Evaluating The Use Of An Interdependent Group Contingency In Online Graduate Courses To Increase Engagement, Tiana Evans
Evaluating The Use Of An Interdependent Group Contingency In Online Graduate Courses To Increase Engagement, Tiana Evans
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Enrollment in online academic programs has increased substantially in recent years (Allen & Seaman, 2011) and is especially relevant due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Khalil et al., 2020). Peer interaction and engagement opportunities are strategies associated with course satisfaction, test performance, and grades and should be incorporated into online courses (Conaway et al. 2005). Group contingencies have been commonly studied in face-to-face classrooms and have been found to be effective intervention in changing target behavior in elementary and secondary education settings (Barrish et al., 1969; Deshais et al., 2019; Harris & Sherman, 1973; Mitchell et al. 2015; Wiskow et al., …

Combining Self-Care Strategies And Principles Of Adult Learning: Supporting Rn-To-Bsn Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Christine R. Espina, William Lonneman
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
In the early phases of COVID-19, faculty adjusted assignments to support and center RN-to-BSN students as practicing nurses. This presentation will discuss how faculty combined theory-guided self-care strategies and principles of adult learning to strengthen the learning community as a source of strength and support for working nurses in COVID-19.

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
The aim of this interactive workshop for educators and administrators is to promote cultural awareness and reflect on the impact that our own cultural influences have on the teaching and learning process. This interactive session will also allow professional educators and leaders to apply culturally informed practices to foster positive school climate, learning and academic achievement relevant to a widely diverse student population. The workshop strives to encourage dialogue between educators, administrators and interdisciplinary/inter-agency team members through the application of evidence-based practices for the development of a deeper understanding of ourselves and how our views impact on students’ academic achievement, …

METHODS: Students (21.9 +4.1 years of age) referred by university health and counseling services completed a 20-item questionnaire, which included the “Barriers to Being Active” quiz, an assessment of SOC (e.g., precontemplation), and students’ self-reported gender. Reason for referral (RFR), which was provided by a health practitioner, was categorized as Obesity, Anxiety/Depression, General PA, Unspecified or Other. RESULTS: A …

The Lost Promise Of Disability Rights, Claire Raj
The Lost Promise Of Disability Rights, Claire Raj
Michigan Law Review
Children with disabilities are among the most vulnerable students in public schools. They are the most likely to be bullied, harassed, restrained, or segregated. For these and other reasons, they also have the poorest academic outcomes. Overcoming these challenges requires full use of the laws enacted to protect these students’ affirmative right to equal access and an environment free from discrimination. Yet, courts routinely deny their access to two such laws—the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (section 504).
Courts too often overlook the affirmative obligations contained in these two disability rights …

“Natural” Sunscreens Although More Expensive Are Not More Effective At Preventing Uv Exposure, Tara Lunsford, Alanna L. Lecher, Cassandra S. Korte
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer within humans, has approximately 3.5 million cases each year. The evidence supports that the use of sunscreen can help to prevent different forms of skin cancers. There are a multitude of brands that make sunscreen, each claiming to be better than the next. The two main types of sunscreen are physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens deflect the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun and are normally made of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, whereas chemical sunscreen absorb the suns UV rays and can be composed of many different ingredients. It was hypothesized …

A Critical Look At The Failure Of Mainstream Economics, Joseph M. Dipoli

Foundations of real-world economics: What every economics student needs to know (2nd ed.), by John Komlos, New York, Routledge, 2019, 306 pp., $42.95 (Paperback), ISBN 9781138296541.
Many people in the United States of America are dissatisfied with the outcomes of the economy and some are suggesting measures that seem socialistic. The time has come to recognize that mainstream economics as taught in our schools is not serving students at all. The research sharing platform of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA) states that John Komlos’s textbook Foundations of Real-World Economics: What Every Economics Student Needs to …
Does Crispr Gene Silencing Phenocopy Exposure To Phthalates In Drosophila?, Hailey Meagher, Kimberly D. Rowland
Does Crispr Gene Silencing Phenocopy Exposure To Phthalates In Drosophila?, Hailey Meagher, Kimberly D. Rowland
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Our research group is interested in studying the effects of phthalate exposure on the Drosophila model. According to the literature, the Akh gene are disrupted by exposure to phthalates, which disrupts insulin-signaling (Williams et all., 2016). Our molecular biology lab recently performed CRISPR experiment (BioRad, 12012608EDU). We hypothesize that if we disrupt the same insulin signaling gene using CRISPR, we will not phenocopy the phthalate exposure results. CRISPR Cas9 is an advanced gene editing tool, that allows the detection and disruption of a target sequence in DNA. Biorad CRISPR experiment uses E. coli to demonstrate what happens when the X-gal …
United States Firearm Mortality Rate As Influenced By Gun Carry Laws And Contributing Factors, Jayden N. Reece, Alanna L. Lecher
United States Firearm Mortality Rate As Influenced By Gun Carry Laws And Contributing Factors, Jayden N. Reece, Alanna L. Lecher
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
I will be discussing firearm mortality within the United States, how gun-carry laws effect the rate of gun violence, as well as what factors influence firearm mortality. The data was collected from government databases such as the CDC and the Census Bureau for 2005 and 2014-2018. An analysis was first conducted based on the states' gun-carry laws and its effect on firearm mortality. The 50 states were divided into the gun-carry laws recognized by the United States open carry with no permit required, open carry with permit required, concealed carry with permit required, and open carry with permit required and …
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Retrieval practice is a well-researched cognitive strategy for improving memory for target information. A substantial amount of empirical research from several decades shows that retrieval practice has a positive effect on long-term retention of information. The current study aims to assess the effects of review activities using retrieval practice on long-term retention of course materials, and to examine their effect on test anxiety. Although some research has examined the impact of retrieval practice in course settings, there have been few controlled experiments and little research looking at the impacts on test anxiety. A multi-session exam review activity will be administered …

Schools have been the main context for physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) interventions among adolescents, but there is inconsistent evidence on whether they also improve dimensions of the health−related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a school-based active lifestyle intervention on dimensions of HRQoL. A secondary aim was to verify whether sex, age, and HRQoL at baseline were moderators of the intervention effect. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted at three control and three intervention schools in Florianopolis, Brazil. All students from 7th to 9th grade were invited to …
