The Experiences Of Low-Income Students Focusing On An Online Learning Environment In Southwest Georgia: A Hermeneutical Phenomenology, Jayda M. Williams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutical phenomenological study is to understand the experiences of low-income students in an online learning environment and how they are socially and academically integrated at an institution in southwest Georgia. Tinto’s 1997 revised student integration model and theory on how institutions must socially and academically integrate students to improve students’ persistence is to guide this research. The participants for this study are ten low-income students who participated in the data collection tools, which are surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews. The participants expressed their experiences, barriers, social and academic integration, and persistence in an online learning …
The Church And Sexual Socialization: A Practical Guide Equipping Youth Ministers To Aid Lgbtq+ Students, Connor Kennedy
The Church And Sexual Socialization: A Practical Guide Equipping Youth Ministers To Aid Lgbtq+ Students, Connor Kennedy
Senior Honors Theses
Sexual socialization is the process by which people learn about their sexual desires and identity. This paper displays the process of sexual socialization as it specifically relates to the youth in the United States. The need for authority on the matter of LGBTQ+ beliefs is established through a biblical worldview. The gap between the church and gender and sexual minority youth is wide, and the problem must be addressed. The author then provides a process and set of beliefs that any youth minister should hold if they desire to aid LGBTQ+ students.
The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
Honors Projects
All students have experienced low motivation at one point in their academic career, but what are the factors that can affect this? Is it solely based on their personality and work ethic, or can the environment have an effect? This study discusses the effects on mental health through architecture. Can the amount of natural light in a building affect the motivation of students? Natural light is something that is often overlooked, mostly considered as a perk rather than a necessity. How can students truly feel passionate about their work sitting in a dark place? To evaluate this data, this study …
Andrews University Pre-Professional Students Preparedness For A Future With Artificial Intelligence, Zachary Alignay
Andrews University Pre-Professional Students Preparedness For A Future With Artificial Intelligence, Zachary Alignay
Honors Theses
Artificial Intelligence technology has advanced considerably over the past four years. With such rapid technological development, the question has to be asked if students are adequately educated on the implications and abilities of artificial intelligence. Are Andrews University pre-professional students prepared for future careers with artificial intelligence? To approach this question, a survey of students across multiple perspectives was conducted to sample if there was a consensus, or lack thereof, on the perception of ethics regarding artificial intelligence, to ask students how using artificial intelligence has changed their education, what purposes it can be used or cannot be used, personal …

Investigating The Effects Of Bisphenol-A On Planaria Phototaxis And Survival, Reyna Docine, Alexis Galindez, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a potentially toxic plasticizing compound in various consumer products like food and beverage containers and toys. Research suggests exposure poses a significant risk to human health, leading to neurological effects, including anxiety, aggression, and cognitive defects. Planaria flatworms (like species Girardia dorotocephala), free living aquatic flatworms known for their regenerative properties and well-characterized nervous system, are valuable models for studying the impact of environmental toxins. Their distinct photophobic response to light offers insight into potential neurotoxic effects. While the impact of BPA on regeneration has been studied in some species of planaria, its effects on specific …

Student Publications and Presentations
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a powerful tool in archaeology to understand the chemical composition of artifacts. Bone digenesis is the chemical and physical process by which bones degrade over time. Archeologists discovered that archaeological bones from different excavation sites have different states of physical diagenesis, depending on site conditions. Methods are needed to quantify the chemical aspect bone digenesis. We are using fish scales, from South Inlet Park in Florida as a model to test IR spectroscopy as a new method to quantify bone digenesis. In this experiment, we used excavated fish scales and categorized them into three diagenetic categories: …

Student Publications and Presentations
Sea level rise is causing archeological sites in Florida to get wet. It’s unknown how the artifacts will be affected by getting wet. This study investigates how one type of artifact (gar scales) is affected physically and chemically by wetting. This study tested the hypothesis that pristine gar scales retain less water compared to degraded scales. The independent variable was scale condition (pristine vs. degraded). The dependent variable was water weight retention. 32 pristine and 32 degraded gar scales were collected from an archaeological site and weighed prior to soaking in water for 4 days. After soaking all the gar …

Islamophobia In Public Schools: A Mixed Methods Look At The Effectiveness Of Parental Ethnic-Racial Strategies In Promoting Resilience Among Muslim Children, Lallia Allali
Dissertations
The ongoing Islamophobic ideology in the United States has magnified discriminatory practices, exclusion, and increased violence toward Muslims (Esposito & Kalin, 2011; Trudo, 2021), and Islamophobia has further disadvantaged Muslim American adolescents through various forms of discrimination against them in schools. In fact, Muslim American students report the highest rate of discrimination across all religious groups, and researchers have found that active family ethnic-racial socialization can often mitigate the negative impacts of discrimination (Hughes et al., 2006; Hughly et al., 2019).
To test this hypothesis, this study was designed to focus on Muslim families’ ethnic-racial socialization practices and the implications …

Optimization Of Human Interactions In The College Campus Model Via Simio Integration, Benjamin E. Chaback
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
College campuses are a significant part of life in some cities. Many students each year attend university, pursuing additional knowledge from faculty members. Both staff and faculty members rely on these students to have successful jobs and to ensure the university functions. Yet recently, more and more students are attending, leading to overcrowding, lower admission rates, and difficulty getting into good programs. Previous work exists on qualitative student affairs and quantitative retention data, yet little on using simulations to model this problem. This work aimed to (a) Determine the ability to successfully model human interactions/people flow on a college campus, …

Phenomenological Inquiry Into Middle School Teachers’ Perception Of Creativity, Katalin Grajzel
Phenomenological Inquiry Into Middle School Teachers’ Perception Of Creativity, Katalin Grajzel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Researchers do agree that creativity is an ability that can be developed and should be fostered (Guilford, 1958; Parnes, 1961). Teachers play an important role in creativity development and often serve as gatekeepers to identify gifted and talented students (Bianco et al., 2011; Novak & Jones, 2021; Schack & Starko, 1990). However, teachers’ judgment of their students’ creativity often only correlates weakly with the results of creativity measures (Kettler et al., 2018; Torrance, 1963). Therefore, in this study I explored teachers’ perception of creativity and creative students as well as factors that support or hinder creativity. The findings revealed that …

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting
Entrepreneurship as a field of study has different sub-dimensions due to its usefulness in society, which makes it difficult to gain a holistic understanding of its key due to practical applications. A shift in generations creates a different yet unique business environment, especially in new business ventures. Younger generations have a different view and insight about entrepreneurship in small business. Thus, this study aims to seek deeper insight into entrepreneurial behaviour and intention among younger generations. Twenty semi-structured interviews with students from a higher private university in Malaysia were performed using the qualitative method. Using Nvivo 12, the interviews' transcriptions …
