The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1991-01-25, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 1991-2000
On the first page of this edition of the newspaper is an article on the subject of two students called to active duty in the Middle East. Students Todd Musgrove and Matthew Matheney received official notices calling them to action. On the Viewpoints page, a page of opinion pieces written by students not associated with the Voice, there are numerous small articles and a political cartoon about the president. Later in the paper there is a large article on the international student's views on the war. The majority of the paper focuses on the war and opinions on civil disobedience. …

Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller
Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller
Honors Theses
Seventy-two undergraduates (ages 18-23) from The University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University participated in this study to examine the potential predictors for student political participation. After methodological problems of past research - such as the confounding of activism and ideology and the specific focus on activism in the 1960's - were corrected, Dean's (1961) Alienation scale, Rotter's (1966) Internal-External Locus of Control scale, and Olsen's (1969) Alienation scale were used to predict political activity levels, as measured by Kerpelman's (1972) Activity scale. A stepwise multiple regression procedure showed that futility (a subscale of Olsen's Alienation scale) was the only …

Using Critical Thinking Skills To Improve Achievement: An Inservice And Instruction Program., Dolores L. Higgins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This Major Applied Research Project proposed three specific ways to improve the Critical Thinking Skills of students at the Carrie Downie Elementary School as measured by standardized achievement test results, increased placement of students in the Colonial School District's program for the gifted, and the inclusion of critical thinking skills in teacher's daily lessons. During the course of this project, 50 underachieving students were given a learning styles inventory to assess their specific learning needs. Inservice for teachers was conducted to review the results of this inventory and provided instruction in other areas related to thinking skills, such as questioning, …

This report describes a program to improve the achievement of the kindergarten students at the primary school in Charles City County. The instructional program was structured and academic in nature. An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Sociologists report that twenty million Americans are on a 'serious' diet. There has never been a period when such large numbers of people have spent so much time, money, and emotional energy on their weight. The message conveyed by society, the Fashion and movie industries, modern medicine and the media is quite clear - thin is in! The problem lies in the fact that the message does not distinguish between realistic standards and unattainable ideals, especially for women.
Experts on eating disorders report that ninety percent of those suffering from anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) are females, ages 13-21, from white ethnic …

An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Incorporating Additional Specializations And Concentrations Into The Programs For Higher Education Curriculum Structure, William M. Kaye
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The last major curriculum change in the Programs for Higher Education (PHE) took place seven years ago when the specialization courses were incorporated into the summer institute. Since that time there have been significant changes in the higher education environment which have impacted on the vitality and marketability of the PHE programs. Changes in PHE student demographics have also contributed to an increasing concern about the lack of variety of courses in the academic program, as well issues such as the viability of introducing more specific fields of specialization and/or concentrations to the programs, the potential need for a more …
