Development Of An Associate Of Applied Science Degree In Interpreting For The Deaf At The Community College Of Southern Nevada, Sandra L. Workman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The associate of applied science degree in deaf studies has been in place since 1 994 and 4 is transferrable as a prerequisite toward a four-year deaf studies degree. The Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) has the only deaf studies program in the state. If a student wants to pursue a degree in interpreting for the deaf, the student must go out of state. In July, 1 997, the governor of Nevada signed a law stating that American Sign Language is a fully developed, autonomous, natural language with distinct grammar, syntax, and art forms. However, the current administrations at …

Laboratories Teaching Concepts In Microcontrollers And Hardware-Software Co-Design, Daryl G. Beetner, Hardy J. Pottinger, Kyle Mitchell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hardware software co-design is becoming increasingly important to the embedded systems industry. It will soon be fundamental to digital systems design. As such, students in electrical and computer engineering and in computer science should be introduced to hardware-software co-design early in their undergraduate education.
We are designing laboratory modules which introduce concepts of hardware-software co-design in an undergraduate's first course on microcontrollers and digital systems design. Students use design automation tools to develop FPGA-based hardware for use with an 8051-microcontroller and use common software development tools to develop microcontroller software in C or assembly language. Co-simulation of hardware and software …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-01-20, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 1991-2000
This edition of the Wooster Voice opens with an article about one of the professors at the college. A political science professor became the first lady of Croatia. Professor Dijana Plestina's husband Ivica Racan became the first opposition party prime minister in the history of Croatia. Furthermore, there is an article that discusses SGA's loss of 5 of its members, 4 representatives and one cabinet member. This left SGA with only 17 members, and 2 weeks until the budget/funding meeting. In the pages that follow, there is an article in the News Brief section that discusses hazing at the college. …

The Freshman Connection: Implementing And Assessing A Plan To Increase Student Success, Pamela Downing-Hosten
The Freshman Connection: Implementing And Assessing A Plan To Increase Student Success, Pamela Downing-Hosten
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this practicum was to develop, implement, and assess a plan for reducing the number of freshmen at the high school who failed the grade, with failure being defined as the inability to earn 4 credits within 1 year. From the 1993-1994 school year until the 1997-1998 school year, an average of 17.7% of the 9th-grade class had to repeat the grade. Through the year-long implementation of the plan called the Freshman Connection program, the researcher hoped that the failure rate of 21.9% in 1998 would be reduced to 10.0% in 1999.
The Freshman Connection program entailed (a) …
Effects Of Preservice Peer Coaching On Student Teachers In Special Education, Kit-Hung Lee
Effects Of Preservice Peer Coaching On Student Teachers In Special Education, Kit-Hung Lee
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of a peer coaching program among Traditional and Non-Traditional student teachers and to compare their subsequent teaching behaviors and attitude toward peer coaching. The variables investigated through direct class observation were effective and ineffective teaching behaviors using the criteria of the Florida Performance Measurement System (FPMS). Attitude toward peer coaching was investigated using survey methodology; Data analysis indicated the following findings. There was a statistically significant ordinal interaction effect between the group and timing of the assessment in effective teaching behaviors after participation in peer coaching. There was neither a …
School And Student Alienation: Perceptions Of Secondary Students With And Without Disabilities, Monica Ree Brown
School And Student Alienation: Perceptions Of Secondary Students With And Without Disabilities, Monica Ree Brown
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study had two purposes. The first was to investigate and gather student perceptions (e.g., authoritarian, relevancy of the curriculum, teacher expectations, amount of student autonomy, student placement, school ethnic composition, parental interest, race/ethnicity) within the secondary school environment associated with their feelings of alienation from their school. The second purpose was multifaceted and involved: (1) the identification of the levels of powerlessness, normlessness, meaninglessness, and social isolation/estrangement experienced by different students, and (2) the analysis of individual student characteristics (e.g., gender, student placement, perceived ability, race/ethnicity, perceived social status) that may contribute to school alienation; The participants in this …

Thought To Thesis: A Look At The Collaborative Process And Its Value To The Student Playwright, Bryant Jonathan Turnage
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Thought To Thesis is an examination of the individual facets of the theatrical collaborative process and their use to a student playwright in creating, writing, editing, and staging a graduate thesis production. Components taken into consideration are the following: the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program itself, the required laboratory class, and the thesis director; The research was gathered through a series of interviews and observations coupled with relevant writing from established theatre professionals. The body of the thesis is organized into chapters, each discussing a particular aspect of the collaborative process.
