Heuristic Interventions In The Study Of Intellectual Property, Jessica Silbey
Heuristic Interventions In The Study Of Intellectual Property, Jessica Silbey
Faculty Scholarship
In this Essay, I review and elaborate on Dan's Burk's On the Sociology of Patenting with three "heuristic interventions" for the study of intellectual property law. These interventions derive from sociology and anthropology, and to some extent also from critical literary theory. Unoriginal in the social sciences, these heuristic interventions remain largely original to the study of law within law schools and traditional legal scholarship (as opposed to the study of law from within the social sciences and humanities). Burk joins a small but growing group of legal scholars, reaching beyond legal doctrinal analysis and the economic analysis of law …
Animal Pain And The Social Role Of Science, Leslie Irvine
Animal Pain And The Social Role Of Science, Leslie Irvine
Animal Sentience
Assuming that all animals are sentient would mean ending their use in most scientific research. This does not necessarily imply an unscientific or anti-scientific stance. Examining the social role of science reveals its considerable investment in preserving the status quo, including the continued use of animal subjects. From this perspective, the use of animal subjects is a custom that science could move beyond, rather than a methodological requirement that it must defend.
Congressional Hearings: Immigration Frames In Expert Testimonies, Joshua Woods, C. Damien Arthur Phd
Congressional Hearings: Immigration Frames In Expert Testimonies, Joshua Woods, C. Damien Arthur Phd
Political Science Faculty Research
This book offers a broad interdisciplinary approach to the changes in the U.S. immigration debate before and after 9/11. A nation’s reaction to foreigners has as much to do with sociology as it does with political science, economics and psychology. Without drawing on this knowledge, our understanding of the immigration debate remains mundane, partial, and imperfect. Therefore, our story accounts for multiple factors, including culture and politics, power, organizations, social psychological processes, and political change. Examining this relationship in the contemporary context requires a lengthy voyage across academic disciplines, a synthesis of seemingly contradictory assumptions, and a grasp of research …
It’S Just Common Sense! Why Do Negative Perceptions Of Sociology Teaching In Medical Education Persist And Is There Any Change In Sight?, L Brooks, T Collett, S Forrest
It’S Just Common Sense! Why Do Negative Perceptions Of Sociology Teaching In Medical Education Persist And Is There Any Change In Sight?, L Brooks, T Collett, S Forrest
Peninsula Medical School
Based on a review of the literature pertaining to sociology teaching in medical education, this paper asks why does the problem of relevance with regards to sociology teaching in medical education still persist? And is there any change in sight? The literature suggests that epistemological understandings of medicine as represented by the biomedical model are deeply entrenched with far reaching consequences for sociology teaching. Notions of the social components of medicine as ‘irrelevant’ or ‘common sense’ have over time been reinforced by students’ expectations of medicine on entering medical education; by the attitudes of clinical and biomedical staff members who …

The History Of Sociology Teaching In United Kingdom (Uk) Undergraduate Medical Education: An Introduction And Rallying Call!, T Collett, L Brooks, S Forrest
Peninsula Medical School
Based on a review of the literature, this article provides an introduction to the history of sociology teaching in UK undergraduate medical education. Aimed at an international community and at individuals either new to the field or with a general interest, our objectives are to situate sociology teaching in UK medical education within its broader historical and political setting, to highlight the work of past social science teachers, to draw attention to the modern day context and to ask: ‘what now’? We are particularly interested in the changing role of the sociologist in teaching medical sociology. The behavioral and social …
Rivalry In Toyer: The Impact Of The Male Gaze And The Final Girl On Theatrical Conflict, Sento Ashby
Rivalry In Toyer: The Impact Of The Male Gaze And The Final Girl On Theatrical Conflict, Sento Ashby
Liberal Arts Capstones
Although much progress has been made in recent years, traditional gender roles still permeate society. This project investigated gender constructs in relation to choreographed violence and found that females are often victims unless they adopt masculine survival styles, while males are usually aggressors – particularly towards females. Analysis of the characters in the play Toyer by Gardner McKay supported this conclusion.
Doing A Bid: The Construction Of Time As Punishment, Keesha M. Middlemass, Calvinjohn Smiley
Doing A Bid: The Construction Of Time As Punishment, Keesha M. Middlemass, Calvinjohn Smiley
Political Science Faculty Research
Juxtaposing the sociology of time with the sociological study of punishment, we interviewed 34 former inmates to explore their memories of how they constructed time while “doing a bid.” Prison sentences convey macro-political and social messages, but time is experienced by individuals. Our qualitative data explore important theoretical connections between the sociology of time as a lived experience and the temporality of prison where time is punishment. The interview data explores the social construction of time, and our findings demonstrate participants’ use of the language of time in three distinct ways: (a) routine time, (b) marked time, and (c) lost …
The Temple Character Of Early Christianity, Matthew Higdon
The Temple Character Of Early Christianity, Matthew Higdon
Graduate Theses
I will argue that early Christianity more or less comprehensively envisioned itself, across varying traditions, to be a human-temple community, or a series of such communities; and that this word picture, this symbol, to a certain extent ordered their social life and aspirations. I propose three interlocking aspects to this priestly sociology. First, there is the element of unity. From the beginning, the temple model promoted unity, and it became particularly important later among very disparate groups of people within the church Second, the cultic motif generated a fresh kind of priestly ethics appropriate to the self-understanding of the movement. …
‘How Yoga Are You?’: Exploring The Contemporary Practice Of Yoga In The United States, Olivia Mclaughlin
‘How Yoga Are You?’: Exploring The Contemporary Practice Of Yoga In The United States, Olivia Mclaughlin
Masters Theses
In 2015, to the United States, 21 million Americans claimed to be regular practitioners of yoga. Yoga has long been studied by psychologists, therapists, and medical scientists for its ability to affect positive change in people’s lives, particularly in regards to mental and emotional health and well-being. Within the field of sociology, yoga has gained an increasing amount of attention for its ability to help treat chronic eating disorders among women, becoming extremely popular within the subfields of sociology of the body and gender. Additionally, the cultural impact of the transmission of yoga has fascinated social scientists interested in studying …
The History Problem: The Politics Of War Commemoration In East Asia, Hiro Saito
The History Problem: The Politics Of War Commemoration In East Asia, Hiro Saito
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Seventy years have passed since the end of the Asia-Pacific War, yet Japan remains embroiled in controversy with its neighbors over the war’s commemoration. Among the many points of contention between Japan, China, and South Korea are interpretations of the Tokyo War Crimes Trial, apologies and compensation for foreign victims of Japanese aggression, prime ministerial visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, and the war’s portrayal in textbooks. Collectively, these controversies have come to be called the “history problem.” But why has the problem become so intractable? Can it ever be resolved, and if so, how? To answer these questions, the author …

