Looking Beyond A Rare Presentation Of Betel Nut Use In A North American Patient- An Opportunity For Lessons And Intervention In Global Health And Gender Equity, Muhammad O. Zaman, Thomas M. Park, Vikas Patel, Riley G. Jones Sep 2020

Looking Beyond A Rare Presentation Of Betel Nut Use In A North American Patient- An Opportunity For Lessons And Intervention In Global Health And Gender Equity, Muhammad O. Zaman, Thomas M. Park, Vikas Patel, Riley G. Jones

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

Betel nut is estimated to be the fourth most common psychoactive substance used globally behind caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine with 600 million global users. Betel nut use has a strong association with oral cancer and many other systemic effects including oral submucosal fibrosis. Although North American use is rare, its enduring effects may surface long after use posing a diagnostic challenge to practitioners caring for an increasingly global diaspora. Herein, we present a patient with severe trismus due to advanced oral submucosal fibrosis who was unexpectedly found to be importing and using Betel nut for over thirty years after immigrating. …

“Is My Package Big Enough?”: Emerging Asian-American Men And Masculinity, Corinne Tam Aug 2020

“Is My Package Big Enough?”: Emerging Asian-American Men And Masculinity, Corinne Tam

SURF Posters and Papers

As many young adults now encounter “emerging adulthood,” a critical period of identity formation (Arnett 2000), the models of masculinity that men use to guide their transition into manhood during this life stage have yet to be investigated. Connell (2000) illustrates a “flexible, calculative, egocentric” masculinity as hegemonic today; however, as intersectional theory indicates, the means to achieving dominant cultural models are complicated by the relation between our diversity of identities and accessibility to resources (Crenshaw 1990). Stereotypes of Asian men being especially feminine reveal the unique position they hold to hegemonic masculinity. This research project asks, How do emerging …

The Charismatic Dog And Public Space: Are Dog Parks A Third Place?, Lori Dynette Lee Aug 2020

The Charismatic Dog And Public Space: Are Dog Parks A Third Place?, Lori Dynette Lee

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Exiting research supports dog parks as a third place based on the ability of dog-supportive public space to bring people together informally outside home and work (Graham and Glover, 2014), yet offers little clarity in terms of strength of interaction. Ray Oldenburg (1989), the originator of the notion of third place, stresses the importance of certain contexts in supporting repeat encounters, which he explains are of crucial importance to effective third places, while lamenting their absence in suburban America. A careful review of his work in this dissertation raises the question, is a dog park within a suburban Dallas context …

Examining The Effects Of Disability Services On Student Success In Higher Education, Rebecca Smith Aug 2020

Examining The Effects Of Disability Services On Student Success In Higher Education, Rebecca Smith

Master's Theses

Disabled students in higher education are provided resources through reasonable accommodation, or modification of university offerings. This affords the disabled student equal opportunity to benefit from those programs, services, and facilities despite the limitations imposed by their disability. This practice is historically informed by the medical model of disability, and legal reforms such as the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act in 1973. Most research in this area has found that reasonable accommodation is effective for “leveling the playing field” for disabled college students. Yet, some researchers argue that Universal Design, the composition of an environment …

The Power Of Together: Applying Group Dynamics To Organizational Change Initiatives, Megan Bissell Aug 2020

The Power Of Together: Applying Group Dynamics To Organizational Change Initiatives, Megan Bissell

Master's Theses

Work and occupations are among the oldest and most salient concepts studied in sociology. Sociology as a field has largely focused on organizations from a macro perspective; primarily looking at organizational systems and institutionalized systems of oppression. Conversely, in conjunction with other disciplines such as psychology, sociology has maintained a presence in the more micro space, focusing on individualized interaction and behaviors. However, there is a distinct lack of meso-level research about the impact of group dynamics and social interaction in the for-profit workplace. Since 2010, there have only been 89 articles published about groups and their interactions in the …

The Social Register: Staying Relevant In The Post-Industrial Age, David Broad Jul 2020

The Social Register: Staying Relevant In The Post-Industrial Age, David Broad

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The Social Register has been since 1888 a defining feature of the American social upper class which has been argued by Baltzell, Domhoff and others as a governing class. From its beginnings in the flowering of the corporate oligarchy in the industrial age, the Social Register has changed relatively little in character or content. Recent journalistic and social scientific examinations of Social Registry have questioned its continuing relevance to the thesis that the social upper class is a governing class. This paper examines some of the foundational work of Domhoff and others and extends that examination to recent developments in …

Young People In Conflict With The Law And The Interaction With Practitioners: Initial Findings Related To Health Care Outcomes In The Scottish Context, Camila Biazus Dalcin, Fernando Fernandes, Andrea Rodriguez, Ana Karina Bezerra Pinheiro Jul 2020

Young People In Conflict With The Law And The Interaction With Practitioners: Initial Findings Related To Health Care Outcomes In The Scottish Context, Camila Biazus Dalcin, Fernando Fernandes, Andrea Rodriguez, Ana Karina Bezerra Pinheiro

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Young people (YP) in conflict with the law have the worst health outcomes than the general population. Studies show that YP that were incarcerated will have worse physical and mental health outcomes (Barnert et al., 2017). One aspect is still to be considered in more depth, which regards the place of stigma (Hatzenbuehler, Phelan, Link, 2013) and symbolic violence (Bourdieu, 1989) as a factor that can impact on health outcomes for YP in conflict with the law.

