Bridging The Home And School: A Case Study Of One Web-Enabled Technology, Michael K. Barbour

Education Faculty Publications

In today's society, there are many new technologies that educators have at their disposal to use both inside and outside of the classroom. One such technology was the focus of the first stage of an on-going project on the "open school" model. This "open school" model is designed to provide access to information on a child's schooling to both students and parents outside of the traditional school day. This article considers the use of one web-enabled technology called ThinkWave in two one term, elective courses.

"I'M Usually The Only Black In My Class": The Human And Social Costs Of Within-School Segregation, Carla O'Connor Jan 2002

"I'M Usually The Only Black In My Class": The Human And Social Costs Of Within-School Segregation, Carla O'Connor

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The work that has focused on within-school segregation has been most concerned with how this phenomenon limits the educational opportunities and might incur a psychological toll on the mass of Black students who find themselves relegated to lower-ability classrooms in integrated schools. This Article, however, allows us to begin to examine the other side of the coin. It reports on how within-school segregation practices create psychological, social, and educational pressures for those few Black students who have escaped enrollment in the least rigorous courses in their school. More precisely, the Article offers insight into how high achieving Black students in …

The Modern Mathematics Classroom: A Collection Of Virtual Manipulatives For Teachers And Students, David Stowell May 2001

The Modern Mathematics Classroom: A Collection Of Virtual Manipulatives For Teachers And Students, David Stowell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An important assumption in the implementation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards 2000 is that the mathematics classroom is a place where students are actively involved in the learning process. One way to foster such a learning environment is by using manipulatives. By their nature, manipulatives make the learning of mathematics a discovery-based activity. As computer use increases in the classroom, virtual manipulatives will become more important as instructional tools. Virtual manipulatives offer advantages over their traditional versions. Most important is their dynamic nature. Their dynamic capabilities provide two main benefits. First, the number of potential …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Self-Management Programs For Students With Disruptive Behaviors: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Heidi Kupiec

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Disruptive behaviors exhibited by children and youth pose a major problem for students exhibiting the behaviors, their peers, parents, and teachers. Disruptive behaviors including shouting, aggression, off-task behaviors, and noncompliance, correlate with poor social skills, low peer acceptance, higher rates of academic deficiencies, and in adulthood instability in relationships and employment. Self-management programs employ traditional behavior management methods and with self-management components to teach students to self-monitor or evaluate their behavior. By teaching students to be aware of and to manage their own behavior students may be better able to generalize appropriate behaviors to other less supervised settings, complete more …

Digital Library Of Thesis: Administration Side, Soo Noan Chew

Student Works (2000-2009)

Currently, the faculty promoted a plan to rethink the way graduate students present their theses. Traditionally, the theses were produced in paper fonn and storing in library. The access of student work through this method still facing a lot of problems including less timely public access to users, shelf space required for storage, no maintenance, resources are not fully used and cost of preparing theses are high. Thus, Digital Library of Theses is proposed to eliminate all the shortcomings mentioned above. Digital Library of Theses (administration side) is a web-based theses administration system for faculty that can cater about 3 …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum report presents an evaluation of the current 3rd-grade reading curriculum for the Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) in Gary, Indiana, at Daniel Webster Elementary School. Traditionally, Daniel Webster Elementary School students have performed well, particularly, at the 3rd-grade level in reading achievement as measured by the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills. However, during the 1997-1999 school years, test scores for the district, as well as Daniel Webster Elementary School, declined or failed to show progress. Results from a district evaluation of the reading curriculum in 1 998, along with the decline in reading scores, caused the GCSC to …
