Towards Supporting Academic Authors, Researchers And Phd Students In Higher Education, Eileen O'Donnell, Liam O'Donnell Jan 2019

Towards Supporting Academic Authors, Researchers And Phd Students In Higher Education, Eileen O'Donnell, Liam O'Donnell

Books/Book Chapters

Academic authors, researchers, PhD, Doctoral, and Master’s students, write articles for journals, books, book chapters for inclusion in edited books, papers for conferences and conference proceedings, and so forth as a method of communicating and sharing scholarly research findings. This chapter reviews the supports necessary to learn how to effectively undertake research and successfully publish the findings. These supports could satisfactorily be provided through an e-learning portal or an e-learning platform. An e-learning module could be used to facilitate collaboration amongst staff, researchers, PhD, and post graduate students, who share similar research interests. Staff and students should be encouraged to …

Three-Year Health-Related Fitness Knowledge Growth In One Curriculum Context: Impact Of Sociodemographic Factors, Xihe Zhu, Justin A. Haegele Jan 2019

Three-Year Health-Related Fitness Knowledge Growth In One Curriculum Context: Impact Of Sociodemographic Factors, Xihe Zhu, Justin A. Haegele

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: This study aims to (a) examine elementary school students' health-related fitness knowledge growth under one curriculum condition and (b) examine the impacts of student/school-level factors on health-related fitness knowledge and its growth rate in physical education. Method: We used an observational, longitudinal repeated-measures design, and conducted analyses on an existing dataset. Participants were 7,479 third, fourth, and fifth graders (48.9% girls) from 152 elementary schools. Measures were a knowledge test and sex at the student level, and socioeconomic data, academic performance, and student–faculty ratio at the school level. We ran three-level hierarchical linear models on the data. Results: Fitness …

Perceptions Of Assessment In Norwegian Occupational Therapy Students, Tore Bonsaksen, Astrid Gramstad, Gry Mørk, Susanne G. Johnson Jan 2019

Perceptions Of Assessment In Norwegian Occupational Therapy Students, Tore Bonsaksen, Astrid Gramstad, Gry Mørk, Susanne G. Johnson

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

In addition to securing minimum standards of learning among students, assessment is increasingly used as a tool to improve students’ learning. Assessment quality is measured as part of the Course Experience Questionnaire; however, the original ‘appropriate assessment’ scale has demonstrated ambiguous psychometric properties. The current study aimed to gain knowledge about occupational therapy students’ perceptions of assessment, and this was achieved by examining the factor structure and internal consistency of the six items on the ‘appropriate assessment’ scale. Students from six Norwegian universities (n = 187, response rate 61.3 %) completed the scale and reported demographic information. The factor …

Assessing The Grit And Mindset Of Incoming Engineering Students With An Emphasis On Gender, Ines Direito, Shannon Chance, Emanuela Tilley, John Mitchell Jan 2019

Assessing The Grit And Mindset Of Incoming Engineering Students With An Emphasis On Gender, Ines Direito, Shannon Chance, Emanuela Tilley, John Mitchell

Conference papers

Engineering programs can be very demanding, particularly in the first years where students encounter new forms of highly challenging coursework. To better prepare and support students, educators must acknowledge non-academic factors, such as the role of self-beliefs and personal attributes. Education research suggests that students are more likely to give up and disengage from their studies when they lack grit or assume a fixed mindset. Previous studies suggest that female students are generally grittier but less confident when compared to male students. This paper presents the initial work of an ongoing study to explore self-confidence and motivations to study engineering …

A Study Of Saudi Teachers And Students Attitudes Toward The Use Of Esp At A Saudi Military Academy, Sulaiman Rashed Algofaili Jan 2019

A Study Of Saudi Teachers And Students Attitudes Toward The Use Of Esp At A Saudi Military Academy, Sulaiman Rashed Algofaili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes address the specific professional and technical fields of students learning English and attempt to use appropriate materials and approaches to do so. At the King Abdulaziz Military Academy (KAMA) in Saudi Arabia, ESP classes prepare students for military careers. However, officers who graduate from KAMA notice that their level of English is lower than that required to command non- Arabic speakers, and they struggle in communicating with others in English. The reason behind the students low competence at KAMA is still not clear but could result from the choice of approaches or texts used …

Unintended Policy Practices : A Review Of Student Affairs Supervisory Practices Based On Work-Study Status Within The State University Of New York System, Jessica Krupski Jan 2019

Unintended Policy Practices : A Review Of Student Affairs Supervisory Practices Based On Work-Study Status Within The State University Of New York System, Jessica Krupski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the potential differences between how work-study and non-work-study student employees are trained, professionally developed, and evaluated in Student Affairs departments within the State University of New York System during the spring of 2019. The significance and contribution of this study is in the fact that there is not a statistically significant difference between the supervisory practices based on work-study status, yet, the data shows how the field can make improvements on the student employee experience as a whole, regardless of student employee type.

Predictors Of Teacher-Rated Academic Competence In A Clinic Sample Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anna Milgramm Jan 2019

Predictors Of Teacher-Rated Academic Competence In A Clinic Sample Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anna Milgramm

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The rising prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), both in the general population and within the classroom, necessitates a greater understanding of the academic experience of diagnosed children. Prior studies that have examined academic competence in children with ASD have largely relied on clinician-administered tests of achievement. The present study extends previous work by investigating several predictors of teacher-rated academic competence among a sample of elementary school-aged children. All children in the sample were referred for an ASD evaluation and approximately half received the diagnosis. With the exception of assertion, teachers did not perceive differences between the social skills, problem …

Outcomes Of The Student Mentoring And Research Training (Smart) Program, Nazmul Islam, Amy A. Weimer Jan 2019

Outcomes Of The Student Mentoring And Research Training (Smart) Program, Nazmul Islam, Amy A. Weimer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Engaging undergraduate students in research not only improves discipline-specific knowledge and skillsets, but also exposes them to increased research-related career paths, and motivates their pursuit of graduate study. With an interest in increasing these outcomes among students, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) developed the Student Mentoring and Research Training (SMART) program. The primary objective of the program was to provide an increasing number of undergraduate student (UG) research opportunities by building triadic teams comprised of (1) a faculty mentor, (2) a graduate student assistant, and (3) at least three undergraduate students. By utilizing graduate student mentors, in …