Alike And Different: My Religion, Your Religion, Liz Kazandzhy
Children's Book and Media Review
David’s friend Zach has invited him to his Jewish bar mitzvah, but David has never been to a Jewish synagogue before. He and his father research more about the Jewish faith and then go to support Zach, learning all sorts of interesting things about the Jewish religion. On Sunday, David and his dad go to their Lutheran church, though he and his mom often go to the Catholic church together. Later he volunteers at a soup kitchen and sees his friend from school helping too, though she doesn’t belong to any church. After learning more about the Muslim and Buddhists …

She then has lunch with Olivia and her dad and learns more about divorce and stepfamilies, and she stops by Jake and his grandparents who take care of him. Public Awareness Of The Scientific Consensus On Climate, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Public Awareness Of The Scientific Consensus On Climate, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Sociology
Questions about climate change elicit some of the widest political divisions of any items on recent U.S. surveys. Severe polarization affects even basic questions about the reality of anthropogenic climate change (ACC), or whether most scientists agree that humans are changing the Earth’s climate. Statements about scientific consensus have been contentious among social scientists, with some arguing for consensus awareness as a “gateway cognition” that leads to greater public acceptance of ACC, but others characterizing consensus messaging (deliberate communication about the level of scientific agreement) as a counterproductive tactic that exacerbates polarization. A series of statewide surveys, with nationwide benchmarks, …

Children's Book and Media Review
Romelie meets a new student in class, a girl named Camila who speaks Spanish. Romelie also speaks another language, American Sign Language, at home with her deaf brother. She likes learning about different languages, so she and her mom play a game where they try to look for and listen to as many different languages as they can find. They notice French on a shampoo label, street names from the American Indian languages, and hear even more languages at the park and in the market. After a fun and multilingual weekend, Romelie returns to school and excitedly shares with her …

They learn about Italian spaghetti and marinara; yi mein that’s eaten with chopsticks; special breads from Norway, India, and Jewish cultures; and food that comes from fishing and hunting. Before Manuel’s presentation, he and his grandmother present a special treat, Mexican salsa, and then he brings it to share with the whole class.

Dogs & Society: Anglo-American Sociological Perspectives (1865-1934), Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan
Zea E-Books Collection
HUMANS AND DOGS have a long, wonderful and sometimes problematic association. At a personal level, dogs have been integral to our lives, and our parents’ lives, for as long as the two of us can remember. As sociologists, we also recognize that dogs are important at the macro level. Here, we introduce a selection of early sociological arguments about dogs and their social relationships with humankind. Our interest in developing this book began when we encountered the delightful essays on dogs by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Annie Marion MacLean — two insightful Anglo-American sociologists who present opposing sympathies regarding the …

Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to analyze spatiotemporal variations in NYPD policing patterns in an attempt to identify the causal mechanism(s) driving the observed racial/ethnic disparities; specifically, it addresses questions of how changing neighborhood demographics influence the decision-making of NYPD officers/precincts as it relates to their controversial Stop-and-Frisk policy.
Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene
Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene
Sociology ETDs
This study (N=168) builds on a long lineage of scholarly work connecting social networks to mental health by exploring relationships between refugee social network compositions—network size, proportion of same sex ties, proportion of same community ties, and role heterogeneity—and self-reported symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. This study finds that newly resettled refugee social networks are small and social isolation is common; approximately 30% of participants reported having no local social network ties. For refugees with local social network ties, the composition of social networks does appear to matter. Having more same sex ties was negatively associated with higher mental …

Do Online Gaming Experiences Affect Civic Engagement? The Relationship Between Gaming Experiences, Parental Involvement, And Real World Civic Engagement, James Letterhos
Sociology ETDs
The majority of literature that concerns itself with the effects of video games and youth focus on negative potential outcomes, like the potential for increased antisocial behavior. Whats more, that literature also focuses on the content of the games themselves and not necessarily on the actions of other players within games. This study considers what happens when players witness antisocial behavior acted out by other players as well as intervention against that behavior and the role that parental involvement plays in mediating the direct effects of gaming and youth civic engagement. Weighing three differing perspectives on the relationship between video …
