Reciprocity And Reflection In Community-Based Study Abroad Courses In Rural Costa Rica, Genny D. Ballard, Sarah Murray
Reciprocity And Reflection In Community-Based Study Abroad Courses In Rural Costa Rica, Genny D. Ballard, Sarah Murray
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
This manuscript will examine two high-impact practices in academia, community-based learning, and study abroad. The authors discuss the benefits of both practices and how pairing the two can benefit not only future educators but future leaders. This model provides students with the opportunity to become more globally competent through their time in another culture. Throughout this immersion, college students taught English in the context of reading, mathematics, science, or social studies. Critical and analytical reflection was a significant aspect of their college course. At the conclusion of their community-based study abroad course, students were asked to synthesize a final report …

Student Expectations And Motivation In Spanish For Heritage Speakers Programs, Sergio A. Guzman
Student Expectations And Motivation In Spanish For Heritage Speakers Programs, Sergio A. Guzman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The changing demographics in the United States and the growing need for multilingual individuals originated by globalization, among other reasons, have contributed to the emergence of a new field within the area of Applied Linguistics: The Teaching and Learning of Heritage Languages. Due to historical and geographic causes, Spanish for Heritage Speakers (SHS) is currently the largest and most established of these programs. However, the curricula, like those of most college courses, has been developed from professors’ perspectives, largely ignoring what students want to learn and/or their motives for enrolling in these classes. The lack of student input is especially …

Friends Outside New Program Feasibility, Monica Miramontes-Valadez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Friends Outside is a nonprofit organization that primarily works with the incarcerated, newly released individuals, and probationers. Currently, female perpetrators of domestic violence who cannot afford the 52-week treatment program are being referred to Friends Outside to comply with probation terms, but they are not receiving any credit toward certification for completion, not is it being recognized by the California Courts. Presently, there is one program available in the entire Santa Cruz County, New View, which is only available in English and has limited time availability and prohibitive costs. The project focus was to examine whether Friends Outside should fill …

Cuasi Nomás Inglés: Prosody At The Crossroads Of Spanish And English In 20th Century New Mexico, Jackelyn Van Buren
Cuasi Nomás Inglés: Prosody At The Crossroads Of Spanish And English In 20th Century New Mexico, Jackelyn Van Buren
Linguistics ETDs
This dissertation investigates prosodic change in the long-term language contact setting of Traditional New Mexican Spanish (NMS). NMS prosody is perceptually distinct from other contemporary varieties of Spanish (Hills 1906, Bowen 1952, Lipski 2011), yet the features which make it unique have not been acoustically examined. This study hypothesizes that bilingualism with English has affected NMS prosody and analyzes three features which are known to differ between Spanish and English and therefore provide a quantitative point of comparison: pitch peak alignment, pitch variability, and rhythmic timing. These variables have been demonstrated to be susceptible to transfer in contact situations, including …
