Holiday Home Owners, A Route To Sustainable Tourism Development? An Economic Analysis Of Tourist Expenditure Data, Ziene Mottiar
Holiday Home Owners, A Route To Sustainable Tourism Development? An Economic Analysis Of Tourist Expenditure Data, Ziene Mottiar
Articles
Although sustainability comprises economic social and environmental aspects, economic analysis has been less evident in this literature. This article takes an economic perspective to evaluate the contribution of holiday home owners to a local economy. Tourism destinations which are at the mature stages of the tourism lifecycle wish to maximise revenue from tourism while minimising costs such as overcrowding. A prime objective has to be to attract the more valuable tourists. The analysis of North Wexford in Ireland poses questions such as: How does the holiday home owners’ expenditure in the local area compare to that of traditional tourists? Do …

Fta And The City: Imagineering Sustainable Urban Development, John Ratcliffe, Elzbieta Krawczyk, Ruth Kelly
Articles
This paper argues that urban planners and policy-makers lack an effective future-oriented approach enabling them to comprehend current complexity, anticipate impending change and shape a preferred future condition. In doing so it: - reviews the performance of contemporary city planning; - examines the need to chart and navigate the city technosphere by reference to city capital; - explores ways in which planning can benefit from a futures studies approach; - describes generally how futures-oriented thinking can produce effective city prospective; and, - poses specifically a number of questions regarding the concept of the intelligent city’. The paper concludes by calling …
The Law Of The Lakes: From Protectionism To Sustainability, Christine A. Klein
The Law Of The Lakes: From Protectionism To Sustainability, Christine A. Klein
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article has a practical goal: to convince state lawmakers of the need to regulate in a comprehensive and evenhanded manner, avoiding short-sighted fixes or politically appealing shortcuts. To accomplish that goal, Part I focuses upon another region of the country-the Colorado River Basin-where residents have also undertaken the task of managing a water system that includes two nations(The United States and Mexico) and numerous states. Learning from the successes and failures of the resultant Law of the River, this Article derives guiding principles for the emerging Law of the Lakes. Part II makes a crucial distinction between protectionism and …

Monitoring The Relationship Between The Public And Public Lands: Application To Wilderness Stewardship In The U.S., Alan E. Watson, William T. Borrie
Society and Conservation Faculty Publications
Stakeholders in wilderness, and other public lands, have varying opinions on how well the land management agencies reflect their values and respond to their needs in management, and they therefore vary in their level of commitment and attachment to these places and the activities that occur there. Establishing baseline measures and monitoring indicators of the relationship between the public and wilderness lands can provide efficient evaluations of many management activities. Examples include protection of traditional relationships for indigenous people, and the enhancement and protection of relationships between the resource and both local and distant populations of stakeholders.

The Regulation Of Tidal Energy Development Off Nova Scotia: Navigating Foggy Waters, Meinhard Doelle, Dawn A. Russell, Phillip Saunders, David Vanderzwaag, David V. Wright
The Regulation Of Tidal Energy Development Off Nova Scotia: Navigating Foggy Waters, Meinhard Doelle, Dawn A. Russell, Phillip Saunders, David Vanderzwaag, David V. Wright
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The vast potential for tidal power development in the Bay of Fundy region of the Atlantic coast has been recognized for decades. At the same time, finding an effective way to harness this power in a cost effective, sustainable and environmentally responsible manner has been an ongoing challenge. In the 1980s, barrage based tidal power technology was piloted in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. It was found to be unsuitable from both environmental and cost perspectives.
More recently, pilot projects underway around the world are using new, open turbine technology that is expected to significantly reduce cost and environmental impact. This …
Finding Meaning In Sustainability And A Livelihood Based On Tourism: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Rural Citizens In The Aysen Region Of Chile., Trace E. Gale
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Development. Livelihood. Sustainability. Tourism. The post-positivistic approach of this study helped to illuminate the complexity that underscores these four simple words. It helped to fill knowledge gaps through exploration of the lived experience of tourism-based livelihoods within the Aysen region of southern Chile. With an understanding of this lived experience, the identification of more feasible and meaningful development interventions and policies becomes more likely. Results were organized around seven key areas of focus: (1) shaping factors for tourism-based livelihoods, (2) how tourism-based livelihood strategies added meaning, (3) the role that alternative forms of tourism played, (4) tourism livelihood tactics, (5) …
Comparative Land Use Law: Patterns Of Sustainability, John R. Nolon
Comparative Land Use Law: Patterns Of Sustainability, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Land use scholars and practitioners in the United States trace the development of domestic land use law to 1916, when the City of New York adopted the nation's first comprehensive zoning law, and then on to 1926 when the U.S. Supreme Court declared zoning constitutional in Euclid v. Ambler Realty. Some have studied European influences stemming from late nineteenth century regulations and the urban design principles imported from the great cities of the era. Others know about the catastrophic London fire of 1666 and how it transformed society's understanding of why individual property rights, to some degree, must be subject …
Selling Small And Smart: The Future Of The Sustainable Enterprise, Sandra Rothenberg
Selling Small And Smart: The Future Of The Sustainable Enterprise, Sandra Rothenberg
Books
Much of the popular management thought on sustainability focuses increasing operational efficiency and innovation of more environmentally benign products and processes. Some would argue, however, that this is not enough to become a sustainable society because it does not address levels of consumption. As a means to address reduced consumption as an important component of sustainability, this paper will outline the experiences of three companies that have adopted business models that help customers purchase less of their traditional products. Drawing lessons from the experiences of these three companies, the paper will then outline the key challenges in adopting this business …
Dwelling On Common Ground: Scientific And Family Narratives Of Change In Natural Landscapes, Damian Craniak Ph.D.
Dwelling On Common Ground: Scientific And Family Narratives Of Change In Natural Landscapes, Damian Craniak Ph.D.
Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences
Can mapping past and current changes in prairie landscapes in relation to historical shifts in human culture suggest promising directions for efforts to restore the health of grasslands and other natural communities? During the last 20,000 years the Land shifted and altered; during the past 10,000 years Life moved and migrated; and during the past 5,000 years natural and human Law has been turned and twisted to produce changes unanticipated in the history of the world. In the past 500 years these changes have quickened as we have changed ourselves from foragers into fur traders, and then into farmers, foresters, …

Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Pacific Studies
By the late twentieth century, small island states in the Pacific faced severe problems resulting from the ways in which they had become integrated into the world capitalist economy since the early nineteenth century. Generic environmental, economic, and social problems follow from dependence on the production of a relatively small number of crops for sale in the world economy, out-migration and remittances, and foreign aid. Most states have sought to reduce their dependence and to move toward greater degrees of economic self-sufficiency. In the case of atolls, opportunities for development are typically regarded as minimal because of fragile ecosystems and …

Developing Ireland As A Successful Garden Tourism Destination, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman
Developing Ireland As A Successful Garden Tourism Destination, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman
Conference papers
The marketing of Ireland as a garden destination has been evolving over the past six years. The complexity of Ireland’s history and modern circumstances have led to the demise of Irish gardens over the past three centuries. An initiative entitled The Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme has been operated under the Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-99 which has been funded by the European Union. The outcome of the scheme has been twofold; the funding has rescued a significant part of Irish heritage and history; it has provided many new comprehensive tourist attractions to both the domestic and overseas market. …

Presentations by leading experts will address the broad concept of sustainable development, with a particular look at Arizona's experience. The focus will be …
The Atlantic Canadian Groundfishery: Roots Of A Collapse, Anthony T. Charles
The Atlantic Canadian Groundfishery: Roots Of A Collapse, Anthony T. Charles
Dalhousie Law Journal
While many explanations have been proposed for the 1990s Atlantic Canadian groundfishery collapse-ranging from "natural causes" to over-fishing and damaging technologies, to failures of fishery management and science-this paper examines the possibility that underlying these, at the roots of the collapse, liae set of entrenched attitudes that have driven fishery decision making. These attitudes, about the natural world, about management and about how the fishery should function, became influential especially where they prevailed at the institutional level, as the accepted wisdom among the dominant players in government and the fishery. Four sets of conservation-related attitudes are considered, dealing with (1) …

Future Of Fishery Management And Its Impact On The Seafood Industry: A Comparison Of United States And Canadian Fishery Management Policies After Unclos Iii, Ferdinand J. Iii Gallo
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
The United States and Canadian fishery management regimes each professes to fulfill the goals of conservation enumerated under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS III). These goals include conservation of scarce fish stocks and "optimum utilization" of those limited resources. The Canadian regime of centralized authority, informality and flexibility, however, actually comes closest to fulfilling these goals. While the United States may adopt some of the key elements of the Canadian regime, several barriers exist to such reforms.Another method for reconciling the differences between U.S. and Canadian policies would include the implementation of …

A Recycling Proposal For The Vashon Island School District, John Turner Green
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify a process by which the Vashon Island School District could reduce its waste stream and involve and educate students in an environmental ethic that actively seeks to reduce and recycle wastes. A search of the general and educational literature was made. An extensive research of state and local agencies helped to identify appropriate goals and actions for the Vashon School District. The proposal calls for seven specific actions to be taken.