Altering Age And Gender Stereotypes By Creating The Halo And Horns Effects With Facial Expressions, Mary Katherine Radeke, Anthony John Stahelski Jul 2020

Altering Age And Gender Stereotypes By Creating The Halo And Horns Effects With Facial Expressions, Mary Katherine Radeke, Anthony John Stahelski

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This study examined the impact of a variable, facial expression, on the social perception and personality trait stereotypic inferences made to age and gender. Twelve facial photographs of young and old female and male models posing with either smiling, scowling, or neutral facial expressions were presented to participants who judged various social perceptions and personality traits. Results indicated that facial expression is strongly associated with two very different inference groupings. Smiling induced positive inferences, creating a Halo Effect, scowling induced negative inferences, creating a Horns Effect. Smiling influenced the age and gender inferences in a positive direction, and scowling did …

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor Jul 2020

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

As teachers, we often deny students the freedom to choose topics of inquiry and methods of communication. We have developed an open research project that challenges students to identify a social problem, gather research, and apply what they have learned by targeting an audience and developing a strategy for effective communication. This assignment centers a “problem-posing” focus that tasks students with confronting relevant issues in their lives and communities. It emphasizes public sociology by shifting the audience for their projects from instructors to classmates, families, communities, and beyond. Students have communicated their work through a variety of mediums, including children’s …

Examining The Association Between Interviewer And Respondent Speaking Pace In Telephone Interviews, Angelica Nicole Phillips Jun 2020

Examining The Association Between Interviewer And Respondent Speaking Pace In Telephone Interviews, Angelica Nicole Phillips

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Telephone interviewers are typically trained to speak at a pace of two words-per-second to enhance respondent cognitive processing. Although interviewer speaking pace varies across different question characteristics such as question length and complexity, the pace at which respondents answer questions in a telephone survey and whether pace varies by question characteristics has received scant attention. Furthermore, although there is a longstanding hypothesis that the speed at which interviewers ask questions influences the speed of respondent replies and that this in turn influences the quality of answers provided by respondents, few empirical studies directly examine the relationship between interviewer speaking pace …

Speaking Volumes: The Failure Of American Courts To Address The Underlying Themes Of Silence And Patriarchy Within The Civil Order Of Protection Process In Davenport, Iowa, Catherine Priebe

Sociology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Domestic abuse is a pervasive issue within the United States. Approximately three women will be murdered by an intimate partner every day and around half of all women will experience psychological abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime. As such, it is important to have legal avenues that survivors can pursue in order to ensure safety for themselves and their children. There are many obstacles to obtaining a civil order of protection despite it being the most common legal option survivors choose to pursue. Survivors must take on the burden of proof and hire their own attorney if they …

The Subaltern Magazine, Rebecca Fox, Riese Nichols Jun 2020

The Subaltern Magazine, Rebecca Fox, Riese Nichols

Social Sciences

The Subaltern intends to reach Cal Poly students who do not feel as if their voices are heard and allow them the platform to share their stories. Our focus is on unheard stories from our campus - whether this involves race, class, gender identity, mental health, ethnicity, culture, or any unique part of one’s identity or experience. We hope that these stories will begin to shed light on what we usually consider “taboo” topics and allow students to feel as if they aren’t alone.

Being a very homogeneous campus, it is important for us to realize that privileged voices are …

“Change Is The Essential Process Of All Existence:” Transformation Through Civic Learning And Democratic Engagement’S Theory Of Emergent Change, Molly B. Kerby May 2020

“Change Is The Essential Process Of All Existence:” Transformation Through Civic Learning And Democratic Engagement’S Theory Of Emergent Change, Molly B. Kerby

eJournal of Public Affairs

The higher education system in the United States is currently in flux. The cost of attending college is experiencing unprecedented increases, while federal and state support and resources are shrinking. In addition, public demands are shifting the culture of critical analysis common in liberal arts institutions to a focus on workforce development and job readiness. We have entered a new era and environment in which college administrators are confronted with an array of challenges that have the potential to threaten traditional, holistic education as well as civic and democratic engagement curriculum. This paper identifies the origins of social change theories …

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin May 2020

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Ask any Cape Town Muslim “what is Islam?”, and the first words that will come out of their mouths will be, “Islam is a way of life”. Among Muslim sexual minorities, the answer is resoundingly the same. Stating that Islam is a way of life indicates there are prescribed rules and codes of conduct that one must follow in order to be a Muslim. As such, the experience of these prescriptions and expectations are culture specific and context-dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which Muslim sexual minorities living in Cape Town, South Africa experience …

The Prevalence Of Rape Myths On A Mid-Sized, Public College Campus, Meghan Lewis May 2020

The Prevalence Of Rape Myths On A Mid-Sized, Public College Campus, Meghan Lewis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This paper aims to examine implicit beliefs regarding rape myths, and the effects of rape myths, on a mid-sized, public college campus. The current study employs an anonymous survey that contains questions regarding victim blaming, rape denial, rape myth-misinformation, as well as the effects of rape culture and rape myths. Results from the collected data support previous literature which has noted a relationship between gender and rape myth endorsement (Rollero and Tartaglia 2018; Bernard, Loughnan, Marchal, Godart, and Klein 2015), as well as a relationship between gender and feelings of safety on campuses (Fairchild and Rudman 2008). More specifically, the …

"We Missed Our Youth": The Identity Formation Of Child Migrants, Refugees, And Jewish Children In France From 1940 To 1942, Michaela Maria Gouge Watson

Honors Theses

From 1940 – 1942, hundreds of Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Russia, and France were hidden from Nazi and Vichy French authorities in children’s homes in France. These homes were administered by the Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants, a Jewish aid organization that assisted children in need during World War II. This study employs a quantitative content analysis of the testimonies of twenty Holocaust survivors who were hidden children in France between 1940 and 1942 to investigate to what extent the experience of outsider status and trauma affected these children’s personal and religious identity formation. The analysis finds that the …
