An Investigation And Analysis Of The Baccalaureate Degree Completion Rates Of Community College Transfer Students, Christian Ifeanyi Egemba

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The United States faces increasing competition in the global marketplace. One viable way to strengthen America's competitive position in the global economy is to develop its human capital through a genuine commitment to and aggressive investment in its higher education system, which culminates in baccalaureate-level education. There are several benefits of a baccalaureate-level education, for both individuals and for the country. For individuals, there are self-development and economic benefits. For the country, there are economic development benefits and a more enlightened citizenry; The transferability of the community college credits to four-year institutions extends the following benefits to the economically disadvantaged …

Having Their Say: Parents Of High-Achieving African American Elementary Students Talk About The Home-School Relationship, Donna Mahler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Having Their Say: Parents of High-Achieving African American Elementary Students Talk About the Home-School Relationship describes a qualitative research study that explored parents' perceptions of their role in education and how these perceptions translate into specific parent involvement practices both at home and at school. It also identifies the concerns that African American parents have about their children's schooling and offers their suggestions for improvement; Twelve parents of African American students identified as "high-achieving" and of varying socioeconomic levels participated in either a focus group discussion or in an individual in-depth interview about parent involvement in education. Epstein's theoretical model …

Solving Problems By Analogy: The Benefits And Detriments Of Hints And Depressed Moods, Paula T. Hertel, Alicia J. Knoedler

Psychology Faculty Research

In Experiment 1, mildly depressed (dysphoric) and nondysphoric subjects tried to solve logic, problems that were analogous to subsequent target problems; then they attempted target solutions with or wit hour hints in the form of the analogues' themes. Target solutions were impaired by the hints in the nondysphoric group alone. Experiment 2A was a no-training control to verify that transfer did indeed occur. In Experiment 2B, all subjects received hints in the transfer phase; the training phase was either problem oriented (as in Experiment 1) or memory oriented. Again, nondysphoric subjects solved fewerproblems following problem-oriented training than did both dysphoric …

The Disparate Treatment Of Student And Family Farmer Debtors: Suggestions For Statutory Reform Of Bankruptcy Policy, Nancy H. Kratzke, Thomas O. Depperschmidt Nov 1995

The Disparate Treatment Of Student And Family Farmer Debtors: Suggestions For Statutory Reform Of Bankruptcy Policy, Nancy H. Kratzke, Thomas O. Depperschmidt

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The resolution of bankruptcy litigation involving individuals under the governmental student loan programs and family farmers under Chapter 12 of the Bankruptcy Code provides an intriguing insight into congressional policy. That divergence is especially prominent in the treatment of "disposable income" under these two statutory provisions. When deciding issues relating to whether income should go to unsecured creditors or be used to offset future farming costs, courts tend to interpret the Code in favor of debtors; conversely, the Code creates, and courts perpetuate through their rulings, a clear presumption against discharging student loan obligations. The debtor will prevail only if …
