University professors use film as a medium to examine social issues, although little is known about the tangible effects that socially minded films have on viewers. This study examined how combining film studies with a philanthropy project was beneficial to students’ understanding of global social concerns. Survey data showed that with this teaching approach, students increased their awareness of local social needs and nonprofits and had a greater personal interest in community involvement and helping others.

Latino families of children with ASD face additional barriers within society compared to other families, including surrounding stigma within the culture, language barriers, lack of resources, and lack of education on how to access these resources. One of the focuses of occupational therapy is to provide education and advocacy to individuals and their families who face occupational barriers. This program was created to provide education to Latino families of children diagnosed with ASD through participation in weekly sessions that cover various topics related to ASD.

The purpose of this scholarly project was to identify and mitigate the barriers of medication adherence in an underserved population of Hispanic patients diagnosed with Type II diabetes through a nurse-driven telephone follow-up program. The program aims to assess and offer solutions available in the clinic to barriers of medication adherence. The project was implemented at the non-profit Christ Clinic located in Katy, TX. About 94% of the population are Spanish-speaking Hispanics and 200% below the federal poverty level. The patients do not have insurance due to their immigration status. Parents were asked to consider and report on their literacy practices at home. It is a sub-dialect of Chicano Spanish which has mainly existed in the Southwestern U.S for centuries. It relates to other varieties of U.S Spanish that have been influenced by macro-dialects other than Mexican Spanish. Reduced articulatory precision is common in speech, but for dialog its acoustic properties and pragmatic functions have been little studied. We here try to remedy this gap. This technical report contains content that was omitted from the journal article (Ward et. al, submitted). Specifically, we here report 1) lessons learned about annotating for perceived reduction, 2) the finding that, unlike in read speech, the correlates of reduction in dialog include high pitch, wide pitch range, and intensity, and 3) a baseline model for predicting reduction in dialog, using simple acoustic/prosodic features, that achieves correlations with human perceptions of 0.24 for …

Background: Members of the Hispanic population have a 50% or higher chance of developing diabetes and often do so at a younger age than other adults in the United States (CDC, 2022a). Diabetes complications also impact the Hispanic population harder, with higher rates of kidney failure caused by diabetes, along with diabetes-related vision loss and blindness (CDC, 2022a). Though vaccines decrease incidence of their associated diseases, vaccination rates among Hispanics are lower than their White non-Hispanic counterparts for almost all vaccines. In this study, we identify linguistic and cultural barriers to vaccination of Hispanic Immigrants (HI). An electronic survey was administered among HI parents living in the United States. Using structural equation modeling, we found that a lower language barrier increases the trust in patient-physician relationship (+0.487) and increases HPV knowledge (+0.450). Mistrust because the health care was not in Spanish led to negative vaccine attitudes (-0.104), while trust due to a lower language barrier led to positive …

The rapid growth of Hispanic communities in the western United States has prompted multiple recent studies on states whose Hispanic history is relatively recent when compared with the states that border Mexico. One state that has received relatively little attention in this area is Utah, whose Hispanic population has more than quintupled in the past three decades.
