from
futurology/future studies, known …
‘Sold Down The River’: Histories Of Production, Trade, And Transport Along The Waterways Of The Kilombero Valley, Tanzania, Jonathan M. Jackson
‘Sold Down The River’: Histories Of Production, Trade, And Transport Along The Waterways Of The Kilombero Valley, Tanzania, Jonathan M. Jackson
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
This article considers the centrality of waterways in the Kilombero Valley of Tanzania to the region’s histories of development from above, particularly in terms of infrastructure, crop production, trade, and transport. Early colonial investigations hoped Kilombero’s riverine system might prove a navigable link from the coast to the Southern Highlands. The British colonial era instead focused more on utilising riverine networks for internal goods transport. Throughout these colonial visions – simultaneously ambitious and naïve – the prevalent dug- out canoe was considered unsafe, inefficient, and replaceable by modernised methods. But the canoe – a symbol of indigenous knowledge and practice …
Nurturing Traditional Midwifery And Medicine: The Entangled Path Of Health Integration In Post-Independence Kilombero, Tanzania, Veronica Kimani
Nurturing Traditional Midwifery And Medicine: The Entangled Path Of Health Integration In Post-Independence Kilombero, Tanzania, Veronica Kimani
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
This paper focuses on the Tanzanian government’s ambitious endeavour to enhance health, particularly midwifery services following independence. The initial strategy by the government involved promoting Western medicine by establishing healthcare facilities and training medical personnel. However, the strain of a burgeoning population and limited resources soon became evident, prompting the government to recognise the need for the incorporation of traditional medicine, previously overlooked. This integration posed its own set of obstacles, as the focus on herbal remedies overshadowed crucial aspects of conventional midwifery, such as rituals. While research has shown the resolve of the government towards medical integration between different …

Health Infrastructure Planning In Tanzania, 1961–1980s: The Problems Of Future-Making, Frank Edward, Ulrike Lindner
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
Between 1961 and 1978, Tanzania invested significantly in the health service provision – from training requisite manpower, provision of health education to building the necessary infrastructure in order to improve health conditions of the population. As existing research indicates, the investment paid off considerably in qualitative terms, for instance, with a gradual increase in life expectancy and a decline in infant mortality. This paper examines the vision of the state of health in Tanzania by using the prism of infrastructure. Its focus is on direct and indirect physical infrastructures, particularly medical buildings and facilities. Through the analysis of archival and …
Medical Mission Futures: German Protestant Missionaries And Modern Healthcare In Southern Highlands, Tanzania,1891–1940, Luoneko Kaduma
Medical Mission Futures: German Protestant Missionaries And Modern Healthcare In Southern Highlands, Tanzania,1891–1940, Luoneko Kaduma
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
The history of colonial missionaries in Tanzania is marked by a complex interplay between evangelical efforts and the provision of Western biomedicine, which functioned as crucial mechanisms for conversion and cultural transformation. Missionaries viewed the improvement of African health as a project aimed at attracting converts and propagating Christianity. However, the available data indicates that, instead of genuinely expressing interest in converting to Christianity, the majority of Africans primarily sought mission medical assistance for medical reasons while maintaining strong connections to their traditional beliefs and healing practices. This paper, drawing from archival documents, ethnographic accounts, and missionary writings, focuses on …

Does Market Accessibility Improve Household Food Security? Evidence From Small-Holder Maize Producers In Southern Tanzania, Monica Sebastian Kauky
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study investigated the impact of market accessibility on household food security among smallholder maize producers in Southern Tanzania, utilizing data from a sample of 407 households primarily engaged in maize farming. Tobit and probit models assessed the relationship between food security and market access. Contrary to expectations, the findings revealed no significant association between market access and food security. Instead, the results underscored the importance of resource availability, indicating that larger farm sizes and higher household wealth indices significantly reduce the risk of food insecurity. These findings suggest that rather than focusing exclusively on enhancing market access, policymakers should …

