Mi Heroe, Carol Passant
Mi Heroe, Carol Passant
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit is designed for high school. It attempts to have students reflect on what they value in a hero and what they choose to imitate. Students learn vocabulary to describe physical traits and personality characteristics of a hero/heroine. The students will engage in conversations and reflective writing about heroes in the target language of Spanish. The assessments include an interpersonal piece and a presentational writing assessment. As much as possible, I incorporated references to authentic resources such as, videos, music, infographics, and articles in Spanish.

Broadcasting The Crisis: Spanish Television As Critique, Eva Velasco Pena
Broadcasting The Crisis: Spanish Television As Critique, Eva Velasco Pena
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Television is often thought of as monolithic and totalizing, controlling viewers and upholding the status quo. This project will propose different understandings of the mass-medium. In order to historically contextualize my study, I will begin with a brief discussion of the role of television in democratic Spain (from c.1978-present). The thesis will primarily consist of an analysis of two sides of contemporary Spanish TV: fiction and politics; and will explore the way that certain programs, alternately catalyze critical thought and actions or enable spectators to, following John Ellis, “work through” traumatic events. I furthermore propose that imaging a concept might …

Ideology, Access, And Status: Spanish-English Bilinguals In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Michael E. Rolland
Ideology, Access, And Status: Spanish-English Bilinguals In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Michael E. Rolland
Graduate Student Publications and Research
Spanish language teaching in US higher education is today generally divided between ‘foreign language’ courses for novice learners and ‘heritage language’ courses for Hispanic/Latinx students with some knowledge of the language. However, ‘heritage’ students are a linguistically diverse group, and are also often enrolled at institutions where heritage courses are not offered. Little research to date has studied ‘heritage’ speakers enrolled in ‘foreign’ language courses. For this study I conducted semi-structured interviews to explore the affective and ideological characteristics of bilingual students enrolled in elementary Spanish courses. As the literature suggests, I find that these students have a generally low …

La Cultura De Deseos Y Necesidades (7th-12th Grade), Haley Hansen
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit is designed for the middle of the school year in a Spanish 1 classroom. The unit focuses on reviewing previously learned vocabulary including school supplies and activities while adding the present tense verbs "tengo," "quiero," and "necesito." Students will be exposed to information about and images of classrooms around the world to show how wants and needs differ by culture. At the end of the unit, students will have two Performance-Based Assessments- an interpersonal conversation about what they want to do and need to do and an integrated writing assessment comparing wants and needs in their school to …

The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. Effect Of Proficiency Level On The Neural Responses Of Students Learning Spanish As A Second Language, Haley West
Effect Of Proficiency Level On The Neural Responses Of Students Learning Spanish As A Second Language, Haley West
Celebration of Learning
This study examines the effect of Second Language proficiency on the hemispheres of the brain. This will tell us if and how the brain processes a second language differently. Comparisons explore English versus Spanish listening tasks, and right versus left hemisphere activation in students with varying proficiencies in the Spanish program at Augustana. This is one of the first experiments to use the new in-house electroencephalography (EEG) technology in the Augustana neuroscience program.
