Service Learning In Contemporary Japan And America, Joseph R. Feinburg

International Service Learning & Community Engagement

Among the people of both Japan and the United States, there is currently widespread concern that the student population is in trouble, that students are losing interest in civic participation and their moral sensibility. Educators in both countries are looking toward service-learning as a means of recapturing a sense of civic responsibility in today's young people. The article discusses mandated service-learning and required service-learning in schools in Japan and Maryland.

Engineering Management At Umr -- Alumni Voices, Stephen A. Raper

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Department of Engineering Management at the University of Missouri-Rolla is among the oldest of its kind in the United States, and has over 2000 Bachelors level alumni graduates. The Department will undergo ABET accreditation under the new assessment based criteria in the fall of 2002. The new criteria specify that engineering programs should seek to continuously improve their degree offerings through an ongoing assessment process that includes constituent input. Our own department has specified undergraduate alumni as one of the prime or key constituents that will be queried for input into our own processes. For the first time in …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We are involved in a project funded by the Department of Education (FIPSE) which focuses on developing interactive software to improve the teaching and learning of engineering statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials. This paper presents an overview of this project, discusses its objectives, and focuses on one particular aspect of the project.the use of web-based homework problems as assessment tools to evaluate student learning. The overall project includes creating, for all three engineering mechanics courses, the following web-based learning tools: (a) Animated theory modules, using Macromedia.s Flash development software, which display basic theory and example problems in an engaging, …

Principles Of Biology In Environmental Engineering: Molecular Biology-Based Identification Of Microorganisms, Daniel B. Oerther Jun 2002

Principles Of Biology In Environmental Engineering: Molecular Biology-Based Identification Of Microorganisms, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The various aspects of a course on use of technology from molecular biology to screen microorganism in environmental samples and to monitor microbial biocatalysts in reactors, is discussed. The objective of the course is to teach students to adapt techniques from molecular biology to address important issues in environmental engineering. In case of methanogens, design considerations in environmental engineering include stabilization of sewage sludge through anaerobic digestion and wastewater treatment. The hands-on format encourages students to develop scientific questions, learn appropriate methodology, conduct careful experimentation, and draw conclusions worthy of presentation.

Assessment of Student Learning Reports

In April of 2002, an online survey entitled “Assessment of Your Learning Experience: General Education” was administered via the Internet to UMM seniors. The Office of Institutional Research and Reporting in the Twin Cities coded the questionnaire into HTML format and prepared the statistical report. There were 138 responses to the survey. Since the total number of graduates in the spring semester of 2002 was 287, this was a 48% response rate.

University Student Attitudes Toward The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Bridget Kirsty Theakston Jan 2002

University Student Attitudes Toward The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Bridget Kirsty Theakston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether graduate special education students' attitudes toward inclusion would be more positive than the attitudes of undergraduate special education students. A survey designed to determine how positive university student attitudes toward inclusion are, was distributed to undergraduate and graduate level special education classes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Results indicated that undergraduate special education students were more likely to communicate a positive attitude toward the inclusion of students with disabilities in the regular education classroom, than graduate special education students.

Conscious Use Of Race As A Voluntary Means To Educational Ends In Elementary And Secondary Education: A Legal Argument Derived From Recent Judicial Decisions, Julie F. Mead Jan 2002

Conscious Use Of Race As A Voluntary Means To Educational Ends In Elementary And Secondary Education: A Legal Argument Derived From Recent Judicial Decisions, Julie F. Mead

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This paper provides an in-depth examination of the ten recent court decisions concerning race-based student selection processes. As these cases will illustrate, school districts face increasing demands to justify any race-conscious selection process. The significance of meeting the demands and the implications for what appears to be an evolving legal theory is national in scope and broad in application. Some have even argued that some of these cases mark a departure away from the Court's thinking in Brown v. the Board of Education. It should also be noted that each of the cases mentioned above occurred in the context …

Preservice Teachers' Beliefs About Classroom Management Before And After Student Teaching, Bonnie Gayle Ballard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Preservice Teachers Beliefs About Classroom Management Before and After Student Teaching describes a qualitative research study that explored student teachers' beliefs about effective classroom management before they began their student teaching and then again at the end of their internship. This study examines the differences in these student teachers' beliefs about effective management techniques after they have had actual classroom experiences with their cooperating classroom teachers; Four student teachers and their nine cooperating teachers identified their management styles through the use of two surveys. The Inventory of Classroom Management Styles (ICMS) determined responses based on a continuum of control from …

Dual -Enrolled Student Success In An Open Enrollment Community College, Frank James Dipuma

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study investigated student success in a dual enrollment program at an open enrollment community college. The objective of the analysis was to determine the success of dual enrolled students compared with regularly enrolled community college students. Indicators of student success, including GPA, retention, and remediation, were examined for dual enrolled students; Results of the study indicated that high school students concurrently enrolled at a community college were similar in many respects to the general college population. Overall, there was a significant difference in the GPA performance between Community College High School (CCHS) students and regularly enrolled college students, with …

An Equal Educational Opportunity For Language Minority Students: A Legal Analysis Of Language Education After Lau, Roger J Gonzalez Jan 2002

An Equal Educational Opportunity For Language Minority Students: A Legal Analysis Of Language Education After Lau, Roger J Gonzalez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An Equal Educational Opportunity for Language Minority Students: A Legal Analysis of Language Education After Lau is a legal/historical study that examined the current legal standards applicable to the education of language minority students in the United States. This was achieved by analyzing the jurisprudence emerging from the interpretation and application of the Lau v. Nichols Supreme Court decision; Several questions were considered during the research of this dissertation. These included: How has the legal precedent established in Lau v. Nichols been interpreted and applied by subsequent law cases involving the education of language minority students? What role has the …
