Silence In The Kitchen: How Students Innovated And Created Despite Covid-19., Anna Cruickshank, Pauline Danaher
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
The COVID-19 lockdown has changed the educational landscape forever; everything that we thought we could not do online, it turned out we could. When the Irish Government announced that all third-level educational institutes were to close in March 2020 and that lecturers would move theory-based lectures online, it seemed a daunting challenge. Most lecturing staff had little experience of lecturing with online platforms and no time to prepare the students for new ways of working and attending class. Little did we know that twelve months later, as the crisis raged on, that an even bigger decision had to be grappled …
Community College Stigma And Its Effect On Illinois High School Seniors’ College Choice, Bradley S. Griffith
Community College Stigma And Its Effect On Illinois High School Seniors’ College Choice, Bradley S. Griffith
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore community college stigma and how it affects college choice for high school seniors in the state of Illinois. Community colleges nationwide are facing significant challenges such as enrollment decline, funding cutbacks, and declining birth rates. In order to effectively combat these challenges, community college leaders must be fully cognizant of any barriers preventing prospective students from attending the 2-year institutions. Community college stigma has recently gained national attention through various higher education publications but has been rarely researched in previous studies. This mixed methods study distributed surveys to 27 high schools varying …

Prior models of well-being have focused on resolving issues at different levels within a single institution. Changes over time in medicine have resulted in massive turnover and reduced clinical hours that portray a deficit-oriented system. As developments to improve purpose and professional satisfaction emerge, the Texas Medical Association Committee on Physician Health and Wellness (PHW) is committed to providing the vehicle for a statewide collaboration and illuminating the path forward. To describe the existing health and wellness resources in Texas academic medical centers and understand the gaps in resources and strategies for addressing the health and wellness needs in the medical …
On The Meritocratic Allocation Of Higher Education, Zachary Bleemer
On The Meritocratic Allocation Of Higher Education, Zachary Bleemer
Dissertation Awards
Access to higher education is a key determinant of lifetime earnings in the United States. Since the 1960s, selective public universities have admitted students mostly on the basis of standardized test scores and other measures of academic preparation, on the theory that highly prepared students can best take advantage of universities’ rigorous curricula. I employ quasi-experimental and structural research designs to investigate the efficiency and economic mobility ramifications of these “meritocratic” admissions policies. This dissertation presents a collage of evidence from three educational allocation policies suggesting that the reallocation of selective higher education to disadvantaged students with relatively poorer measured …

Filipinx/A/O-American College Students And Mental Health, Gabi Sicat
Sociology - Independent Research
Filipinx/a/o-Americans are the second largest Asian American population yet are often underrepresented in research studies and media, while predominantly East Asians remain the center focus. Issues and experiences of subpopulations within minority groups are often overshadowed by the dominant group and essentially erased. Therefore, disaggregating data persists as an important way to understand the differences between subgroups and to ultimately create effective strategies to remediate these inequities. This current study looks to further examine the research question: What experiences shape Filipinx/a/o-American college students’ mental health? Specifically how does family, religion, immigration, racial stereotypes (e.g., model minority myth), and acculturation at …

Users’ Satisfaction On Sc/St Book Bank Scheme Through Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis, Kutty Kumar Dr, Kutty Kumar Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Ordinal Logistic Regression (OLR) is used to predict an ordinal structured variable given one or more independent variables. In this study, OLR used to decide the level of satisfaction on SC/ST book bank scheme (ordinal independent variable), measured on a five-point Likert type scale from “completely dissatisfied-1 through completely satisfied-5, depending on the discernment of ‘life science’ and ‘engineering students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) or Tribe (ST)’. Model appropriateness depends on determining which explanatory variables considered for the model and selecting the link function (complementary log-log link function used in this study). Likewise, the model fitting perceptions, the accuracy …

Factors Influencing Student Retention At A Rural Institution In The Southeast, Angela May Jowers
College of Education
For institutions serving rural students, retention must be a priority. This quantitative, descriptive comparative study examined the existence of a relationship between types of services accessed by rural students ( tutoring, peer mentoring, and centralized advising) and their retention, and the number of accessed services and retention. The study also examined an association between a sense of belonging and support services accessed by students. Vincent Tinto's (1975; 1993) Social Integration Theory and Bean and Eaton's (2000) Psychological Model of Student Retention provided the theoretical framework for this study. The records of 486 students who participated in one or more of …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the U.S. xenophobia has been on the rise and current immigration policies have increased the occurrence of family separation. Experiences with family separation profoundly impact children and have a detrimental effect on their development and educational outcomes. However, limited research has been conducted exploring the long-term impacts of family separation on education, particularly as it relates to Latinx tender-age children (below the age of twelve). In the current political climate, Latinx children are precariously positioned to live under the constant threat of family separation due to anti-immigrant policies and xenophobic school climates. This hostile environment can have devastating effects …

Exploring The Prevalence Of Social Isolation In Students At A Christian College In West Texas, David Bryan Elliott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept known as “social isolation” is a problem that affects many people, but there are certain populations that do not have adequate research performed on them. Specifically, college students face a risk of social isolation that is detrimental to their well-being and academic success, and there is a gap in the literature about this relationship. This study explored the prevalence of social isolation in college students at a Christian college in West Texas and examined various factors to determine whether any protective factors or at-risk factors existed. An online survey was sent out that used 11 demographic factor questions …

Human Performance and Sport Sciences faculty Research
Objectives
The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of overweight/obesity and to explore sex differences in body weight perceptions and correlates of weight gain among Black students at 2 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the USA.Methods
Participants completed a paper-based survey, and their height and weight were measured (67% completion rate). Results
The overweight and obesity rates were 33.8% and 26.9%, respectively. More females than males accurately assessed their weight (p<0.05). Body weight underestimation was associated with male sex, excellent/very good perceived overall health, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.01). Higher odds of ≥5% weight gain were related to female sex, living on campus, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.05).Conclusion
Given the high overweight and obesity rates among Black students, HBCUs in the USA should develop intervention strategies for …0.05).>0.01).>0.05).>Twice As Nice: Martha Grace Mize Is First Person To Earn Dual Master's Degrees In Southern Studies And Anthropology, Rebecca Lauck Cleary

Higher Education Under Market Forces How The "Transnational Shadow Education" Industry Emerged And Persisted To Help Taiwanese Students To Study In The U.S, Kenneth Han Chen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
My dissertation examines the marketization of higher education, drawing on empirical case studies from Taiwanese students using “education agents” to apply to U.S. colleges and universities. I argue that without these intermediary agents, applicants and parents may be left flying blindly amid uncertainties, emotional distress, and interpersonal tension in families during children’s admission. The existing sociological literature and higher education research mainly concentrates on studying national policies and formal higher education institutions (universities and research institutes), but the private market research is relatively insufficient. Also, the research on international students' transnational movement mostly started from the viewpoint of the students' …

The Prevalence Of E-Cigarette Use According To Educational Attainment Among Young Adults In The Population Assessment Of Tobacco And Health (Path) Study, Akhila Cheekati
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Prior studies indicate a link between poor academic performance and e-cigarette use in high school students (18 years and below). However, the effect of post high school education on e-cigarette use is poorly summarized in literature.
The objective of the current study was to determine if there was a difference in prevalence of past 30-day e-cigarette use in a national sample of young adults due to different educational levels. Four groups of young adults were studied based on their level of education: High School Dropouts, High School Graduates/GED, Current College Students, and College Graduates. Data from the Population Assessment of …
