A Comparison Of Attitudes And Goals Of Eligible Students : Joiners Versus Non-Joiners, Sharon L. Sawdo

Honors Capstones

An excerpt from the 1986-87 Northern Illinois University Honors Program Handbook states the philosophy of the NIU Honors Program. The philosophy suggests that the program is directed toward highly capable students with inquiring minds who wish to work independently on projects of their own design and who value the ability to interact with faculty in creating these independent projects. In past years, however, the Honors staff and faculty have questioned whether the philosophy they promote is in agreement with the philosophy of the highly capable students with whom they work. Are students with “high intellectual potential and demonstrated ability” interested …

Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.) Jan 1987

Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.

The collection of articles now presented were all written by people who have taught in Arnhem Land - hence the use of the Arnhem Land words yolngu (Aboriginal) and …

Role Expectations And Role Conflicts Of Presbyterian College Chaplains, Stephen R. Weisz Sep 1986

Role Expectations And Role Conflicts Of Presbyterian College Chaplains, Stephen R. Weisz

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The various constituencies to which a Presbyterian College chaplain must be accountable have varying expectations of what roles are appropriate for chaplains to play in the educational institutions they serve. The college administration, the local Presbytery, students and chaplains themselves each have their own perceptions of the real and ideal role of the chaplain.

This study sought to investigate the "Real Role and the Ideal Role” perceptions of seventy-two chaplains serving Presbyterian Church related colleges in the United States. A sample of one hundred fifty students attending Tusculum College, where the chaplain functions primarily in an academic teaching role, and …

Improving Auditory Sequencing Skills In The Kindergarten Age Child Through The Increased Instruction Of Music, Millicent Hume Brandt Jun 1986

Improving Auditory Sequencing Skills In The Kindergarten Age Child Through The Increased Instruction Of Music, Millicent Hume Brandt

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The writer applied an increased frequency of general music instruction given to a target group of kindergarten children in order to measure its impact on auditory memory sequencing skills. A control group received the general music instruction on a less frequent basis. The writer, a music teacher specialist, theorized that skills learned in the music class setting would transfer to other (academic) classroom settings, as measured by a standardized testing instrument and a classroom teacher survey checklist.

The writer designed a method of instruction using music classroom materials selected to include sequencing and auditory memory skills. The target group received …

A Computer Assisted Instructional Program To Facilitate Eleventh Grade Remediation In Skill H68, Direct Address, Audrey P. Dunn May 1986

A Computer Assisted Instructional Program To Facilitate Eleventh Grade Remediation In Skill H68, Direct Address, Audrey P. Dunn

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author created and implemented a computer assisted instruction (CAI) program to remediate juniors in skill H68, dealing with direct address. This skill is found on the State Student Assessment Test, Part I. The program's aims were to increase student achievement, alleviate the problems of management, improve student attitude, and teach basic computer literacy to below average students.

The program consisted of two lessons, each dealing with one component of the skill of using the comma to set off proper names in direct address. The study group included all eleventh grade students who failed to master this skill. 100% achieved …
