Challenges Students Face When Solving Open - Ended Problems, Nikos J. Mourtos
Challenges Students Face When Solving Open - Ended Problems, Nikos J. Mourtos
Faculty Publications
Several core aerospace engineering courses at SJSU have been re-designed in an effort to help students develop problem-solving skills. This re-design includes (a) explicit definition of skills and attributes students need to develop to become capable problem-solvers, (b) inclusion of open-ended problems in each of several key, junior-level, core courses, (c) coaching students in the use of Wood’s Problem-Solving Methodology, and (d) development of rubrics to evaluate student performance at each step of this methodology. The paper discusses the application of this process and, in particular, it presents an assessment of student performance in two courses: fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. …

CGU Faculty Publications and Research
In an effort to increase female student interest in computing we applied and evaluated an interdisciplinary approach at a suburban high school in eastern Los Angeles County, California. Three classes, an IB Environmental Science class, an AP Environmental Science class, and a Computer Science were surveyed to assess attitude changes toward information technology. Results indicated gender differences between the participating classes, and differences before and after the project. Although the project did not uniformly impact the attitude of female high school students, it impacted teachers who are adjusting their teaching methods, an outcome that has a long-term positive influence.

Emotional Intelligence And Cognitive Moral Development In Undergraduate Business Students, Elizabeth Pluskwik
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
This study examines relationships between emotional intelligence (EI) and cognitive moral development (CMD) in undergraduate business students. The ability model of emotional intelligence was used in this study, which evaluated possible relationships between EI and CMD in a sample of 82 undergraduate business students. The sample population was approximately 700 students in a private university in the Midwest United States. A weak, positive relationship was found between overall emotional intelligence and moral development, but the strength of this relationship failed to reach statistical significance. However, one branch of EI, Understanding Emotions, did have a positive correlation with moral development at …

Transnational Students' Perspectives On Schooling In The United States And Mexico: The Salience Of School Experience And Country Of Birth, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga, Juan Sánchez García
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Students in Mexican schools with previous experience in US schools are transnational students. To the extent their Mexican schooling does not recognize or build on their US life and school experience and their American school experience did not anticipate their later relocation to Mexico, these students are incompletely attended to by school. Yet these students, like all students, are agentive and have some control over how they make sense of their schooling.
As schooling becomes an increasingly common institutional presence across the world and as decided majorities of children now attend at least some version of primary school, it is …
No Child Left Behind: Disincentives To Focus Instruction On Students Above The Passing Threshold, Christina Payne Tsoupros
No Child Left Behind: Disincentives To Focus Instruction On Students Above The Passing Threshold, Christina Payne Tsoupros
Journal Articles
As a result of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), schools place a great emphasis on standardized testing. Students at risk of failure are identified for additional instruction. This is aligned with the adequacy (versus equity) framework of school finance litigation, which seeks to bring the bottom up to a certain minimum level. Under the adequacy ideology, the focus is on achieving a minimum threshold of proficiency. In low performing schools where a high percentage of students are at risk of failing the test, a focus on the minimum creates disincentives to work with students performing at or above …

Student Affairs Connection: Promoting The Library Through Co-Curricular Activities, Kathryn M. Crowe
Collaborative Librarianship
Librarians at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) University Libraries developed the “Student Affairs Connection” program in order to market the Libraries to students in co-curricular settings and to collaborate more closely with the Student Affairs Division. The program also provides the opportunity to seek student input on Libraries’ services and resources and to communicate directly with them in a variety of ways. The program has multiple facets: a liaison program where librarians are assigned to specific student organizations and services such as Student Government and Residence Life, a Student Libraries Advisory Council (SLAC) representing diverse groups of …

The Role Of Perceived Threat In Anglo-Australian Attitudes To International Students, Katarzyna Koska
The Role Of Perceived Threat In Anglo-Australian Attitudes To International Students, Katarzyna Koska
Theses : Honours
This study examined the relationship between intergroup threat and negative attitudes among Anglo-Australians (N = 11 0) toward international students. The Integrated Threat Theory (ITT) was reviewed and four types of threat were discussed that have been shown to be influential determinants of negative attitudes, namely: realistic threat, symbolic threat, intergroup anxiety and negative stereotypes. In addition, the importance of intergroup contact as a separate predictor of attitudes was investigated. Results provided partial support for the ITT, identifying only two threats as significant and unique predictors of attitudes toward international students. Consistent with the hypothesis, realistic threat was significantly and …

Regulating Student Speech: Suppression Versus Punishment, Emily Gold Waldman
Regulating Student Speech: Suppression Versus Punishment, Emily Gold Waldman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This article examines the Supreme Court’s student speech framework and argues that, in focusing exclusively on the types of student speech that can be restricted, the framework fails to build in any differentiation as to how such speech can be restricted. This is true even though there are two very distinct types of speech restrictions in schools: suppression of the speech itself; and after-the-fact punishment of the student speaker. As the student speech landscape itself gets more complex – given schools’ experimentation with new disciplinary regimes along with the tremendous rise in student cyber-speech – the blurring of that distinction …
