Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Turn-Taking Practices In English And Spanish Conversations, Claudia B. Martínez
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
Conversation analysis is primarily concerned with the tacit rules of turn-taking in standard systems of conversation—that is, with how people maneuver through spoken conversations to make themselves heard, while still allowing for dialogue to take place. Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson had largely influenced the groundwork for this field in the late 1970s by setting forth certain proprieties of speech that deem overlaps, or interruptions, generally untoward and counterproductive. My goal here is to rethink this theory, however, to illuminate certain culturally specific instances of overlapping that do indeed lend themselves to the flow of the conversation. This experiential narrative seeks to acknowledge the voices of Spanish speaker with a limited knowledge in English by documenting their past experiences with healthcare services and its accessibility to them in certain regions of the United States. Being introduced to each individual interviewed, readers will become acquainted with the subjects, and be able to hear their personal stories, challenges, and opinions regarding language barriers in healthcare. My findings will reveal whether healthcare services are equipped for Spanish speakers, or whether they leave them with their essential needs unmet, due to the reparable, yet not acted upon, setback of a language …

The purpose of this monograph is to establish that Ariel Ramírez Misa Por La Paz y La Justicia is a significant choral work of the twentieth century that expresses the idea of peace during a time of disorder. My study will focus mostly on an analysis of the work, but will also provide additional information on the life of the composer. This will afford future conductors a resource on the Mass. My hope is that with this in-depth study of the work, conductors and/or ensembles will be more willing to perform this Mass. The parallels between the historical period in …

If Signs Could Talk: Tales From Two Minority Landscapes In Contact With Spanish, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

In the Caribbean Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia, a minority creole language, known as Islander, have coexisted with Colombian Spanish for almost two centuries. However, since the declaration of San Andres island as a free-duty port in 1953, the commercial expansion of the Archipelago has brought about the imposition of Spanish in formal settings (Bartens, 2013), and consequently the preference of Spanish in written visual signs. In contrast, Valenciano (Valencia, Spain), another minority language in contact with Spanish as a national language, seems to enjoy more official recognition in terms of public display of written signs. The Importance Of Language In Cross-Cultural Interaction, Lacy Norton

Language and culture are connected. Because of this connection, people have a preferred language with which they have an emotional or cultural connection. In Latin American cultures, it is beneficial to speak to a person in their preferred language. Using a person’s preferred language as opposed to any other language will facilitate a deeper connection with that person, cross cultural barriers that may separate them, and be more effective when attempting to share the gospel.
