Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research
BACKGROUND: The transition between preclinical and clinical years during medical school has been shown to be challenging. Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) implements one required two-week-long shadowing program for first and one one-week-long shadowing program for second-year medical students called Week On the Wards (WOW). The goal of this study is to ascertain whether students who completed the WOW curriculum found it beneficial over the long-term. Specifically, we want to evaluate alumni's impression of the program's influence on career, specialty choice, professional development, personal development, and confidence.
METHODS: To evaluate our program, we developed, validated, and distributed a …

Creative Approaches To Teaching Foreign Languages Case Study And Survey Findings Students Of English Language Faculty At Ubt, Alma Lama, Rudy Baez, Henry Sanchez, Duli Pllana
UBT International Conference
Teaching and learning a second language follows a general process for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. Due to students' different learning styles, it is necessary to apply various teaching methods. There is no single teaching method that universally works for everyone; there is no magic wand that guarantees miracles in teaching and learning. Consequently, researchers in education explore diverse pathways to find successful teaching methods. This paper focuses on creative teaching and learning, as well as verbal creativity in teaching English as a second language in Kosovo. The case study centers on peer interviews with students, where students create or …

Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina
Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Dementia-related stigma is a prominent barrier for people living with dementia, leading to poor well-being and social isolation. Adolescents are an under-researched group in society that may already have experience of dementia and are more susceptible to attitudinal change which makes them ideal targets for anti-stigma initiatives outlined by public health policy. For the development of evidence-based anti-stigma initiatives in adolescents, it is important to understand which socio-demographic groups are most likely to develop stigmatising attitudes and why. This study aims to identify factors of dementia-related stigma in adolescents. Methods: A total of 1,044 adolescents (aged 11–18 years) from …

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the relationships between insomnia and anxiety, mood, eating, and alcohol-use disorders is needed given its prevalence among young adults. Supervised machine learning provides the ability to evaluate which mental disorder is most associated with heightened insomnia among U.S. college students. Combined with Bayesian network analysis, probable directional relationships between insomnia and interacting symptoms may be illuminated.
METHODS: The current exploratory analyses utilized a national sample of college students across 26 U.S. colleges and universities collected during population-level screening before entering a randomized controlled trial. We used a 4-step statistical approach: (1) at the disorder level, …

Pakistan has a high rate of genetic disorders and neonatal mortality concurrent with noted lack of genetic counselors and geneticists. To meet the needs of the patient population, the responsibility of providing clinical genetic services falls on general and specialty physicians. However, their education regarding these essential services is not standardized in medical school curricula nor has it ever been evaluated. The purpose of this work is to describe the self-perceived knowledge, clinical comfort, and perspectives of Pakistani medical students toward their medical genetics' education. A web-based survey was distributed electronically to medical schools around the country. The survey comprised …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: During the third-year emergency medicine (EM) clerkship, medical students are immersed in traumatic incidents with their patients and clinical teams. Trauma-informed medical education (TIME) applies trauma-informed care (TIC) principles to help students manage trauma. We aimed to qualitatively describe the extent to which students perceived the six TIME domains as they navigated critical incidents during their EM clerkship.
METHODS: We employed a constructivist, modified grounded theory approach to explore medical students' experiences. We used the critical incident technique to elicit narratives to better understand the six TIME domains as they naturally appear in the clerkship. Participants were asked to …

Difference In Persistence Scores Among Community College Students: A Causal-Comparative Study, Jessica Jean Deroche
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study is to determine if there are persistence score differences among students who have taken EDUC 1300 – Learning Frameworks, those who have not taken the course, and if there are any generational status differences. There is a need to better understand persistence in students, especially within community colleges given the increased enrollment rates, and low retention and completion rates these schools are experiencing. This study provided an examination of the persistence scores of 194 students attending a multi-campus community college in the south utilizing the College Persistence Questionnaire.
