In the course of the memorial exercises in honor of Justice McReynolds, held in the Supreme Court of the United States on March 31, 1948, the Attorney General made the significant statement that McReynolds was neither liberal nor conservative." This observation was made in connection with the statement that the Justice, when he was appointed to the Court, was considered a liberal, and when he left the Court, a conservative. As indicated by the title, this study presents a history of Federal Legislation against Mormon polygamy prior to 1890 and of certain United States Supreme Court decisions supporting such legislation. Of necessity, the subject had to be limited, emphasis being placed upon three legislative acts and upon a few leading court decisions.

The Supreme Court Of The Confederate States Of America, Robert W. Ferrell
Honors Theses
Much has been written about the military history of the Confederate States of America, but comparatively little has been recorded regarding the civil status of the form of government behind the armed forces. This fact might be explained in many ways, upon which however we will not endeavor to expatiate, our purpose being to investigate only one phase of the civil government which has received very little attention from historians, namely, the judicial system of the Confederate States culminating in its Supreme Court.
