Considering The Social-Emotional Well-Being Of Multilingual Learners: A Comparative Case Study Across Program Models, Amy J. Heineke, Elizabeth M. Vera, Wenjin Guo, Joseph Kaye, Joseph Elliott

This multiple-case study probes the social-emotional well-being of elementary and middle-grade students labeled as English learners who were enrolled in different bilingual program models in the midwestern United States. Using ecological systems theory, this qualitative study probes students’ social-emotional well-being across schools and within different bilingual program models, seeking to determine the structures and practices that nurture positive facets or perpetuate negative facets of student well-being. Findings indicate that interactions with peers and adults in schools influence students’ social-emotional well-being, with program-model variations, community demographics, and societal discourse shaping these in-school experiences, relationships, and sentiments. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 prompted higher education institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to switch to online learning for the safety of their citizens. The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between four indicators of digital learning experience and the intensity of student socio-pedagogical communication after the transition to distance learning. The data were collected from Ajman University, a private university in the UAE, during the spring of 2020. The sample consisted of 381 students who were surveyed using an online survey tool or email. This study commenced as part of a more extensive narrative inquiry about a literacy coach building relationships with two early-career sixth-grade English language arts teachers. The more extensive study revealed a gap in research about the teachers' beliefs and practices and their impact on their students' academic and emotional success. The research questions are: (1) in what ways do two teachers' beliefs and professional knowledge influence their teaching philosophies? (2) How do these teachers' identities influence student outcomes? The two teacher participants took part in interviews, observations, and reflections. Plasticizing additives such as phthalates, are known to cause disruptions in human nervous systems linked to neurological disorders, thus with the Drosophila activity monitoring (DAM) system test can be conducted to consider whether the flies are exhibiting hyperactivity (Hlisníková et al., 2021). Drosophila is a useful model for exposure of metabolic compounds followed by general and specific assays of their effects. This project aims to empower young girls and women who have never been told, “you can do it too.” In order to fight gender disparity in the workforce, I have created a book that collects various biographies of successful women in STEM. The book is entirely in Spanish, as my goal is to reach young girls and women, specifically from Hispanic countries in North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Nicotine is a very common substance: it is a plant-produced pesticide and is frequently used as a stimulant for humans. It is toxic at high doses and can cause nicotine poisoning, which is harmful for humans and lethal in flies (Velazquez-Ulloa, 2017). Experiments have identified that nicotine exposure affects the TRPA1 chemosensory cation channel (Talavera et al., 2016; Kang et al., 2010). Previously, student data has shown that nicotine exposure extends the lifespan of TRPA1 mutant flies compared to a control group of wild type flies. Calcium is important for the contraction of muscles, neurotransmission, and signaling in animals. Like other active movers, invertebrate planarian flatworms have musculature for motility. Therefore, it can be inferred that without the proper concentration of calcium ions in the water they can’t undulate or extend the pharynx, a muscular feeding structure. Planaria are generally cultured at a 0.5 g/L concentration of instant ocean sea salt (IOS), which contains calcium ion of 0.126 mM. However, there is uncertainty in the concentrations of important ions, such as calcium, which are optimal for the maintenance and homeostasis of the planaria. Previous research on …

In this archeological study of a shell midden, we evaluate possible environmental and cultural changes that occurred through time by performing a quantitative analysis of shell artifacts of Giant False Donax (Iphigenia brasiliana) and Common Atlantic Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) collected from the shell midden. Middens are archeological trash sites used by researchers to identify artifacts used by past populations to understand their behaviors. Fire model systems hold great value in helping figure out what happened during a fire, how a fire could have been prevented, or how a hypothetical fire would behave. This is important in both reconstructing a fire and preventing fires in buildings. Spreadsheet models calculate mathematical solutions for inputted conditions including the type of material ignited. Research suggests a moderate incidence of depression, anxiety, and especially stress among college students (Ramon-Arbues et al., 2020). It is reasonable to believe that these mental health outcomes might be inversely correlated with resilience, the ability to adapt to new challenges. In this study, we hypothesize an inverse correlation between resilience (as measured by the self-reported BRS-6) and stress, anxiety, and depression (as measured by the DASS-21). Caffeine is a chemical substance that is a component in many beverages that are a part of so many people’s daily routines. Its chemical formula is C₈ H₁₀N₄ O₂ and it can be naturally sourced through a variety of plants. Because an excessive consumption of caffeine (greater than 400 mg a day) can lead to serious health complications, it is important to be aware of how much caffeine is in different caffeinated beverages. Many commercially available kombucha products instruct to keep the bottle refrigerated. Kombucha contains probiotic bacteria. Bacteria are known to proliferate at different temperatures. Thus, we hypothesized that the warmer the temperature of kombucha storage the more bacteria growth there would be. Kombucha was stored at different temperatures and bacteria growth was recorded. Three bottles of kombucha were used in the experiment and each was put into their respective temperature zones. The first bottle, the control, was stored in a refrigerated area at 4°C, since kombucha is recommended to be stored in cold temperatures for safe consumption. The second bottle was …
