Teaching Archival Research Methods Through Projects In Ethnohistory, Veronica L. Denison, Alyssa Willett, Alexandra Taitt, Medeia Csoba Dehass

During the spring semester of 2015 and the fall semester of 2016, two cohorts of students at the University of Alaska Anchorage learned archival research skills as part of their methodological training in the course, Ethnohistory of Alaska Natives, which subsequently led to the development of further individual research projects. As part of the course, students provided metadata to folders within an archival collection. This article explores the semester long projects, including the hardships of finding and using culturally appropriate metadata, lessons learned, and the impact the project had on students, the archivist, and instructor.

This study analyzes the effects of COVID-19 on students at the University of Mississippi. For students, COVID-19 changed the landscape of education, with classes and jobs going online. Students who graduated in May 2020 entered a poor job market and many ended up going to graduate school instead of finding a job. Access to medical and professional help was limited at the very beginning, with offices not taking patients or moving appointments to virtual only. This would require that each student needing help had to have access to quality internet service, which wasn’t always guaranteed, thus producing additional challenges.

The concept known as “social isolation” is a problem that affects many people, but there are certain populations that do not have adequate research performed on them. Specifically, college students face a risk of social isolation that is detrimental to their well-being and academic success, and there is a gap in the literature about this relationship. This study explored the prevalence of social isolation in college students at a Christian college in West Texas and examined various factors to determine whether any protective factors or at-risk factors existed. A qualitative case study was conducted to examine ways to increase the use of disability services at 4-year universities. Individual interviews were conducted to see how students and staff members felt the use of disability services could be improved. Five students with nonvisible disabilities and four disability and student services staff members participated in the study. Interviews focused on transition, use of campus services, self-advocacy, and knowledge of disability services. A thematic analysis was conducted on the data, and a total of 20 themes were derived from the interviews. Themes focused on the following topics: self-identification is personal, faculty attitude …

Pre-Departure Training Is Essential For Preparing Healthcare Teams For Service-Learning To Resource-Limited Countries, Suzanne Fox Trotter

Introduction: Limited research exists on effective pre-departure training (PDT) for interprofessional healthcare disciplines participating in international service-learning (ISL), particularly to resource-limited settings.

Method: A convenience sample of 21 physical and occupational therapy students and clinicians who participated in four 1-hour PDT sessions were included in this mixed-methods study. Training consisted of informative, reflective, and simulation experiences to enhance self-awareness, teambuilding, cultural knowledge, and in support of trip preparations. Training session debriefings were transcribed and coded. The Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAITM) was administered pre-training and post-experience.

Results: Qualitative data showed emerging themes around collaboration, mentorship, empowerment, opportunity, preparedness, self-awareness, and confidence …

Our research group is interested in studying the effects of phthalate exposure on the Drosophila model. According to the literature, the Akh gene are disrupted by exposure to phthalates, which disrupts insulin-signaling (Williams et all., 2016). Our molecular biology lab recently performed CRISPR experiment (BioRad, 12012608EDU). We hypothesize that if we disrupt the same insulin signaling gene using CRISPR, we will not phenocopy the phthalate exposure results. CRISPR Cas9 is an advanced gene editing tool, that allows the detection and disruption of a target sequence in DNA. Biorad CRISPR experiment uses E. coli to demonstrate what happens when the X-gal …

Retrieval practice is a well-researched cognitive strategy for improving memory for target information. A substantial amount of empirical research from several decades shows that retrieval practice has a positive effect on long-term retention of information. The current study aims to assess the effects of review activities using retrieval practice on long-term retention of course materials, and to examine their effect on test anxiety. Although some research has examined the impact of retrieval practice in course settings, there have been few controlled experiments and little research looking at the impacts on test anxiety. The purpose of this study has been to investigate the impact of a well-being intervention, using a well-being curriculum, known as A. B.A.L.A.N.C.E.. The method of educational criticism and connoisseurship was used as the qualitative method. Educational criticism is rooted in the process of expressing the specific qualities of one’s observations, while educational connoisseurship is rooted in the process of appreciation. The intervention will be conducted by an interventionist, myself, who gave the 10-lesson intervention to six 6th grade (11 – 12 years old) participants over a two-week period.
