Benefits, Challenges, And Recommendations For Implementing A Sustainability-Based Service-Learning Program At Utah State University: An Initial Assessment Of The Community Bridge Initiative, Julie Koldewyn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Service-Learning is a method of teaching that allows students to learn course content by engaging in real world applications, which can enhance student learning and benefit communities. As populations increase, many communities struggle with the corresponding issues of sustainability. A program that could use student expertise to address these concerns would be beneficial for both students and communities. This mixed-methods study explored the benefits, challenges, and recommendations for implementing a sustainability-based service-learning program, the Community Bridge Initiative (CBI), at Utah State University (USU) in relation to community needs and student responses to being in program pilot classes. Pilot classes were …

Based on a study of the students' own voices, outlined are responsive actions academic libraries can take to make Hispanic students feel more welcomed and comfortable. Since use of libraries is positively related to student retention, it is important that we understand our own students' experiences and recommendations.
- Invite resident hall staff to host library sessions
- Train and invite peer (other Hispanic students) tour guides for patrons
- Roaming reference service
- Bilingual brochures (separate ones for them and their parents)
- A poster that showed which staff have different languages

One of the most overwhelming issues at Eastern Kentucky University is academic retention. In 2013, Eastern had a four-year graduation rate of 23.5%. Each university has a goal to keep academic retention as high as possible. EKU has one of the highest rates of enrollment from students of the Appalachian region, an area of Kentucky that is diverse both ecologically and culturally than other regions of the state. EKU is also known among its students for being a “suitcase school,” a college or university that is active Monday through Friday, but is quiet on Saturday and Sunday due to students …
The Social Maladjustment Exclusion: Leaving A Category Of Students Behind And The Problem With State And Judicial Interpretation Of Congressional Intent, Carolyn Mason
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Since its inception in 1975, controversy surrounding the Social Maladjustment Exclusion has plagued its understnding. This paper delves deeper into the controversy and explores jurisdictional and nationwide patterns in the judicial interpretation of the social maladjustment exclusion. This analysis further demonstrates how the evolving interpretation of social maladjustment is out of touch with the needs of vulnerable youth in our schools and society, and may be based, in large measure, on a small group of non-representative plaintiffs.

Experiences Of 4th Year Nursing Students With Human Simulators In Their Transition To Practice, Eva Peisachovich
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on Saturday, April 9, 2016, and Friday, April 8, 2016:
The study explores the experiences of 4th year undergraduate nursing students using standardized patient (SP) methodology as a form of experiential education (EE) in their transition to practice. Given that the nature of nurses' work takes place in diverse and complex care settings, the use and application of SP Methodology is essential in the transition to practice. Although SPs have been used in many disciplines to engage students in experiential learning it is a novice methodology in nursing education. Given the limited research studies associated with SP methodology …

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Open Distance Learning (ODL) institutions have adopted on-line technology to facilitate teaching and learning and to enhance interaction between the students-to-students, students-to educator, students-to-study material and students-to-ODL. Students are encouraged by the university to interact on-line by using the discussion forum and electronic mails. On-line discussion forum are critical in ODL because it allows people who cannot physically attend the educational institution to interact with each other. The purpose of the study was to determine how on-line interactive tools may be used to enhance students-to-students, students-to educator, students-to-study material and students-to-ODL interactions. Probability random sampling was used. Data was collected …

Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015 and Tuesday, November 10, 2015:
Student satisfaction has been associated with later professional attitudes, career commitment, retention in the field of nursing, and more engagement as alumni of our institutions. 1-4. Assessment of student satisfaction in nursing is complex in that we must assess in-class theory courses, clinical practice, and services provided by the faculty as a whole. 2. Evaluation of all aspects of nursing education is challenging, as most university and college based programs standardized evaluations do not fit well with the multiple domains within the nursing curriculum. This issue has been …

Resiliency Of Latino High School Students: The Impact Of External And Internal Factors, Diana Marie Lucero
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated factors promoting academic resiliency within Latino students at an urban high school in the Los Angeles area. The criteria of “on-track” to graduate served as the operational definition of academic resilience. A total of 92 students completed the survey. Of these, 57 were on-track to graduate and 35 students were “not on-track” to graduate. The California Healthy Kids Survey: Resiliency & Youth Development Module (WestEd, 2008a) was the instrument employed to obtain quantitative data using three external protective factors (caring relationships, high expectations, and meaningful participation) and three internal protective factors (social competence, autonomy and sense of …

Remaking Selves, Repositioning Selves, Or Remaking Space: An Examination Of Asian American College Students' Processes Of "Belonging", Michelle Samura
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"Only a few studies have examined Asian American students’ sense of belonging (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000; Museus & Maramba, 2010). Scholars who study Asian American college students have suggested that Asian Americans are awkwardly positioned as separate from other students of color vis-à-vis the model minority stereotype (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000). Furthermore, Asian Americans often are viewed as overrepresented on college campuses, yet they remain under-served by campus support programs and resources and overlooked by researchers. Many Asian Americans have gained access to higher education, but the ways in which they belong on campuses is unclear. …

Pharmacy Practice & Administration
Objective: To evaluate the reliability of a peer evaluation instrument in a longitudinal team-based learning setting.
Methods: Student pharmacists were instructed to evaluate the contributions of their peers. Evaluations were analyzed for the variance of the scores by identifying low, medium, and high scores. Agreement between performance ratings within each group of students was assessed via intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC).
Results: We found little variation in the standard deviation (SD) based on the score means among the high, medium, and low scores within each group. The lack of variation in SD of results between groups suggests that …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology
The impact of psychosocial status at onset of antiretroviral therapy on changes in quality of life (QOL) and subjectively rated health (SRH) among adults on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in resource-limited settings is poorly understood. Therefore, we evaluate the association between stigma, anxiety, depression, and social support and change in QOL and SRH in HIV-infected Ugandan adults during an 18-month period.Psychosocial indicators were assessed at enrollment using structured questionnaires. QOL and SRH measures were assessed at months 0, 6, 12, and 18 using the Medical Outcomes Survey-HIV. Linear mixed models determined risk estimated differences in QOL and SRH in …

Sexualization, Sex Discrimination, And Public School Dress Codes, Meredith Johnson Harbach
University of Richmond Law Review
This essay joins the conversation about sexualization, sex discrimination, and public school dress codes to situate current debates within in the broader cultural and legal landscapes in which they exist. My aim is not to answer definitively the questions I pose above. Rather, I ground the controversy in these broader contexts in order to better understand the stakes and to glean insights into how schools, students, and communities might better navigate dress code debates.

Female Student Veterans' Resiliency In Their Role Transitions, Michael Dennis Parise
Female Student Veterans' Resiliency In Their Role Transitions, Michael Dennis Parise
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined female student veterans as they pertain to Schlossberg's Theory of Transition (1981), which asserts that many life events influence one’s ability to adapt when transitioning from one role to another in a linear fashion. The results of this study reveal that the participants viewed change not as a transition, but that they faced conflict from competing roles and stressors. Their attainment of their goals resulted from their ability to be resilient.

Disaster Preparedness : Need For Inclusion In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Susan Achora, Joy K. Kamanyire
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
With the increasing global frequency of disasters, the call for disaster preparedness training needs to be reinforced. Nurses form the largest group of the healthcare workforce and are often on the frontline in disaster management. Therefore, nurses should be adequately equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond to disasters, starting from their pre-service training to their in-service professional training. However, the inclusion of disaster preparedness education in undergraduate nursing curricula is minimal in most countries. The purpose of this article is to highlight the current state of nursing education and training in disaster management, both generally and in Oman. …
