Implementing Therapeutic Conflict Management Groups To Decrease Serious Incidents Of Misbehavior In A Middle School Setting, Kelvin E. Rogers

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A review of the literature indicated that there were concerns from the public and public school officials regarding too many serious acts of misbehavior being committed in our public schools, which included recent events of violence in Oregon, Colorado, and California that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries of students and staff. During the 2001-2002 school year at this writer’s site, discipline records indicated that several students were suspended off-campus for fights, verbal abuse towards their peers, weapons on campus, and gross defiance towards school authority.

In order to combat the amount of episodes of serious acts of misbehavior, 30 …

St. Anna School is a small, parochial school located in Leominster, Massachusetts. Homework is an academic requirement for all students in Grades 3 through 8. At the middle school level, Grades 6 through 8, students are given between 1 and 2 hours of homework 4 nights per week. Parents expect homework. Teachers assign homework. Students should do homework. Although parents, teachers, and students are aware of the existence of homework, students still failed to complete homework. Why did students fail to complete homework? Interviews were conducted with middle school teachers, students, and parents to find out why students failed to …

Improving Reading Achievement By Reviewing And Adopting A Kindergarten-Grade 6 Balanced Reading Program, Rodney L. Borger

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation describes a process of reviewing and adopting a kindergarten-Grade 6 reading program in a Pennsylvania suburban school district with a student population of approximately 3,800. An analysis of the district’s 5th-grade reading scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 1997, indicated that for the years 1997–2000, district mean scores were 50 to 70 points lower than the mean score of schools of similar community type and socioeconomic characteristics.

Planned solution strategies included (a) reviewing and evaluating recently published reading programs, (b) revising the district’s reading curriculum to be …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Roland Park K-8 School of Choice is a school in Hillsborough County in Tampa, Florida. The problem was that there had been a dramatic increase in discipline referrals and suspensions at Roland Park School from December 2001 to December 2002. This increase was apparent when the discipline logs and The School Improvement Team (SIT) plan were observed. The discipline logs and SIT plan demonstrated a sharp rise of 42% more referrals and suspensions at the school site from 2001 to 2002. Leaders needed to be on the same page when handling discipline and other behaviors across the school organization.

Implementing A Preschool Program In A Rural School District, Elden Daniel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This dissertation describes the challenges of the implementation of the Miami/Yoder Preschool in a small rural school district. The lack of reading skills as reflected in Colorado state testing was a concern. Inadequate reading readiness among students entering Kindergarten was identified as a factor. There were no preschool education opportunities available in the community.

The implementation of a preschool was achieved through financial resources from a Human Services Family Literacy Grant, the Colorado Preschool Program, District funds and tuition. The human resources include school staff, parents and community members.

The preschool was successfully implemented in September. The program had an …

Methods Of Improving The Reading Comprehension Skills Of Seventh-Grade Literacy Students, Mellanie L. Robinson Jan 2003

Methods Of Improving The Reading Comprehension Skills Of Seventh-Grade Literacy Students, Mellanie L. Robinson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to improve the reading comprehension skills of seventh-grade students. A majority of the students in the writer’s literacy class scored poorly on the following reading comprehension instruments: the Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading (STAR), the Science Research Associates test (SRA), and a reading selection from the Jamestown Signature Reading Series. Failure to succeed on these tests can be discouraging for adolescents and can cause them to develop negative attitudes towards the concept of reading as a whole.

For several months, the writer read multitudinous pieces of educational literature from credible sources (e.g., Middle …

Improving Reading Scores In A Low-Socioeconomic Environment, Bessie Karvelas

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide a better understanding of the reasons why Von Humboldt School has had a history of low reading scores. The school has a high mobility rate, which has made it difficult for any academic continuity. The students at the school are at a 94% poverty level with 64% Hispanic, 34% African American, and 2% Caucasian. The low-socioeconomic status of the students partially contributes to the low reading scores. There are other factors as well. The training that teachers had received in teaching reading also attributed to the low scores. Not enough time spent on …

The amount of student-reported harassment was greater in the freshman and sophomore years and diminished in the junior and senior years. A survey taken in October 2002 for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges’ self-study indicated that 90% of the 138 respondents do not feel respected …

The Development And Validation Of The Ethical Climate Index For Middle And High Schools, Laura E. Schulte, Franklin Titus Thompson, Jeanie Talbott, Ann Luther, Michelle Garcia, Shirley Blanchard, Laraine Conway, Melanie Mueller

Counseling Faculty Publications

One school characteristic that needs to be considered as important in keeping schools safe is school climate. The purposes of this study were to develop and validate an instrument that measures the ethical climate of middle and high schools. To create the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI), we adapted the Ethical Climate Index for graduate and professional school programs to apply to middle and high schools. The SECI measures a school’s sense of community by assessing student and teacher interactions and relationships through the application of five ethical principles: respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity. To provide evidence …