Ties That Bind: The Long Emancipation And Status Ambiguity In Early 20th-Century Southwestern Tanzania, Lydia (Wilson) Marshall, Thomas John Biginagwa
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications
In the 1890s, the slave and ivory trader Rashid bin Masoud established the settlement Kikole deep in what is now southwestern Tanzania. Kikole was strategically located near Lake Nyasa, a major slaving region. Masoud's followers residing at Kikole were typically referred to as his slaves by German colonists and missionaries. Local oral histories today, however, define these followers as askari (soldiers or guards) or mafundi (technicians or specialists; in this case, in using weaponry). This article considers how recent expanded excavations at Kikole can help us better understand Masoud's followers. Differences in housing investment and material access suggest status differences …

Jurnal Biostatistik, Kependudukan, dan Informatika Kesehatan
The purpose of this study is to uncover the socioeconomic and demographic factors that influence the usage of contraceptives by analysing trends and patterns in Tanzania's family planning uptake using data from national surveys. The results show that while Tanzania has made progress in increasing contraceptive prevalence from 27% in 2010 to 39% in 2021-22, disparities persist across socioeconomic and demographic lines. Women in urban areas, from higher wealth quintiles, and with higher educational attainment have significantly higher contraceptive prevalence rates compared to their counterparts. The study also reveals that the majority of women are aware of family planning methods, …

Natural Bee Space And Comb Cell Dimensions Of Honey Bee Colonies In Mwinkantsi Village, Babati District, Tanzania, Theobald J Theobald, Richard A Kidabaga, Shibonage K Mashilingi
Tanzania Journal of Science
The use of improved beehives in beekeeping is emphasized to facilitate easier colony manipulations. The improved beehives used in Tanzania are either imported or manufactured locally by adopting dimensions for European honey bees. However, the dimensions adopted are faulty to the dimensions of local honey bees, leading to problems such as cross-combing which hinder realization of the expected management advantages. This study assessed the characteristic natural bee space and comb cell dimensions of honey bee colonies occupied the traditional split log hives in Mwinkantsi village, Babati district. Results showed that honey bee colonies in Mwinkantsi village exhibited an overall bee …
Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Tanzania: Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology
Traditional gender roles have existed in Tanzania for centuries and are only now beginning to change as the country becomes increasingly globalized and more immersed in the global scene. Many studies in Tanzania focus on the lived experiences of women and women’s equality from an outsider’s perspective. Few focus on the general population’s perception of the state of gender roles and how they are changing. The city of Dar Es Salaam is uniquely exposed to external influences, being a large commercial city growing more rapidly than most cities in Africa. By using a questionnaire and the general population of Dar …

The Mediating Role Of Ifrs Implementation On The Relationship Between Cultural Dimensions And Accounting Practices Of The Multinational Companies Operating In Tanzania, Chacha Ryoba, Henry Chalu
Business Management Review
This paper examines the mediation role of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) implementation at the firm level on the influence of cultural dimensions (power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, long-term orientation, and indulgence) on accounting practices of the multinational companies (MNCs) operating in Tanzania. Data was gathered from 209 accountants, auditors, finance managers, and directors of the MNCs. Hypotheses were tested using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression based on Hayes PROCESS macro tool. The study results reveal that the IFRS implementation negatively mediates the influence of power distance and masculinity on the accounting practices of the MNCs. Conversely, the results …

Determinants Of Bank Employees ' Engagement In Asset Misappropriation In Tanzania, Juma Said Suluo, Brenda Kanisius Mayemba
Business Management Review
This study examines the determinants of employees ' engagement in asset misappropriation within the Tanzanian banking sector, drawing on the Fraud Triangle theory's elements of pressure, opportunity, and rationalization. A sample of 148 bank employees was analysed using a linear regression model. The findings revealed that opportunity emerged as the only significant predictor of asset misappropriation, indicating that when opportunities are perceived to be available, the likelihood of fraudulent behaviour increases and vice versa. However, neither pressure nor rationalization proved to have a significant influence. This research's findings have profound implications for banking institutions and regulatory bodies, highlighting the need …
